1 Kyle Pollock Learning about Technology through Global Healthcare Global Healthcare is defined as crossing borders for care and requires innovation in ways to communicate with different cultures and countries in different stages of economic development. Technology is an essential tool to help push the advancement and expansion of global healthcare through improved communication and care. New technology allows healthcare professionals to connect with and care for patients. Further outreach of services to patients can increase with understanding its conventions or Telemedicine in particular. Telemedicine is the use of technology to connect the patient and physician across the globe while patient data is sent through virtual networks to be stored for diagnosis and future follow-up treatment. 1 Technology and Telemedicine will be major topics of discussion in the Global Connected Care Conference and 3rd MediTour Expo with speakers versed in communicative technology and technology used for treatments. Technology for Treatment Technology in global healthcare expands opportunities and improves outcomes. One who certainly knows that is Jay H. Sanders, MD, the President and CEO of Global Telemedicine Group. He is also a Professor of Medicine (Adjunct) at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and a Founding Board Member and President Emeritus of the American Telemedicine Association. Known to many as the "Father of Telemedicine," he developed the first statewide Telemedicine system, the first Correctional Telemedicine program, the first tele-homecare technology, called "The Electronic House Call," and the first Telemedicine kiosk. 2 Dr. Sanders has much to offer not only as a pioneer in Telemedicine programs, but as a teacher and a researcher who engages in the continuous forward movement of Telemedicine in healthcare. His published 1
2 work on Telemedicine signifies the potential of Telemedicine as a strategy in the healthcare industry for providing alternatives ways to deliver healthcare more efficiently. 3 Technology can improve quantitative and qualitative research. Bradly Jacobs, MD, MPH is an integrative medicine practitioner, author and senior health and wellness executive. He will be speaking on The Future of Integrative Medicine for Global Care. Dr. Jacobs has an extensive track record in working with health information technology, and building technology platforms for conducting research to improve healthy sustainable lifestyles. Dr. Jacobs is also co-founder of SVP Clinical Affairs and Senior Medical Director of Mytrus Inc., a clinical research organization dedicated to providing technology and services for remotely-conducted direct-to-participant clinical trials. 4 His technology decreases the time and cost of conducting clinical trials while reducing environmental impact. Another example in which technology can be used for treatment is found in the clinical are of Global In- Vitro-Fertilization. Katryn Kaycoff-Manos, a co-founder of Global In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), and Agency for Solutions, Inc., will be delivering a presentation on Using Technology to Build an International Practice. She understands the technology used with global IVF and how this accessible technology is vital to patient outreach due to legal restrictions, and the price in availability of technology or clinical trials. She has been quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Parenting Magazine, Conceive On-Line and numerous books, as a fertility/surrogacy expert. 5 Technology for Communication Technology used for communication in global healthcare raises our ability to quickly and conveniently send and receive information. Devices used include the phone, T.V., internet, and many newer evolving mobile devices. 6 Companies in Global Healthcare are experimenting with ways to enhance communication, and reach out to specific audiences with relevant information for the technology that is used. 3 Marketing is a field, which is experimenting with theses different methods of communication to build and enhance businesses. We will have at our conference, speakers to share their experience and expertise with 2
3 you, in using these applications for marketing and communication. Lauri Berger de Brito, the adjacent co -founder of Global In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), and Agency for Solutions, Inc., will be delivering her keynote speech during Using Technology to Build an International Practice, providing her expertise on building International clients and client retention through communicative technology. Her expertise in marketing and promotion of clinics and companies in the global IVF market and medical tourism has been exclusively sought out by many, and she will be sharing her skills and knowledge at the MediTour Expo. As marketing is used to keep up with the evolving technology, marketing is evolving itself. New ways of Marketing and outreach in global healthcare is bringing people together on the social network grid. Emily Michelman, Director of Web Development for Global IVF, brings families, stories, clinics and medical tourism companies closer together through online development and social networking. Her work at Vasser College was in Women s Studies Major which focused on family rights and reproductive technologies. 7 Frank Strack, a Global Mobility Practice Manager for CIBER, an international IT outsourcing and software implementation/integration consultancy works with mobile technology for communication. He helps drive business strategies and objectives leveraging mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones. 8 These devices are examples of the new technology that deliver specific information determined by the presentation of the device. The value in Global healthcare can be observed through aligning the implementation of these devices at the individual level with organizational objectives to improve quality, cost and efficiency. 6 Challenges in implementation include promoting consistency with confidentiality and security. Health IT and Safety Global healthcare is promoting available access to healthcare via mobile devices requiring specialized management and safety. Furthermore, there are issues to be raised with emerging mhealth technologies 6 3
4 as outlined in a paper by Intel. Can data be encrypted? Is there hardware or software assistance to speed encryption? What is the level of performance supporting software security solutions versus occurrence of security issues? Can you remotely disable a device if it is lost or stolen? Can access to a device be authenticated? 10 These are the many questions that determine the quality and safety of the Information Technology in global healthcare. 11 Dennis R. Moreau, PhD, has expertise specializing on developing solutions to improve IT efficiency and effectiveness for service, systems, security compliance and configuration management/optimization. 9 Dennis speaks for several international IT management and security conferences and will bring his extensive knowledge, experience, and vision. In addition, Nicholas P. Krut is an expert on and leading innovator in cyber security for the legal and financial sectors. He is the senior cyber security engineer for Colorado s leading managed security service provider (MSSP), Red Team USA. He will be presenting on the Best Practices for Securely Transferring Information through Cyber Space. He is currently focusing on stationary and portable data platforms for the medical industry. 10 Technology in healthcare is never static and always moving forward, bringing people together through communication, and accessible treatments, more safely. New technology requires innovation and vision to implement and disseminate effectively. Heuristic methods are important to optimize workflow issues and consumer preferences after understanding how the technology is used. We will hear from the some of the world s leaders and innovators on technology in global healthcare with each speaker bringing specialized knowledge on their respective industries. References 1.
