1 New Carlisle Public Library Summer Reading 2015 Every Hero has a Story June 2 - July 31, Did you know that reading just six books in the summer can help combat learning loss? We are excited to promote learning through a full schedule of summer programs revolving around the themes "Every Hero has a Story" (children) and "Unmask" (teens). In June and July, children will have a chance to explore heroes in many different forms, from historical heroes to community heroes to comic book heroes! You'll find a complete calendar of events below. Please note that some programs require pre-registration; pre-register by stopping by the library or calling , ext Registration opens on May 20, 2015 and continues until programs are at capacity. Families are encouraged to pick up reading bingo cards beginning June 2. Teens can also fill out book review cards for an invite to our Unmasked Prize Auction AND the chance to win weekly prize drawings. TUESDAYS in June and July, 10:30 a.m. Shake, Rattle & Roll Young children and an actively participating caregiver, will enjoy stories, songs, dancing, shaky eggs, fingerplays, felt boards, musical instruments, and a simple art activity. Our June 2 session will be a preschool concert by performer Dorie Phillips! Ages: best for children ages 1-3, and a participating caregiver, but all are welcome. WEDNESDAYS in June and July, 11:00 a.m. Music and Movement Enjoy stories, songs, movement & dancing, scarves, felt boards, fingerplays, musical instruments, a simple art activity, and, sometimes, parachute play! Special Music & Movement on July 8: We will listen to fire stories and have a special guest, a real fireman! Ages: best for children ages 3-6, but all are welcome.

2 Tuesday, June 2, 10:30 a.m. Music Jamboree with Dorie Phillips Your children will love singing, moving, and dancing to lively guitar music. Rhythm instruments and puppets will be used as well in this fun program led by music therapist Dorie Phillips. Ages: toddler and preschool Friday, June 5, 1:30 p.m. The Turtle Lady The Turtle Lady presents live animals at this family event. If we are lucky, the toads will croak, the snake will shed, the turtles will kiss, the dragons will eat and the children will giggle. All ages. Attendees who touch reptiles are required to wash hands before leaving. Friday, June 12, 11:00 a.m. Mr. Molecule presents a SUPERHERO MATH SHOW Become a math Superhero! In his fast-paced, up-beat and totally amazing Superhero Math Show. Captain Numbers creatively blends comedy, improv, magic, and zany puppets to teach simple math concepts to all kids ages There s a just-right activity for every kid s learning superpower. Ages *Thursday, June 18, 3:00-5:00 p.m. Please pre-register Superhero Face Painting Artists from Wicked Faces will be face painting at the Library! Your child can choose a look from a special board of superhero designs. Two therapy dogs from Miami Valley Pet Therapy will be available from 3:00 4:00 p.m. for superheroes to practice their super reading skills. PLEASE PRE-REGISTER. Friday, June 19, 1:30 p.m. Crystal Clear Science presents BE A HERO OF SCIENCE Come learn about the science behind some of our favorite super heroes' super powers! We will explore magnetism (Iron Man, Magneto), elasticity (Elasti-Girl), light (Violet from Incredibles), and static electricity (Ivan Yanko - Iron Man). Ages 5 and up. *Thursday, June 25, 2:00 p.m. Please pre-register Dance Like a Superhero Professional dancer Amy Dobyns leads a fun dance party! Create dances, go on superhero adventures, and discover superpowers of your own! Come in costume, if you like! Ages 4-8, please pre-register.

3 Friday, June 26, 11:00 a.m. P.T. Reptiles presents LIVE SNAKES It's always a great show when P.T. Reptiles comes to town. Reptile Pete brings slinky, slithery animals right to you! This is your chance to see, touch, and even HOLD various reptiles! Be sure to bring your camera! All ages. *Tuesday, June 30, 10-11:30 a.m. Please pre-register Meet Debra Conner in character as.a HERO OF THE TITANIC. This program is part of the Ohio Chautauqua schedule. At the turn of the century, travel art became a true art form.travel posters, post cards, and luggage stickers promoted hotels, trains, and ocean liners like the Titanic.We'll look at examples of these for inspiration and then create our own travel art. Debra will also read aloud the children's story "Pig on the Titanic" by Gary Crew, which tells the story of Edith Russell and her musical pig. Ages 5 through middle school; please pre-register. Thursday, July 2 Drop-in from 11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Parent-Child Superhero I-Spy A fiendish league of villains has kidnapped all the superheroes. Parent-child teams can help save the day by finding them hidden throughout the library. Prizes! Friday, July 3, 1:30 p.m. Celebrate America s Birthday with patriotic WORM RACING! Find a worm in your backyard and bring your slinky speedster to the Library for indoor, air-conditioned worm racing on special tracks. Will your worm be a zero or a HERO? Don t forget to name your worm.and make sure to bring a cup of dirt for your worm to relax in, until his race starts. Cheer your worm to victory! All ages. Wednesday, July 8, 11:00 a.m. Firefighter Storytime! We will listen to stories about fire trucks and firefighters, and a real hero fireman will visit in his gear. Kids attending will receive a play fire hat. *Thursday, July 9, 1:30 p.m. Please pre-register Super Art with Artist Nancy Dyer Always a popular program! Retired Tecumseh art teacher Ms. Nancy Dyer will help kids in grades 1-5 create a special art project. Grades 1-5; PLEASE PRE-REGISTER.

4 Friday, July 10, 1:30 p.m. The BUGMAN presents LIVE BUGS The BUGMAN presents a live stage show filled with BUG videos, live BUGS and audience interaction. Afterwards, you ll be able to touch or hold some of the bugs at the BUG-observation tables, ask questions and talk BUGS. All ages. *Friday, July 17, 1:30 p.m. Please pre-register Superhero Training Academy Children are encouraged, but not required, to wear a cape OR come dressed as their favorite Superhero. Complete super hero skill tests and earn your official super hero certificate! PLEASE PRE-REGISTER. Thursday, July 23, 4:00-5:00 p.m. LEGO/Minecraft blowout! Play Minecraft on our XBOX or build with the Library's legos, while enjoying fizzy beverages and tasty snacks. New this year: Minecraft legos to build with. Friday, July 24, 1:30 p.m. Mark Wood presents SUPERHERO LOVES BOOKS It s a Bird, It s a Plane No it s Superhero Mark Wood (magician) who loves to read books and uses his super human powers to ward off the Evil Eraser, who tries to remove all the words from books around the world. The 40-minute show is great for ALL ages and includes comedy, magic and lots of audience participation.

5 Teen Summer Reading 2015 Unmask! June 2 - July 22, 2015 Grades 5-12 Teens can fill out book review cards for an invite to our Unmasked Prize Auction AND the chance to win weekly prize drawings. Thursday, June 4, 4:00 p.m. Teen Board Meeting Register for summer volunteer opportunities at the Library, help plan and organize library programs and services for teens.come prepared to talk about a book or a fandom you are passionate about! Help make your library and your community a better place. For teens in grades 5-12; ALL TEENS are welcome. Thursday, June 11, 2-4 p.m. *Mini Flashlight Workshop for TEENS (grades 5-12) PLEASE PRE-REGISTER; limited to 20 teens This workshop introduces electricity, circuits and soldering. teams will learn components of the flashlight and prototype the circuit with little bits. Students will learn all the components of a soldering iron and how to solder safely, finally construct their own Lip Balm flashlight. This Tinkr Tech workshop puts students into small groups and will take about two hours. Please pre-register; for teens in grades Thursday, July 16, 1:30 p.m. *Teen Craft: Mask & Unmask Show the world who you are (and create a great decoration for your room) by decorating a masquerade mask or porcelain face.
