1 College of Public Health (CPH) The College of Public Health (CPH) at Phoenicia University is dedicated to promoting excellence in teaching, research and community services by crafting professionals who provide leadership in evidence practice and ensures healthier societies. The purpose promotes the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities. CPH students will be involved in research and outreach hands-on projects to become leaders in the provision of care, discovery of new treatment modalities, and administering access to care for the population it serves. Objectives: The objectives of the College of Public Health are as follows: Pursue a diverse educational degree completion program that allows health professionals to continue gainful employment in their chosen field Develop and boost the students leadership and health care knowledge through academic inquiry while applying critical research skills and using current, practical health care models. Enhance the students understanding of diverse population groups in health care and prepare them to take leadership roles in the rapidly changing health care environment. Enhance the students understanding of the political, social, legal and ethical issues that may be encountered and have an impact on the health care practice. Gain knowledge that helps bridge between theory, research, community public health awareness and clinical care. Degrees: CPH offers two undergraduate degrees: BSc. In Public Health BSc. In Speech Therapy A. BSc. in Public Health A BSc. in Public Health will introduce students to global health issues, such as health disparities, emerging infectious diseases, chronic diseases, communication in healthcare, and modes of health care delivery in private and public healthcare systems. This program will also expose undergraduates to the effects of genetics, nutrition, and society on health and disease. Graduates of the Public Health program will commit to promote health and well-being of communities and to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and environmental issues across the lifespan and throughout rural, urban, and unprivileged societies. 1 P a g e

4 Course Descriptions PBHL 201.Introduction to Public Health- 3cr This course provides an overview of the principles and practice of public health in a global and local context by examining the philosophy, purpose, history, organization, functions, tools, activities and results of public health practice. Case studies and a variety of practice-related exercises serve as a basis for student participation in real world public health problem-solving simulations on important problems and issues facing public health. The last part is dedicated to the Lebanese Public Health System and the obstacles facing it. PBHL 202.Population Health - 3cr This course will examine the key reasons why population health is important to consider, not just by healthcare professionals but by local, national and international policy makers. It explores some of the major health issues in the world and considers some of their causes and their consequences, in addition to ways of improving the health at a population level, including different approaches to the design of specific interventions. PBHL 203.Population Health Assessment- 3cr This course provides students with the competencies needed to enhance the health of the community. It sheds the light on the role of empowerment in community health, and the central role of community residents in the identification of local issues, goals, and priorities affecting their lives and neighborhoods. PBHL 204.Theories in Health Behavior and Education- 3cr This course provides a deep understanding of individual health behavior. It explores the application of cognitive, psychosocial and environmental theories of health behavior, in addition to the behavioral dimensions of major acute and chronic diseases and conditions. It also helps students apply relevant psychological, social and behavioral theories to predict health behavior. PBHL 205.Economy in Healthcare- 3cr This course examines the field of health economics that is used to promote health through the study of health care providers, hospitals and clinics, managed care and public health promotion activities. By applying economic theories of consumer, producer and social choice, health economics aims to understand the behavior of individuals, health care providers, public and private organizations, and governments in decision-making. PBHL 206.Policy & Politics in Public Health - 3cr This course helps students identify the dynamics of political and economic forces on health. It explores the strategies that drive an effective global public health response and develop knowledge of how the interplay of good science, policy, and politics at the local, national, and 4 P a g e

This course also discusses the causes of underdevelopment and the reasons for the growth in social inequalities, both worldwide and within nations. PBHL 207. Health Promotion Programs- 3cr This course covers the principles of health promotion planning models applicable to school, community, and worksite programs. Students will learn how to plan and implement health promotion projects in addition to the application of evaluation protocols of those projects through examining the process, impact and outcome measures. This course go through an investigation of existing programs and current literature in Lebanon and globally. PBHL 208.Counselling Communication Skills- 3cr This course teaches students skills enhancement in effective communication for health care professionals. Theoretical content for this course involves principles of effective counseling, theories of individual and groups counseling approaches and theories of group dynamics in addition to some marketing concepts in health care. Skill enhancement involves engaging students in simulated experiential learning opportunities with colleagues using real life examples from clinical settings and interchanging case studies. PBHL 210.Basic Nutrition- 3cr This course emphasizes on latest nutritional guidelines; it also covers human needs of macro and micro-nutrients, and elaborates on their sources, functions in the body and in food, digestion, and their effect on health. PBHL 211.Nutrition in Public Health & Disease Prevention (Therapeutics) - 3cr This course covers the basics of normal nutrition for optimal health outcomes and evidence-based diets for a variety of diseases (Heart Diseases, Kidneys, Diabetes, Cancer, Liver etc.). Participants will review the fundamentals of nutrition science and build upon these to explore emerging diet therapies, to analyze nutrition research and to plan well-balanced meals and dietary interventions for individuals with a number of diseases and health conditions. PBHL 212.Food Security and Safety Regulations- 3cr This course provides an understanding of the legal and regulatory complexities of food production, labeling, and distribution. The program will provide students with the knowledge required for companies and organizations that grow, process, distribute, or sell foods and beverages while complying with regulatory statutes for the production, distribution, and commercialization of food products. 5 P a g e
6 PBHL 213.Nutrition Therapy in Public Health - 3cr This course will provide students with nutritional concepts for specific disease states, including gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic concerns, cardiovascular disease and hypertension, anemia, renal disease and bone health. Students will synthesize medical literature and nutrition literature to determine which diets to implement for each patient type. PBHL 220.Fundamentals in Environmental Health- 3cr This course examines the impact of environmental health issues and the role of environmental factors in health with an emphasis on characterization, assessment, and control of environmental hazards. The specific topics covered during this course include safe drinking water, air quality, hazardous waste disposal and environmental disease clusters. The course concludes by examining the impact of human activity, such as energy use and pollution, on the environment and how human-induced environmental change, in turn, impacts public health and that of the planet as a whole. PBHL 280. Tutorial in Public Health -2 cr This tutorial consists of independent research, or directed reading and includes the presentation of a report, or a thesis on the work. PBHL 281.Public Health Seminar- 1 cr The seminar is centered on a public health-related theme and provides students with an opportunity to use appropriate methods to present an evidence-based review of a related topic. PBHL 282. Public Health Internship I (2 cr) A summer period of guided work experience, supervised by faculty member, and designed to acquaint students with the public health profession and help them acquire skills necessary for finding future work. PBHL 283. Public Health Internship II (3 cr) A summer period of guided work experience, supervised by faculty member, and designed to acquaint students with the public health profession and help them acquire skills necessary for finding future work. CHEM 201.General Principles of Chemistry- 3 cr This course introduces students to the general principles and theories of chemistry. It covers atomic structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, mass spectrum, properties of gases, basic thermodynamics, kinetic theory, solids and liquids, solutions, acids and bases, and chemical equilibrium. 6 P a g e
7 CHEM 202.Introductory Chemical Techniques (lab) - 2 cr. This is a laboratory course that introduces students to chemical analysis in a series of laboratory experiments covering principles and experimental techniques in thermochemistry, kinetic and electrochemistry. Students learn to handle basic tools and equipment and conduct wet chemistry experiments. CHEM 209.Basic Organic Chemistry- 3 cr This course emphasizes on the relationship between the structure and properties of Carbon containing molecules; it also covers stereochemistry and reactions of important functional organic groups. CHEM 210. Basic Organic Chemistry Lab - 1 cr This course covers basic experiments in organic chemistry; students will develop skills in conducting several organic reactions through hand-on laboratory techniques of extraction, distillation, chromatography, and many others. STAT 202. Basic Statistics for Sciences- 3 cr. This course covers the topics of population and sampling, random variables, discrete probability, conditional probability, independence, expectation, discrete and continuous distributions, statistical inference, point and interval estimation and tests of hypotheses. Statistical applications for sciences are stressed, using such data analysis techniques as analysis of variance, correlation, and regression. COMM 214. Interpersonal Communication- 3cr This course is an overview of interpersonal communication, which is the exchange of symbols used to achieve self-presentation, relational and instrumental goals. The course includes the study and practice of the basic elements of interpersonal communication with emphasis on perception, meanings, attention, listening, feedback, and communication barriers. Particular attention is given to improving interpersonal communication skills. Prerequisite or co-requisite: ENGL 202. COMM 218. Investigative Journalism- 3cr This course teaches students how to apply an investigative and data mindset to journalism, from understanding how to background an individual or entity using online databases to compiling or combining disparate sets of information in ways that unveil wrongdoing or mismanagement. The course focuses on mining texts, tracking associations, and using visualizations. Stories produced apply investigative techniques to beat reporting, breaking news, and long-form journalism. It also addresses the psychosocial impact of communicative disorders on clients and their families. SPTH 202.Introduction to Communication Disorders- 3cr This course provides students with an overview of the fields of speech language pathology and audiology. It examines basic knowledge and terminology related to human communication disorders, such as articulation, fluency, voice, language, pragmatics, hearing, swallowing, and cognition. The course covers the basic principles of evaluating and assessing individuals with communication disorders. SPTH 203.Introduction to Health & Rehabilitation Professions - 3cr This course explores the roles and functions of the health and rehabilitation disciplines. It discusses the health care system and its impact on society. Students learn the roles and expectations of training and educational preparation of health and rehabilitation professionals across the world. SPTH 204.Head & Neck Anatomy - 3cr This course provides students with basic knowledge regarding the anatomy and physiology of the head and neck region. The focus is directed to oral embryology and histology to better understand the relationship of tissues and how they are adapted to functional needs. 10 P a g e
11 SPTH 205.Diagnostic Audiology - 3cr This course examines the development and application of advanced diagnostic procedures for audiological diagnosis including behavioral and electrophysiological measures. It also presents administration and interpretation of diagnostic audiological tests. SPTH 206.Dyslexia Learning Disorders: Assessment and Rehabilitation - 3cr This course provides students with basic understanding of the principal theories and concepts in relation to dyslexia. It aims to help professionals identify and support young people with this specific learning difficulty through examination of the curriculum and consideration of more flexible curricular arrangements. SPTH 207. The Autism Spectrum Disorders - 3cr This course addresses characteristics of children and youth with autism spectrum disorders; trends and issues associated with autism spectrum disorders; and effective practices and strategies for structuring, managing, and promoting social skill development and social interactions among learners with autism spectrum disorders. SPTH 208. Genetic Diseases and Speech Therapy - 3cr This course is designed to expose students to the genetic advances in the study of speech and language disorders and the identification of genetic defects in speech therapy disorders. SPTH 209. Neuropsychology I - 3cr This course introduces students to the theory and practice of clinical neuropsychology. This specialized subfield of clinical psychology aims to assess and interpret the relationship between nervous system function, cognition, emotion and behavior; and to apply this knowledge to the design of individualized patient interventions. Students will gain an understanding of the field through review of adult and pediatric cognitive and neurological disorders. SPTH 210.Lifecycle Psychopathology: Child, Adolescence, and Adulthood - 4cr This course introduces students to the concept of mental disorders and the skills needed to assess disturbances of thought, emotion and behavior. Students are expected to learn the characteristics, psychopathology of some of the psychiatric syndromes seen through the life cycle. SPTH 220. Language Development - 2cr The purpose of this course is to make students familiar with the growth of speech and language abilities in typically developing children. It addresses the philosophical, social, intellectual, and emotional contexts of language acquisition and usage. The course also examines the acquisition of phonological, morphological, and syntactic systems; the role of both parent and child in the acquisition of communicative competence. 11 P a g e
12 SPTH 221. Arabic Language Development 2 cr This course introduces students to the elements of standard Arabic language within the cultural context of Arabic-speaking people, and the growth of speech and language. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and the normal sequence of language acquisition and usage. SPTH 222. Language Development Lab: English 1 cr This laboratory course provides students with application of theories of language development as they relate to English language. SPTH 223. Language Development Lab: Arabic 1 cr This laboratory course provides students with application of theories of language development as they relate to Arabic language. SPTH 211. Aural Rehabilitation 3 cr This course will help students gain a basic understanding of the principles of aural rehabilitation for hearing impaired (HI) and deaf infants, children, and adults. Students will be exposed to hearing loss and hearing handicap in relation to speech understanding and communication; to the principles of amplification systems; to assist listening and alerting devices and to assess communication and communication strategies. In addition, students will acquire knowledge concerning the roles and work sites of professionals working with HI and deaf individuals, and the impact of hearing loss and deafness on the individual, family, and society. SPTH 212. Clinical Assessment & Aural Rehabilitation 3 cr This course will provide students with a broad understanding of amplification systems and principles and methods of aural rehabilitation as they apply to children who have hearing difficulties or who are deaf. Amplification systems to be covered will include digital hearing aids, cochlear implants and a full range of assistive devices. Aural rehabilitation topics will emphasize patient management and will include communication strategies, conversation styles and speech recognition assessment. SPTH 213. Speech Rehabilitation 3 cr This course provides students with audiological techniques and programs to help those individuals with speech disorders communicate. Students will learn the basic options in amplification devices available for persons with hearing loss and knowledge of function, in addition to the intervention principles and practices in aural rehabilitation including auditory training, and speech reading. 12 P a g e
13 SPTH 214. Dysphagia 2 cr This course exposes students to information related to the normal swallowing processes and the assessment and treatment of both adult and pediatric dysphagia. Students will be familiar with: the medical diagnoses that cause dysphagia and the swallowing deficits that present with the different etiologies; Knowledge of the different types of feeding methods and the benefits and risks of each; ability to conduct a complete dysphagia evaluation; understand the unique nature of each patient and family with regards to cultural issues and food; and understand the different types of problems that exist across the life span. SPTH 215. Rehabilitation in Eating Difficulties Clinic 1 cr This course prepares students to the rehabilitation process in eating difficulties clinics. Eating difficulties treatment centers are intended to decrease symptoms of the eating difficulties, address underlying causes, facilitate education about body image, healthy exercise, nutrition, family dynamics, and relapse prevention. SPTH 216. Sign Language 3 cr This course introduces students to the basics of fingerspelling, numbers, colors, facial grammar and sentence structure; students will also learn conversational/cultural behaviors necessary to hold a beginning-level conversation, with deaf/hard-of-hearing native users of the language. Introductory information about deaf culture will also be presented, along with deaf humor, to provide students with a broad picture of language and culture. SPTH 217. Voice Therapy I & II 3 cr This course introduces students to the approach of voice therapy, in order to treat voice disorders that involves vocal and physical exercises coupled with behavioral changes. SPTH 218. Voice Therapy Lab 1 cr This laboratory course includes experimental tools involved in speech and voice therapy. SPTH 280. Speech Therapy Internship I (2 cr) A summer period of guided work experience, supervised by a faculty member, and designed to acquaint students with speech therapy profession and help them acquire skills necessary for finding future work. SPTH 284. Speech Therapy Internship II (2 cr) A summer period of guided work experience, supervised by a faculty member, and designed to acquaint students with speech therapy profession and help them acquire skills necessary for finding future work. 13 P a g e
14 SPTH 281.Advanced Practice in Speech Therapy Center 3 cr This practicum focuses on developing advanced speech therapy and rehabilitation skills in speech therapy centers and specialized clinics.
