2 No Unemployed Need Apply Recent job listings across the country have included some variation of: No unemployed candidates will be considered at all 13.9 million Americans are unemployed right now Since 2009, the national unemployment rate has consistently been above 9%, the highest it s been in almost 30 years A recent review of job vacancy postings on popular sites like Monster.com, CareerBuilder and Craigslist revealed hundreds that said employers would consider (or at least strongly prefer ) only people currently employed or just recently laid off. 3 Hurting workers and companies This policy obviously hurts workers who have been laid off and are struggling to find jobs But it also hurts companies, by cutting off a huge pool of potential employees who might have the very skills and experience those companies need For the millions of jobless Americans struggling to climb out of the deepest jobs hole in many decades, nothing can be more demoralizing than the double-whammy of losing a job and then learning they will not be considered for new positions because they are not currently working. 4 It might soon be illegal Already, New Jersey has passed legislation that makes it illegal for employers to post job listings that state that employment is a requirement for applying for a job A similar piece of legislation has been proposed in the U.S. House of Representatives: The Fair Employment Opportunity Act of 2011 In a tough job market, where workers are competing against tens and sometimes hundreds of others for every available job opening, it is unjust for employers to discriminate against those who are unemployed. 5 Myths about the unemployed They were the deadweight at their last job; otherwise, why would they have been laid off? Fact: Firms of all sizes have had cutbacks or layoffs; many of these firms have skilled, trained personnel, but could just not hang on to their talent They re so desperate now that they ll take any job and then jump ship when the economy improves Fact: Unemployed candidates are likely to be more loyal to a company that hires them Being unemployed in the Great Recession, with round after round of layoffs and plant closings, is a poor proxy for being fired for performance issues as relatively few people who are out of work were fired. 6 Missing out on great workers The pool of unemployed workers is the largest it s been in more than a generation Inside that pool are talented workers from all industries, all levels of experience and all levels of talent A change in perspective i.e., unemployed does not equate with unemployable provides employers with a unique opportunity to tap into a rich and talented labor pool.
