I say this in an honest way not to criticize but to objectively and proactively address what happens to all organizations if the status quo is allowed to ferment too long. Fortunately, your Board was more than up for the challenge. Some of the items we discussed and hope to implement with your help this year are: guest editorials, a power quality seminar, energy engineering student outreach through an energy management project contest at year end, a two part new building project tour (design/construction phase and implementation/ completion), expanded job postings on the web site, and a call for real world solutions of energy management problems from our members to post on the website. Please visit our website and read our newsletter on a regular basis to watch for these items and our requests for your help in implementing them as we continue to make your Chapter the best. Two requests for this month are: for a member to come forward to be Chapter Vice President for the remainder of 2013 (Please remember that this year s Vice President will be Chapter President in 2014), and for a member to offer to present their experience at a future meeting regarding their handling of an ethics issue. Don t forget to please let me know by the end of February the certification training that you would like to have the Board host during We will try to have it set up for September or October. I would like to have the Board vote their approval concerning the certification training in March so we can coordinate everything with AEE, our membership, and other interested Texas Chapters. Thanks to William Ball, LEED AP Product Manager Noesis Energy, for his January meeting presentation on the Noesis Energy free online energy management service. Our February meeting will be held from 11:30 to 1:00 PM on February 26th at Texas Land and Cattle, 5510 S. IH 35 Building C, (at Stassney) Austin, TX. Our presenter will be, Dan Marsh of CSM, who will talk about PICV Valves, Automatic Balancing Valves and Their Differences. The talk will focus on the benefits of these valves in hydronic systems. 2 Page 2 Dan Marsh, CSM Flowcon Americas, LLC February Speaker Mr. Marsh has twenty-two years experience as a commercial HVAC mechanic, specializing in chilled water systems and their controls. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business late in life at the age of 40 and left behind being a mechanic. He has twelve years experience in energy management techniques, specializing in flow control products, and is a Certified Sustainability Management professional. "Green Dan" is an advocate of renewable energy and educating youth on photovoltaics, solar thermal, and wind power systems. His home was featured on Discovery's Planet Green Channel on a show named 'Renovation Nation' in due to all the innovations he designed and personally implemented. February Presentation PICV Valves, Automatic Balancing Valves and their Differences This presentation will cover balancing valves and the positive effect they have on hydronic systems, specifically automatic flow control valves and PICV (pressure independent control valves) in HVAC chilled and hot water systems, and the significant differences between them. FlowCon Americas LLC: Commercial HVAC Balancing Valve The Total Authority Valve is a pressure-independent dynamic balancing valve for commercial HVAC systems. It was designed especially for multi-circuit HVAC systems that typically include multiple fan coils, radiators, and heat pumps. It can also be used in limiting the flow to individual heat exchangers or domestic water tanks. The valve keeps the flow rate constant regardless of fluctuations in pressure or temperature, and instantly compensates for pressure fluctuations caused by other valves in the system opening or closing. It also helps maintain a constant temperature so that the entire system works at optimum efficiency. The valve is externally adjustable, so the desired maximum flow rate can be easily changed while the system is operating. Features include 51 distinct flow rate settings per valve size and control range; double union end connection with a wide selection of end fittings, or double flange connection for ease of installation; and tamperproof - the adjustment control is operated by means of a special key. 3 Page 3 Annual Call For Scholarships Attention all Undergraduate and Graduate degree candidates enrolled in Engineering or Energy Management programs! The Austin-San Antonio Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers (A-SA AEE) is extending an invitation for students active in, or entering into major (or minor) in energy management, energy engineering, or energy technology related fields at accredited colleges, universities and technical schools to apply for scholarships.
