Impact of Social Media Mobile Usage IT Professionals Open to New Opportunities Job Solicitations Waterfall Approach to Open IT Positions Deluge of Resumes Irrelevant Job Opportunities Mismatched and Falsified Resumes Lax on Verifying Claims Misaligned Search Efforts TEKsystems.com 3
Impact of Social Media Mobile Usage IT Professionals Open to New Opportunities A direct challenge to retaining IT talent is the fact that so many IT professionals are open to new job opportunities, even when they are not actively looking and are happily employed. While the majority of any workforce may say they re willing to listen to a new opportunity, the fact that IT skills are in such high demand means employers must constantly work to retain their best and brightest talent. Rate your level of agreement with the following statement. Even when they re not actively looking for a new job (happily employed), IT professionals are open to new opportunities. 92% IT Leaders 81% IT Professionals Even when I m not actively looking for a new job (happily employed), I am open to new opportunities. Percentage Who Believe IT Professionals are Open to New Job Opportunities TEKsystems.com 4
Impact of Social Media Mobile Usage Job Solicitations Employers working to retain top IT talent have their work cut out for them. The competition for IT talent is fierce. IT professionals receive, on average, 34 solicitations per week for new job opportunities, up from an average of 23 solicitations per week in (IT professionals) On average, how many solicitations for new job opportunities do you get through each of the following channels in a given week? 17 Solicitations Received Per Week Phone LinkedIn Other Text Facebook call message 1 Twitter 34 solicitations a week TEKsystems.com 5
Impact of Social Media Mobile Usage Waterfall Approach to Open IT Positions Organizations who fail to recognize the importance of a strong retention strategy may find their top performers leaving for better opportunities; IT professionals are definitely keeping their options open. Seventy-seven percent of IT professionals submit 10 or more resumes a week. (IT professionals) On average, how many resumes do you submit to open IT positions in a given week? 77% of IT professionals submit 10 or more resumes a week. 22% Resumes Submitted Per Week (on average) 21% 23% 34% Less than to to or more TEKsystems.com 6
Impact of Social Media Mobile Usage Deluge of Resumes Organizations with open IT positions will spend a significant portion of their time evaluating mountains of resumes; nearly three-quarters of IT leaders report they receive 10 or more resumes for each open IT position. The time spent reviewing these resumes may be all for naught. Fifty-six percent of IT leaders report more than half of the resumes they receive are unqualified for the position. (IT leaders) On average, how many resumes do you receive for each open IT position? (IT leaders) On average, what percent of resumes that you receive are not relevant or unqualified for the open position? 27% Resumes Received Per Open IT Position (on average) Less than or more 56% 29% 21% 23% 26% Percentage of Unqualified Candidates (on average) 18% 10% or less 11% to 49% 50% or more TEKsystems.com 7
Impact of Social Media Mobile Usage Irrelevant Job Opportunities (IT professionals) On average, what percentage of job opportunities that are sent to you are irrelevant (they do not match your skills, goals or interests)? While hiring managers spend time sifting through unqualified candidates, IT professionals navigate job opportunities sent to them that aren t in-line with what they re looking for. Sixty-two percent of IT professionals report more than half of the job opportunities they receive are irrelevant (i.e., the opportunities don t match their skills, goals or interests). Percentage of Irrelevant Job Opportunities 8% 10% or less 11% to 49% JOBS 62% 30% 50% or more TEKsystems.com 8
Impact of Social Media Mobile Usage Mismatched and Falsified Resumes Rate your level of agreement with the following statement. Many IT resumes include exaggerations and buzzwords that do not reflect a candidate s true experience. Embellished resumes may not be newsworthy but in IT the trend appears to be widespread. Seventy-six percent of IT leaders and 60 percent of IT professionals believe many IT resumes include exaggerations and buzzwords that do not reflect a candidate s true experience. The more important question may be why. In order to get noticed or picked up through an automated recruitment process, resumes must include certain verbiage, so that could lead IT professionals to fill their resumes with buzzwords. The volume of IT job titles could also be to blame. There is very little conformity in the current IT job market. For example, role and responsibilities for a network administrator at one company may have an entirely different set of requirements at another. IT Leaders 76% IT Professionals 60% 30% Agree Neutral Disagree 21% 3% 10% TEKsystems.com 9
Impact of Social Media Mobile Usage Lax on Verifying Claims (IT leaders) In your opinion, how often does your company follow through and check with/validate quality, senior-level references provided (minimum of two references)? Employers aren t doing themselves any favors while they navigate a plethora of IT resumes. Only thirtyone percent of IT leaders claim they always validate references, and about one out of 10 IT professionals believe this to be the case. Only by following consistent screening practices, validating a candidate s previous work history, and ensuring the resume provides an accurate depiction of the candidate s true skill set, will employers increase their odds of making the right match between position and candidate. 31% 28% 28% 10% 3% Always Frequently Sometimes Rarely Never (IT professionals) In your opinion, how often do your employers follow through and check with/validate quality, senior-level references provided (minimum of two references)? 11% 32% 38% 15% 4% Always Frequently Sometimes Rarely Never TEKsystems.com 10
Impact of Social Media Mobile Usage Misaligned Search Efforts IT leaders believe networking and recruiting firms are the most effective resources when searching for qualified IT candidates, while IT professionals believe online job boards are the most effective resource for helping them find a job that matches their skills, goals and interests. Networking and recruiting firms aren t far behind for IT professionals but the fact that 70 percent rate online job boards as excellent or very good, compared to only 43 percent of IT leaders indicates they rely on those resources much more heavily. (IT leaders) How would you rate the effectiveness of the following types of resources in terms of helping you find a qualified candidate that matches your open position? (IT professionals) How would you rate the effectiveness of the following types of resources in terms of helping you find a job that matches your skills, goals and interests? Fifty-two percent of IT leaders report that by the time they post a job on an external job board, they have already started the process of finding and reaching out to candidates.
