23 Classic Dewey: Zeros, Wholes, Ts, and ToPs Zeros When and how to use 0 or 00, etc. When to drop the 0 Does it approximate the whole? Standard subdivisions T1 has relationships to basic schedules, e.g. T related to build for in Computer science; computer programming, programs, data; special computer methods Check the table of preference Schedules and tables ToP not always obvious in WebDewey Read up the schedule to the broader topic Might be in manual notes, e.g. T3A-T3C T1 has a ToP, too! 31 WHO WE ARE The Nassau Library System is a cooperative library system Consortium comprised of 54 member libraries and a Service Center for the libraries Each member library is independent, autonomous, supported by local taxes, and governed by its own board of trustees Innovative/Sierra ILS

32 CATALOGING AT NLS Member Libraries order and receive materials at their local libraries Provisional bib records created Automatically through the Acquisition process Keyed in by Member Library staff Item records created by Member Library staff

33 CATALOGING AT NLS NLS-Cataloging Services (3 professionals, 4 copy catalogers) Replaces all Provisional records with full cataloging records Creates original cataloging records Authority work Catalog 3,000 to 5,000 titles per month (10% original)

34 CLASSIFICATION AT NLS Cataloging Services leaves any Dewey that resides in any bibliographic record Original catalogers add Dewey numbers to copy cataloging bib records (non-fiction, all formats) that are lacking 082/092 Original catalogers assign Dewey numbers for all original cataloging bib records (non-fiction, all formats)

35 MEMBER LIBRARY CLASSIFICATION Many materials come in Shelf Ready 082/092 is a suggested number Member Library staff can accept or reject Call numbers are keyed in manually into the Call No. field of the Item Record

36 CLASSIFICATION CHALLENGES/SOLUTIONS Vendor supplied processing truncates or misassigns call numbers, resulting in invalid numbers. Member Library staff: All numbers reviewed and validated No numbers reviewed and validated Some libraries opt to have some materials not fully processed (call no. ranges, audience)

41 CONSULTANT ROLE IN TRANSITION Any straight non-dewey solution is labor intensive Relabelling ; editing item records in catalog Shelf space Non-Dewey solutions require local documentation and training Sometime the easiest solution is the best

52 ADVICE FROM ME (THE CONSULTANT) Think about the work involved in maintaining the newly organized collection Document the classification Update the classification Correct the classification Materials will never arrive Shelf Ready Classification will never be assigned by anyone else except YOU Any ILS based collection evaluation tool might only work successfully with Dewey

53 ADVICE FROM THE FIELD Spend a little more time developing list before plunging into reclassifying Label books outside AND inside All departments have to be trained in finding materials in the re-organized space Signage is the best promotion
