2 Welcome! We love our Youth Volunteers! You are a gift that God has entrusted us with, and we appreciate you! Without our volunteers, there would be limited Youth Ministry programs and limited youth ministry. Youth are being reached with God s love and the Gospel of Christ each week through our volunteers. Our Mission We are instruments of God who 1) help the young people of Bethesda become lifelong disciples of Jesus 2) help the young people of Bethesda reach those in their sphere of influence with THE CAUSE Our Vision C3: Christ, Community, Cause Knowing and Growing in Christ Belonging and Caring in Community Serving and Sharing in His Cause Bethesda Youth Ministries Organizational Chart tt Chad Shiffer Director of Youth Ministries and HSM Director Youth Committee Todd Waldie MSM Director ONE23 Leaders Sunday Bible Class Teachers Mary Graakamp (HS Lifegroup Coordinator) Sunday School Teachers The Bridge Leaders ONE23 (Sunday Night Youth Group) 7-8:30pm Sunday Bible Class 9am Lifegroup Leaders Wed. 3 Standards for Leadership The following standards apply to all Bethesda Youth Ministry Adult Leaders: 1. Adult leaders will have a commitment to the Youth Ministry area they are in. Responsibilities will include adequate preparation, faithful attendance, and promptness as designated in their appropriate job description. (1 Corinthians 10:31) 2. Adult leaders will have a commitment to our church, regularly attending worship services. (Hebrews 10:23-24) 3. Adult leaders will remember each person under his/her leadership in prayer. (Colossians 1:9) 4. Adult leaders will abstain, by the grace of God, from worldly habits or sinful practices which would in any way compromise or hinder his/her Christian testimony as found in the Word of God. (John 2:15-17; 1 Corinthians 8:9) 5. Adult leaders will teach through personal example, the Christian way of life. (Colossians 3) 6. Adult leaders will strive to maintain the unity of the Spirit, to have a positive attitude toward leadership and a loving concern for one another. (Ephesians 4:1-3; Philippians 4:8-9) 7. Adult leaders will consider those persons under his/her leadership as a real ministry, endeavoring to win and guide them to a personal, saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and lead them in their Christian growth. (2 Peter 3:9) Specific Guidelines: 1. Adult leaders will follow church policy when using the building, van or other church equipment by checking with the church office or appropriate staff person. 2. Adult leaders will never verbally abuse, physically discipline or attempt to harm a student unless a case of self protection or violence exists. 3. Adult leaders will never use racial, vulgar, profane or sexual language. 4. Adult leaders will avoid being alone with a student. If this is necessary, the door must remain open or an unobstructed window must be in place. If driving, a parent should know. Tell someone if you are alone with a student. 5. Confidentiality with a student will be subject to the best interest of the student and others that might be involved. Contact the youth ministry staff or a pastor if you have a questionable situation. 6. Adult leaders will consult with the Youth Ministry Staff if, for some reason, he/she is having difficulties fulfilling the job responsibilities. 7. Adult leaders, out of respect for his/her position of leadership and authority, will refrain from dating students and will commit to building appropriate relationships with students.

4 General Information Training There are many resources and materials available from the youth ministries staff for self- study and for equipping small group leaders, teachers and helpers. There will also be training events each year to assist us all as we seek to learn more about youth culture and how to best reach students. Prayer Partners Realizing the importance and privilege of prayer we encourage you to find a prayer partner to share requests with regarding your area of ministry. Cancellations - Activities Wisconsin weather can be nasty and at times result in the cancellation of activities. This can be an area of controversy. Some want activities cancelled at the slightest hint of driving difficulties. Others feel activities should go on for whoever can get to church. The staff watches the weather and the predictions closely and makes decisions by the end of the school day for meetings and events. Watch the website and listen to the radio for information. Please use your own judgment. If activities aren t cancelled, but you live far enough away from church that travel would jeopardize you or your family, then by all means stay home. Cancellations Personal You may need to miss an occasional Sunday or Wednesday. Please contact the youth ministries staff to let them know. You may be asked to contact potential subs. Information Dissemination Each month the Bethesda newsletter includes information regarding the high school and middle school ministries - you may include information in this letter as well. The youth staff work hard at keeping the website up to date with events and meetings, as well as utilizing Facebook, the Church (Wed), personal , monthly postcards, and texts. If you are missing out on valuable or helpful information regarding youth ministry, please contact the appropriate youth staff so we can keep you in the loop! Also don t be afraid to let youth staff know if some information is wrong or missing. Guidelines for Activities Off the Church Premises 1. Adult leaders need prior permission from the youth ministries staff before taking a student off the premises during regular class/meeting time. Written parental permission must also be obtained. 2. For a non- class time outing, the adult leader will provide to the youth ministries staff with the purpose, place, time and transportation means for the outing. All activities are subject to approval by the staff. A/V Sign Up If you are in need of equipment, please call the church office to reserve what you need ahead of time. There are limited numbers of machines and they must be reserved in advance. First Aid Kit First aid kits are located in the Resource Room, Kitchen, Youth Room and the church office (cabinet is marked). A defibulator is located across the hall from the library and can be used by any of the individuals listed as trained in its use. Noise Be aware of the location of other groups and be sensitive to their needs. We are all sharing space and need to be tolerant and respectful.

5 Behavior Guidelines Our main goal is to use our programs and activities as a tool to share Jesus with the youth. In order to do that effectively we have set up a few guidelines to help us provide a safe, warm, secure, encouraging and loving environment for all students. These guidelines promote respect for one another and for the beautiful facilities God has so graciously provided for us. Treat One Another With Respect No name- calling or put- downs Listen to and follow directions of adult volunteers Swearing, vulgar language is not permitted Hitting, pushing, kicking (physical violence) is not tolerated Respectful Building Behavior Tackle games, football, basketball, are reserved for outside or gym time Personal play equipment (video games, ipods, etc.) should be left at home No running in the building (except for adult- directed games) Food is consumed only in designated areas Sanctuary platform is reserved for designated worship participants An individual classroom may have its own policies which reflect the above, but in general your youth will be encouraged to treat others as Jesus would and to care for what He has given to us. Your help in going over these things with your youth will go a long way to avoiding difficulties. If a volunteer experiences routine difficulty with a student, the volunteer, Youth Ministry Staff and parents will work together to resolve the issue. Discipline An example of what you might do should a situation arise which calls for some corrective discipline is to give the student a warning with an explanation. If it persists then we suggest a removal from the situation (move away from the table or from another student). If the situation still does not improve then you may bring the student to the Youth Ministry Staff for some reflective time- out. The parent needs to be informed, in a positive way, of what transpired. If the problem persists we will then hold a meeting with the parent, teacher and Youth Ministry Staff to facilitate an acceptable plan of action for resolving the situation. When dealing with a particular troublesome issue please don t wait to talk to either the Youth Ministry Staff. We want to work with you to help things run as smoothly as possible.

6 Abuse: Physical & Sexual Detection, Reporting & Prevention The following information, unless otherwise noted, has been adapted from The Complete Handbook for Children s Ministry by Dr. Robert J. Choun & Dr. Michael S. Lawson, Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, Tennessee, 1993, pgs and Physical & Sexual Abuse: Statistics now tell us that more than two million cases of abuse are reported annually in the United States, and reports increase each year. It is possible that among the youngsters in your church are some who have been abused. Officials estimate some two- thirds of sexual abuse cases remain unreported. Our concern is: How can the church prevent abuse, and what steps should be taken when it is suspected? What Constitutes Abuse? Abuse is any action that causes injury to a child. When an injury is due to a lack of proper care or supervision that constitutes neglect. Abuse can be emotional or physical. Sexual abuse can range from non- touching to touching to violent advances. When a sexual touch involves an imbalance in age, size, or knowledge, it can be considered abuse. What To Do Avoid compromising situations Avoid being alone with a student If a classroom door does not have a window, leave the door open. Be sure parents always have access to their student. Use discipline techniques that do not involve corporal punishment. Example of appropriate touches would include using high fives, hand shakes, or pats on the back Work with parents. Parents have reason to be wary of any unfamiliar adult who wants to lavish attention on their child. Be sure you are willing help parents understand your motivation if you give a student a small gift, note, or special attention. Know The Signs Unexplained injuries. Be alert for injuries that are in various stages of healing, bruises covered by clothing, burns (especially in patterns), and welts that show the imprint of a strap or buckle. Victims of sexual abuse may show discomfort in walking or sitting, pain in urinating or defecating, persistent throat infections and gagging, or blood spotting in underwear. Behavior changes. Abused children may show excessive violence while at play. They may regress into younger behavior patterns. Sexually abused children may exhibit fear of certain individuals or places. They may also exhibit sexual knowledge, language, or actions inappropriate for their age level. Children who have been coerced into sexual acts may also possess gifts or money from an unexplained source. A family member who is an abuser usually wants to limit the victim s social contacts, so a child may be isolated somewhat from his or her friends. Signs of neglect. Neglected students may be inappropriately or inadequately dressed. Their nutrition and hygiene needs may have gone unattended. They may fall asleep in class from lack of rest. Neglected students may be the first to show up and last to go home. Church workers need to be alert for signs of hunger or for clues that a student has been left unsupervised by parents for a lengthy period. Unsupervised children often become the victims of accidents and/or attackers. When Abuse is Suspected Report. Everyone has heard horror stories of the system s failures to protect children even when suspicions have been reported, but unreported suspicions leave a child without hope. Reporting suspected abuse starts the investigation that can lead to a victim s protection, treatment, and recovery. Any suspicions of abuse should be reported to the Youth Ministry Staff. A parent s suspicions of church workers, on the other hand, will also be investigated. Support. An abused child needs professional care for physical and emotional healing. Concerned adults can be part of the treatment by reassuring the child that he or she was the victim. A circle of caring, sensitive adults can help restore a child s trust.
