DICE SCHOLARSHIPS APPEAL The Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology DICE D
I chose DICE for my postgraduate training because I am someone who wants to achieve things on the ground. DICE s approach is unique: it collects data across fields and shares the findings with local people so things can get done on the ground. You can t do conservation work without getting into local communities and working with people... Being a student at DICE has [enabled me] to bring about more changes. Inogwabini Bila-Isia, DICE MSc Winner of the UNESCO Young Scientist Award 2006 and the National Geographic/Buffet Award for Leadership in African Conservation 2007
GROUND- BREAKING Biological diversity is facing an unprecedented crisis, with species being lost faster that at any time in the Earth s history. Since it was established in 1989, DICE has faced this crisis with a simple but groundbreaking approach: emphasising change on the ground through local involvement. This approach is cost effective, sustainable, and has been proven to work. DICE has trained 500 postgraduates from over 80 countries. Most of them have returned home to run conservation projects on the ground or have moved into influential conservation leadership roles across the world. Several have won international awards for their outstanding contributions to reversing the loss of biodiversity in their home countries. Beyond specialising in training postgraduates from biodiversity rich countries, DICE has also established a distinctive position in the UK and the world for having overcome conventional disciplinary and departmental boundaries in conservation. DICE focuses on both natural and social sciences, to ensure that future conservationists can better address the threats posed by people to biodiversity in ways that provide long-term incentives for conservation. Given that the DICE programme is relatively young, its full impact has yet to be felt. DICE s role in stimulating effective biodiversity conservation is more important and urgent than ever. A critical mass of conservationists is needed in key parts of the globe where biodiversity is at its most rich yet most threatened Africa, South America and Asia. DICE now seeks to create an even more extensive network of alumni and thereby reinforce its role as a global force for conservation. As we look back and celebrate 20 years of achievement in 2009, I would urge you to support the vital difference that DICE conservationists will make in the next 20 years. With your support, we seek to establish a scholarship fund that can help bring international conservationists of the future to train at DICE and benefit from its groundbreaking approach. Yours truly, Professor Julia Goodfellow 1
DICE gave me the sound practical knowledge to help rebuild my country. What I valued most was that DICE s programmes were up-to-date, practical, and taught by staff who had quality teaching skills based on personal involvement in conservation and tourism worldwide. Edwin Sabuhoro, DICE MSc 2008 IUCN Young Conservationist of the Year DICE has made me a scientist out of a simple wildlife ranger. I owe my conservation, conflict management and ecological knowledge to the training I had at DICE. It equipped me with the skills to deal with complex conservation issues locally, regionally and internationally. Dr Zelealem Tefera Ashenafi, DICE MSc, PhD
CONSERVATION AND HUMAN NEED Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth, the Earth s natural capital, on which we depend for all our basic needs. This biodiversity is being destroyed at an unprecedented rate by human actions. The overwhelming majority of the earth s remaining biodiversity resides in the developing world where it is threatened by rapidly growing demands for resources like agricultural land, fresh water, wood and wild meat. In this context, conservation will never succeed unless it takes human needs into account. The living conditions of those beneath the poverty line can be improved by the sustainable use of natural resources and it is certainly they who have the most to lose from unsustainable practices. As successive international assessments and UN conventions have made clear, biodiversity conservation is vital both to tackling climate change and to alleviating poverty. Conservation and meeting human needs are intimately interconnected. DICE: a pioneering institution DICE specialises in building the capacity of postgraduate conservationists, particularly from biodiversity-rich developing countries, so that they are fully equipped to respond to local challenges. Almost two thirds of DICE s postgraduate students come from these countries and they return home to make a real impact in terms of on-the-ground conservation. Professor Stuart Harrop, DICE DICE was founded in 1989 to educate a new generation of conservation professionals to respond to the emerging challenge of conserving the world s biological diversity. To achieve effective conservation, biodiversity-rich developing countries need trained nationals with a clear view of how to conserve biodiversity in ways that contribute to sustainable human development. At the time of DICE s foundation, academic training and research in conservation was in its infancy: the few existing postgraduate conservation programmes were largely confined to the natural sciences and were far removed from the realities of conservation on the ground. Most fieldwork was led by biologists from the developed world, and there were few opportunities for people from the developing world s biodiversity-rich nations to become qualified. DICE pioneered a new approach to conservation education by focussing its training on postgraduate conservationists from the developing world, and on training that embraced both natural and social sciences. This unique approach gives these global conservationists of the future the tools to implement projects in their home countries. They leave DICE prepared to help protect threatened species and ecosystems while seeking sustainable livelihoods for the frequently impoverished local communities. 3

WHAT S NEXT? DICE needs an increase in external investment if we are to keep pace with emerging conservation challenges. DICE is making a vital contribution to building national capacity in the developing world to conserve biodiversity. However, the threats to the world s species and ecosystems are immense and growing. Biodiversity-rich countries urgently need many more skilled conservationists who can reconcile the ever-increasing tensions between economic development and conservation. Our objective is to double DICE s impact on global conservation within five years. We will achieve this with a two-pronged approach: raise scholarships for areas with critical conservation crises but with few scholarship opportunities continue to build our global network of alumni in Africa, Latin America and Asia who together are becoming a global force for good in the world of conservation. What is needed? In order to achieve its objectives, DICE will need to double the number of international postgraduate students it teaches every year. Entrance statistics show that the majority of those applying to become DICE conservationists are unable to take up their places on our postgraduate programmes simply because they lack funding for fees and living costs. DICE continuously supports students in their efforts to win funding from international charities and government programmes, however the demand for these programmes far outstrips supply. A student from Rwanda starting our MSc programme in 2009 had applied five times in five years for a British Council Chevening Scholarship before gaining his award. Students from some countries do not have access to any scholarship programmes at all. This is not just a disappointment for the individual conservationists: it s a loss to the species and habitats they would be working to protect in their home countries. This year places were offered to students from a number of countries facing enormous threats to their biodiversity Haiti, Qatar, Syria, Mauritius, Sudan and China but none of the students could find funding. That s why DICE is launching an appeal to raise money for twenty new DICE scholarships as part of its 20th anniversary. There can be few better, more sustainable or cost-effective ways to invest in long-term conservation. 5
For example (all include Gift Aid): 6.50 a month, over the course of a year, could buy a camera trap for a DICE scholar to monitor vulnerable jaguar populations in Mexico. 35 a month could provide an entire year s course books and materials for a scholar otherwise unable to afford the opportunity of studying at DICE. 100 a month could pay for the field equipment for a DICE scholar undertaking rainforest conservation research. 20,000 would result in a gift of over 25,000, which would cover the full cost of a Masters degree at DICE, including all academic fees and full maintenance costs. Any portion of this cost would be welcome. 6
HOW YOU CAN HELP Your support is vital. By giving a gift to the DICE Scholarships Appeal you will be investing in the future of biodiversity. You can make a real difference to the future of species you care about: from toads to tigers. Administration and fundraising costs are paid by the University so every single penny you donate will directly support our scholarships. If you are a UK tax payer, Gift Aid could also increase your gift by a further 25p in every 1 at no extra cost to you! Regular gifts, no matter how small, help to ensure long-term financial stability and will support our target of doubling our impact on global conservation within five years. If you would like to make either a regular or single gift please complete the donation form enclosed in the back of this pack and send to: The DICE Scholarship Appeal, Communications and Development Office, The University of Kent, The Registry, Canterbury, CT2 7NZ Valuing your contribution Your support is invaluable in ensuring this vital work. We would like to recognise your involvement in DICE and would be happy to discuss opportunities with you. These could include: Visit DICE conservationists in the field, from Mozambique to Peru to Sumatra Come to DICE for lectures, workshops or short-courses Regular information on DICE s work, including research results, student achievements Acknowledgement in the University of Kent publications and at events. Leaving a legacy One of the most effective ways of supporting DICE Scholarships is to make a bequest in your will. If you are happy to tell us that the University has been included, we will be delighted to hear that you are supporting us. We can then keep you informed in a way that suits you. For more information about making a bequest to the University please contact the Development and Alumni Relations team at giving@kent.ac.uk or on Corporate sponsorship DICE welcomes corporate partnerships and sponsorships. If you are interested in exploring the benefits of working together with DICE, please contact Dr Susanna Paisley at S.Paisley@kent.ac.uk or on (01227) Naming scholarships Focussing scholarships on particular countries or species that you are concerned about Meet with staff and students to find out more about their work 7
