1 Greene1 Scott Greene Watch Out Teenage drivers are some of the worst drivers on the road. Many people will agree with me, but teenagers themselves will think I m wrong. Teenage drivers cause more wrecks than anyone else on the road. To solve this problem, teenage drivers should be retested for their driver s license twice a year. Although many drivers think because they passed their driver s test with flying colors they are ok to drive in the real world. I have had firsthand experience with bad ten drivers. After I had just turned sixteen, my parents warned me about other teenage drivers and not to text or talk on the phone while driving. I wasn t worried about what they said. Shortly after getting my license I was encountered with a close call. I was texting and not paying attention to the road and ran a red light. I missed a passing car by about two feet going fifty miles per hour. I considered myself lucky and promised myself to focus only on my driving. A couple of months after I had just missed a frightening wreck, I was on the opposing side of the wreck. I was on the way to work when I was stopped by a red light, which is not very unusual. As the light turned green and I started to accelerate and I looked to my right and saw a car heading for me at full speed. There was no use in slamming on brakes, so I tried to accelerate so she would hit the bed of my truck and I would be safe. It didn t turn out so good and she hit me right in my passenger s side door. I was shaken up pretty bad, but I was thankful the wreck didn t happen on the driver s side door. After the police report was filed and everything was settled, I found out that the driver was a seventeen year old who was talking on the phone. It made me furious, but I realized I made the same mistake only a few months earlier.
2 Greene2 A lot of the bad driving can be blamed on talking on the cell phone or texting. While the new texting while driving law has solved some problems, there are other distractions like having friends in the car or even messing with your radio. Even if all distractions have been taken care of, there are still awful drivers on the road. One reason this is, is because drivers who are fifteen years of age only have one year to learn how to drive. One year of driving around with parents is not enough practice to drive alone. Two years should be the minimum amount of driving time for a fifteen year old to learn how to drive. A big issue that is over looked is the attitudes of teen drivers. Attitudes contribute a great deal to bad driving. Teen drivers are overconfident in their driving abilities. According to a study conducted by the Allstate Foundation shows that teens are more aggressive drivers, but want to be known as a good or skilled driver. The results of the study shows that a majority of teens (65 percent) are confident in their own driving skills, 77 percent of teens admit they have felt unsafe with another teen's driving, 82 percent of teens want to be known as a safe/skilled driver, and only 23 percent of teens agree that most teens are good drivers (Allstate). The driver s test itself is another contribution to the bad driving. It is a very nerve racking experience and can get anyone s heart pumping. When people fail the driver s test it s either because they are too nervous or they are just a downright bad driver. The driver s test is the easiest test I have ever taken, and I m sure I am not the only one who thinks that. A ten year old can get in a car and drive it around a block and stop at a red light. The driver s test proves nothing but knowing how to put a car in drive and work the gas and brake. The test does nothing for heavy traffic on the interstate, construction zones, or other congested traffic areas. I think everyone will agree that the way you drive now is not the same way you drove at age sixteen while taking the driver s test.
3 Greene3 Many people would argue that retesting these teen drivers would be a waste of time. If a teen has already taken and passed their driver s test they shouldn t have a problem going back and getting updated. An extra hour or two out of your busy schedule can help save a life. When you talk about someone s life, things start to get more serious. It shouldn t even be a question as to why drivers have to retake their test. Teens don t think wrecks can happen to them, but they are the main ones. Another advantage to retesting drivers is because insurance companies will have faith in teens. Many insurance companies do not trust young drivers because they don t know you personally, so they follow what the statistics show. An anonymous writer from an accredited website describes this scenario perfectly, The high prices on young drivers car insurance makes it difficult to start driving your own car even after you have finally acquired your driver's license. This is because car insurers have compiled a lot of information on traffic accidents are can conclude that teenage drivers under 21 years old are more likely to cause an accident compared to other experienced drivers (Anonymous). If you look at all the advantages to retesting these teen drivers, you can see that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Taking time out or your day, or paying the DMV employees a little bit more to be there for the retest is a little sacrifice for the bigger picture for our roads being safer. I have been on both sides of the issue, and it is very important to get teens educated the right way about driving. This isn t just a temporary problem solver, but a permanent fix to a bad problem.
