2 Important Information In this guide, you will learn how to setup our VoIP gateway and Routers for Point-to-Point operation. Point-to-Point means making VoIP call to another H.323 gateway or IP Phone directly. VoIP Gatways: VoIP 422/404/440/800 VoIP Routers: VoIP 404R/ 440R/200R/110R Knowing your VoIP Gateway/Router FXO: The FXO ports connect to the PSTN line (analogue telephone line) or company's PBX line (the line to the extension phone). It allows the VoIP device to communicate with the ordinary telephone system. Having the PXO port is necessary if you want your device to link with PBX or outside telephone line. FXS: The FXS ports connect to your ordinary telephone or FAX. Using your telephone or FAX, your can dial out through the gateway to other VoIP gateway or IP Phone. 1

3 E&M: E&M is an abbreviation for Ear and Mouth. It is a common interface used by PBX that support bi-directional call control. Which means that calls can be made from any PBX and disconnected by other PBX. The E&M interface allow PBX to detect the hang up signal more accurately which eliminates locked ports and disconnection problem. VoIP Gateway Back panel Console Port: For configuration through the RS-232 serial port. Connect the console port to your PC's serial port using the included serial cable. Use Windows' Hyper Terminal program, and set the settings to 19200bps, N, 8, 1. Then press enter to activate. For configuration using Command Line, please read the user's guide. LAN Port: This is both LAN and WAN port. It is a LAN when you need to connect with PC for web configuration. It is also the WAN port to connect with broadband modem. FXO Port: The FXO ports connect to the PSTN line (analogue telephone line) or company's PBX line (the line to the extension phone). It allows the VoIP device to communicate with the ordinary telephone system. Having the PXO port is necessary if you want your device to link with PBX or outside telephone line. 2

4 FXS Port: The FXS ports connect to your ordinary telephone or FAX. Using your telephone or FAX, your can dial out through the gateway to other VoIP gateway or IP Phone. PSTN Backup Port: The PSTN backup port is different from FXO. It allows the user to press certain key to use the PSTN line for phone call. But it can not forward call from VoIP to PSTN. *note: The port configuration is different between different models. Installation procedure The installation procedure involve the following major steps 1. Test your Gateway. 2. Connect your VoiP gateway/router to Internet 3. Setup the Dial Plan 4. Install your machine in the environment. We will go through each procedure Step-by-Step in the following setup. Test Your Gateway The first step is to test your gateway to see if your telephone set, PBX, and Telephone Line is compatible with the gateway. The Gateway's FXS/FXO port is only compatible with analogue telephone set and analogue telephone line. 1. Connect your telephone sets to the FXS ports of the gateway/router 2. Connect your PSTN phone line or the PBX extension line to the FXO ports of the gateway/router. 3

5 3. The ports have the following default telephone number Port 1: 201 Port 2: 202 Port 3: 203 Port 4: Port 8: Please call from one FXS port to another FXS port. For example, if you have 2 telephone sets connected to port #3 and port #4. Please pick up the phone #3 and dial "204". The phone #4 should ring, please pick up the phone to make sure the voice works properly. 5. Please call from one FXS port to FXO port. If you have one telephone set connected at port 3, and the PSTN line connected at FXO port 1. Pick up phone#3 and dial "201", you should hear a second dial tone. You should be able to make call outside to PSTN. If you have one telephone set connected at port 3, and the PBX extension line (line that goes from your PBX to your phone) connected at FXO port 2. Pick up phone#3 and dial "202", you should hear a second dial tone. Dial an extension number should connect to the extension. From the above test, the following explain the condition of failure. If test 4 failed, it means your telephone set is not analogue. Please replace it with an analogue phone (phone that is used in most home). If test 5-a failed, it means your PSTN line is running on ISDN. You will need an ISDN Voice TA adapter to use the Gateway's FXO port. 4

6 If test 5-b failed, it means your PBX is digital. In this case, please check whether the CO lines from phone company to your PBX is analogue. If it is, you can following the installation process in the final section. If it is not, you might need an ISDN Voice TA adapter to use the gateway with PBX. Connect to Internet You should refer the the section in your manual for more detail instruction on Internet setup. 1. Open your web browser and enter your Gateway's IP address to configure the web management. The default IP is , user's name "eitg", password is "123" 2. Please refer to your user's guide on how to setup the VoIP gateway/router's WAN port for Internet connection. 3. Dynamic DNS: If you have dynamic IP address, please make sure to sign up with Dyndns.org and configure your Dynamic DNS setup from "NAT->Advanced Features->Dynamic DNS" in the left menu. Please make sure when signing up with dyndns.org. Only choose a domain that ends with "dyndns.org". For example, please choose "myname.dyndns.org". Do not choose "myname.gotdns.org"..etc. If you have a VoIP Gateway Router, please make sure to enter only "myname" in the Hostname field. Do not enter the entire domain name. Refer to the graph below: 5

7 After Save and Reboot. Please go to the "System Status" in the beginning menu to check whether the Dynamic DNS is up. 6

8 4. DNS INFO: For Gateways without router function (VoIP-422/404/440/800), you need to set the DNS server information. Please use telnet or console port to get into the command line. Below is the example procedure: 1. Telnet Enter the user's name and password 3. On the command prompt, type: set h323 dns_ip <DNS IP address> config activate config store reboot the machine 4. *note the <DNS IP address> is the IP address of your ISP's DNS server. If you don't know what it is, you can use instead. 5. Working with Router: If you have VoIP Gateways (VoIP-422/404/440/800) and you want to connect it under a router. You need to open virtual server ports in order to let the H.323 traffic go through the gateway. Please use one of the methods below (not both): Open the DMZ port on your router to the gateway. Open the following virtual server ports to the gateway: TCP port range from 1000 to 5000 UDP port range from to Please note that the H.323 VoIP use TCP port 1720 for Call Signal. And UDP for RTP. If your ISP blocks those ports, you can change it by going to "VoIP->H.323->General Settings" on the Web UI. If changed, be sure both side must use the same Call Signal and RTP port. 7

9 Making the Dial Plan What is a Dial Plan? When you pick up a telephone and dial a number, the VoIP gateway will translate this number into a destination IP address. The list of phone numbers in reference to their final destinations is called Dial Plan. Take for example; you can set the phone number "30" to your branch office and "40" to your customer's office. To set up the dial plan. From the Web management's Main menu, click on "VoIP->DialPlan". You will see the following menu. What is the Phone, Hunt Group, and Destination ID? Instead of just simply define Phone number to Destination. The VoIP gateway add one more level called Hunt group to make "dialing one number and try multiple destinations" possible. The gateway will try the next destination if it is busy, until it connects. This is very useful if you try to reach the same groups of people in different gateways. The structure of the dial plan is: Phone number -> Hunt Group -> Destination ID. Each hunt group can have more than one destinations. After you setup your dial-plan, please remember to "Store Settings to Non-Volatile Storage". 8

10 Phone number: Phone number is the number you dial that will associate with a remote IP address. When you actually dial a number, it is composed of the <phone number>+<remote gateway's dial plan number>. Take for example, if the number "30" is your branch office. To dial into your branch office's port#3, you should dial "30203". The "30" is your local phone setting for the branch office. The "203" is your destination gateway's dialplan for port#3. The phone settings have some parameters below: Telephone number: The telephone number for dialing. Hunt Group ID: The hunt group number that the telephone number is pointing to Min Digit: The minimum digit dialed before your gateway starts to call. For example, if you setup "30" for branch office. You can put "2" in this field. Max Digit: The maximum number of digit your gateway will wait before start calling. For example, if you setup "30" for branch office and the brach office have default dialplan "201~204" for port 1 to port 4. Then you should put "5" in this field because you will always dial "30+<3 digit port number>" to your remote gateway. But please make sure that the Max Digit should be the same across the dial-plan phone settings, otherwise, the router will stop to listen to the remaining digits if the dialing exceed just one phone number's maximum digit settings. Please note that the Max digit should always exceed the maximum length of your possible dial number. Otherwise, your call will start before you even finish input the digits. Strip Length: When sending to remote gateway, the number of digits to clip off the telephone number you dial. Take for example, if you dial "30203" to your branch office's port 3. You don't want to send the entire "30203" to your branch office's gateway, otherwise, it will not recognize phone dialed. Therefore, you should set the Strip Length to "2". So only "203" is sent to remote gateway. As a rule of thumb, you should set the strip length to the number of digits in telephone number. 9

11 Hunt Group: Hunt group allows a phone number to have multiple destinations. If one phone number only goes to one destination. Simply assign the same number for Hunt Group and Destination ID, this will make the association easier to remember. To add more than one destination for a hunt group. After enter the first destination ID, click on "More destinations for the Same Hunt Group" then enter more. Do not press "complete" until you have entered all the destination ID. In the example below. The "Phone Number 200" points to "Huntgroup 20". The Huntgroup 20 has 2 destinations, Port 3 and Port 4 (Destination ID can be local port or remote IP address). Therefore, when you dial 200, the gateway will automatically select the port that is not busy. Destination ID: Destination ID is the where you assign the final destination of a phone number. There are 3 types of destination you can setup Remote Destination IP: If your final destination is a remote gateway with fixed IP address. You should add this type to assign the IP address of the remote Gateway or IP phone. 10

12 Remote Host Name: If your remote gateway use Dynamic DNS, you should add this type to put domain name (e.g. myname.dyndns.org) as your final destination. Local Destination Channel: If your final destination is your local port. You should add the destination channel. The destination channel number is one less than the port number. Take for example, Port 1 has destination channel number 0, Port 2 has destination channel number 1...etc. Trouble shooting FAQ Q: It is okay when I make VoIP call from the FXS port. However, the problem occurs when I connect my gateway's FXO port to an analogue PBX. When I try to make a VoIP call through PBX, the phone just rings forever or hearing busy signal. A: The problem is your PBX ringing interval is different from our default value. To change it: Use console port or telnet to your gatway Type "set port <port> fxo ringing_inter_cycle <msec>", the <port> is your FXO port number (for example '0' for the first port) The <msec> is the ringing interval. We recommend trying Type "config activate" Type "config store". The 4500 msec is from our experience. But yours might be different. You can measure the time by connecting the PBX extension line (the one that was connected to your FXO port) to an extension phone. Then call this phone and measure the time between the start of the first ring to the start of the second ring. 11

13 Q: Can I make the gateway to dial a number automatically upon off hook? (hotline) A: Please use the following command from console port: set port <port> dial_in <plar number> config activate confg store reboot the router For example, if you want to set Port 1 (it is actually port 0 to the software). And dial to upon offhook, then the command is set port 0 dial_in config activate confg store reboot the router MEMO 12
