1 DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION STUDIES MA / PGDip in Library & Information Studies PRELIMINARY READING LIST 2014 General You do not need to buy these books, but you may find it helpful to read them to get a feel for the subject area. Bawden, David and Robinson, Lyn. Introduction to Information Science. London: Facet, Gorman, Michael. The Enduring Library: Technology, Tradition and the Quest for Balance. Chicago; London: American Library Association, 2003 Totterdell, Anne. An Introduction to Library and Information Work, with contributions from Jane Gill and Alan Hornsey. London: Facet, 2005 Cataloguing Information updated by Anne Welsh in May Cataloguing is taught on Mondays in Term 1. Part-time students usually take these classes in their second year of study. As a student at UCL, you will have access to the RDA Toolkit, which provides the complete text of the two main cataloguing codes that you will be learning, Resource Description and Access (RDA) and Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2 nd edition (AACR2). There are copies of the looseleaf version of AACR2 in the DIS student common room. You will also be given access to appropriate pre-publication chapters from Cataloguing and Decision-making in the Hybrid Environment, which is due to be published later in It will be helpful to you to acquire and dip into a copy of the core text before classes start, and to explore the free sections of the Toolkit, Core Text Welsh, Anne and Batley, Sue. Practical Cataloguing: AACR, RDA and MARC21. London: Facet, 2012.
2 Additional Reading If you are interested in Cataloguing, you might like to look at some of the books listed here. Do not feel obligated to buy them, as they are all available in the Science Library, and you are not expected to read them in advance; they are listed because some people do like to read widely before they arrive. Bowman, J. H. Essential Cataloguing. London: Facet, Chambers, Sally (ed.) Catalogue 2.0: the Future of the Library Catalogue. London: Facet, Cutter, Charles Ammi. Rules for a Dictionary Catalogue. 4 th ed. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1904, available via the Internet Archive at Maxwell, Robert L.
