3 Introduction to SEO China Our mission We aim to provide supe-rior edu-ca-tional and career pro-grams to young peo-ple from underserved com-mu-ni-ties to max-i-mize their oppor-tu-ni-ties for col-lege and career success Our program SEO has 50 years of history in the US, providing college students of color with paid, summer internships in competitive industries, including investment banking, consulting, private equity, accounting, law and corporate SEO China was founded in 2006 by SEO alumnus Mr. Thomas G. Tsao, and was officially registered as a charitable non-profit organization in HK on October 4, 2011 The SEO China program consists of 8 weeks of rigorous training, internship, mentorship, networking and charity activities, through which we broaden students horizon and maximize their opportunities for career success Our achievements REACH: Today we recruit from 55 top universities in China and abroad, receiving over 5,000 applications each year, and enjoy a high degree of exposure and recognition. This year, we also started an early pilot with China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation to help students from families living under poverty advance their careers ALUMNI NETWORK: To date, we have helped nearly 100 students further their careers in finance. SEO China alumni are now working in highly sought-after positions, including investment banking (Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, CICC etc.) management consulting (McKinsey, Bain, BCG), VC and PE firms (Temasek, CITIC PE, Gobi Partners etc.). 19 China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) China Founda8on for Poverty Allevia8on New Great Wall Program One of the 11 5A Foundations (highest ranking) in China Founded in 1989 to help people living in poverty 1 alleviate their situation and seek sustainable opportunities for advancement At year-end of 2012, CFPA cumulatively raised and invested USD 900 mn (RMB 5.7bn) in poverty alleviation funds and supplies, benefiting ~15mn poor people and victims of natural calamities Provided living subsidies USD 500 (RMB 3,000) per year to poor students. Cumulatively, aided 89,612 of the most needy students since the program started in 2002 (15,595 college students in 2012) To receive the grant, students first apply to their school; the school then recommends the neediest students to CFPA Domestic Beneficiaries Map, 2012 Sample application: a student with family income RMB 2k; approved by class, department and school Advocated self-reliance and self-improvement through the Self-improvement Society ( 自 强 社 ). As of 2012, there were 97 self-improvement societies with over 30,000 members nation-wide Present in more than 500 universities in 31 provinces / municipalities 1. Poverty defined by families living under USD 350 (RMB 2,300) per year; by this definition, there are ~90 mn people living under poverty in China
