2 CUV50311 DIPLOMA OF GRAPHIC DESIGN COURSE OUTLINE Visual language shapes our environment. We interact with communication design constantly in our everyday lives. This nationally recognised Diploma of Graphic Design provides students with an understanding of fundamental design practices including concept development, typography, layout design and creative thinking. Students gain practical skills across the industry s leading creative software packages along with a sound knowledge of professional practice and design theory. This project-based program introduces industry processes whilst allowing individual creativity to flourish. Students gain exposure to contemporary design trends and explore the dynamics of print and digital design including packaging, publication and website development. Participants develop a folio of creative work spanning branding and identity through to digital and print layout design, photography and drawing.. This program encourages students to develop their creative skill-set in preparation for a career in the field of design. FULL-TIME STUDY The Diploma of Graphic Design can be completed in one year of full-time study. ENTRY OPTIONS There are two options for entry into the full-time and part-time programs: Beginning-of-year intake Semester 1: 22 February Mid-year intake Semester 2: 25 July WHO CAN APPLY The course is aimed at Inexperienced and experienced applicants. Mature applicants, year 12 students and students who have not completed year 12 are encouraged to apply. An ATAR is not required. CAREER OPTIONS Students can work in a range of places, including advertising agencies, design studios, publishing houses, pre-press and quick press firms, You will also be equipped to set up your own design business or work in a freelance capacity.. You will graduate with a strong design portfolio and an in-depth understanding of the complete Adobe Creative Suite. Students can also go onto further study at an Advanced Diploma level or university Degree, Masters or PHD. 2

With a month break mid year Orientation: during week of Feb 15 Semester 1: Feb 22 to Jun 17 Semester 2: Jul 25 to Nov 25 PATHWAYS AND CREDIT Pathways include entry into the Australian Catholic University (ACU) in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Queensland. ACU and will give course credit of 1 semeter towards their Bachelor of Graphic Desgn degree. Australian universities recognise study at Latrobe College. 4 STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES NEW YORK & VENICE BIENNALE TOURS Each year students have the opportunity to complete a short intensive drawing program in either New York or Venice during the International Venice Biennale. Students are able to gain course credit for these programs. Students will visit leading art galleries, museums, and principle significant sites within each city. On return to Australia students participate in an exhibition of work made during the program. Programs: 2016 New York City 19 Sep - 29 Oct 2017 Venice Biennale 25 Sep - 6 Oct Dates are during the mid semester break. INTERNSHIPS & WORK EXPERIENCE Latrobe College has fostered relationships with renowned local design studios who offer internship and work experience opportunities to passionate students. LATROBE COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN Latrobe College of Art and Design is an independent college and key provider of specialist courses in art, design and digital media. 5 SUBJECT DESCRIPTIONS COMMUNICATION DESIGN This subject introduces students to design principles including colour, hierarchy, balance and alignment. Emphasis is placed on the use of symbolic language and archetypes to build effective communication through strong visual narratives. Tutorials, projects and in-class exercises facilitate a thorough understanding of communication design basics. Typography is a language unique to communication design and in this subject, students gain typesetting skills along with a passion for the rich history and technical artistry of type. Students are encouraged to build a sound tool kit for effective use of type as a fundamental aspect of design. MULTIMEDIA IMAGING & GRAPHICS A comprehensive introduction to Adobe Creative Suite. This subject focuses on Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign the leading creative software packages across the design, art, photography and publishing industries. Through projects and tutorials, students build a solid tool kit for use in designing outcomes of a professional standard. The course includes the digital imaging of photographs and artworks, effective file management for print and web, logo design, type and publication layout. Students produce a body of creative work to contemporary design standards. CONCEPT & IDENTITY This subject is designed to aid creative outcomes and develop professional visual communication skills. Students explore creative thinking techniques and apply knowledge to create effective branding through a series of tailored design briefs. Branding and identity design are core disciplines in creative industry. Students learn what it takes to create a successful client focused brand that effectively communicates with a target audience. Creative projects range from identity application and collateral design to exploring the complexities of re-branding a business. encouraging confidence with different materials. This subject encourages versatile manipulation of the design space. Students will also draw from a professional life model. Materials may include wet and dry media, biro, charcoal, graphite, chalk pastel, ink, collage, paint, digital image and photography. WEB DESIGN Web design is constantly evolving. It is now essential that communication designers have an understanding of how design translates to a web environment. In this subject students gain a basic understanding of HTML, CSS and responsive web design along with CMS and SEO principles. A rich variety of case studies are investigated with a view to identifying what works well and what makes life difficult for the user in the ever-growing arena of web. Through exposure to the latest web trends and with step-by-step guidance, students have the opportunity to design and build sites to a professional standard. PHOTOGRAPHY A This fundamental exploration of photography provides students with knowledge in camera usage, image capture and digital manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. Conceptual approaches to photography are explored and students are encouraged to develop unique creative responses to a variety of photographic conditions. DRAWING & MIXED MEDIA In this subject students explore fundamental and expanded methods of drawing. Centred on developing observational skills, representational form and 5

6 SUBJECT DESCRIPTIONS Cont PACKAGING & PUBLICATION This subject explores the print-based disciplines of design industry. Students gain skills in publication design utilising grid layouts, typesetting and design principles to create dynamic compositions. Contemporary case studies are drawn on for inspiration and inform unique project outcomes ranging from magazine layouts to collateral design. The fundamental aspects of packaging design are explored through creative project work and backed up with tutorials centred on contemporary printing methods. Students learn how to translate creative concepts into professional 3D packaging outcomes. PHOTOGRAPHY B In this subject a range of DSLR finishing techniques are explored using Adobe Photoshop and other video and image capture programs. Critical appraisal of trends in contemporary photographic art is undertaken through a series of lectures, workshops and site visits to exhibitions of sound, video, installation and interactive art. Participants create photographic and/or video works and investigate installation or interactive online projects. DESIGN THEORY This subject gives students the opportunity to engage with the dynamic scope of contemporary design theory and historical design movements. Students gain a strong foundation on which to build their own unique visual language and make informed decisions in creative environments. With a strong focus on professional practice, students gain exposure to briefing and consultation processes, along with insights into creative studio management. Case studies and design trends are explored via current local and international design studios and campaigns. STUDIO ART Students learn how to further explore and develop their creative work initiated within the program. They will use alternative materials and techniques to discover more effective ways to communicate their ideas. Through the use of scale, creative display installation methods, students discover how to contextualise their work in different environments. Design is about capturing attention and can take many forms. This subject teaches students how to open up further ideas for more developed and refined future projects. Students work in a variety of methods including photography, drawing, digital image, painting, 3D or more. This is a key subject for any student developing folio work to go to design at university level. 6

This may include drawings, paintings, design work, photography or anything else that a student has. The college views the student work as evidence of their creative engagement rather than a measure of development. The college wants to make sure the course matches student expectations. The college will reply to your application with an Information Kit about the course and living in Melbourne. Students will need 5.5 IELTS test score for English or equivalent if English is their second language. This may be completed after the application process or before the student begins their course. The college will send successful applicants a Letter of Offer and issue a COE (Certificate Of Enrolment) to the student once the college receives the signed Acceptance Agreement Form (attached to the Letter of Offer) and a deposit or part or full payment of fees. He has lectured in Design at various institutions including RMIT. Leon s work spans multiple disciplines including brand identity, web design, print collateral and sound design. He has been invited to speak at events including Melbourne s State of Design Festival, the Museum of Victoria s Top Design series and the Australian Graphic Design Association s First 5 Out lecture series. He has been the recipient of the Linden Postcard Award, Friends of VCA Award, and the Most Innovative and Best Interpreted Awards from MUDfest. He has exhibited work throughout Australia, New York and the UK and his work is represented in private collections internationally. Most recently his work in the Melbourne Now exhibition at the NGV. HONOR BRADBEER Drawing Studied at L Accademia Italiana, Florence; SangMyung University, Seoul, 2001; Fine Art BA, RMIT, 2003; MFA, RMIT, Honor Bradbeer has exhibited in Melbourne, Sydney and Hong Kong. Her work is featured in The National Gallery of Australia s printmaking collection and also in private collections throughout Australia, Europe the UK and the USA. JANE COCKS Studio Art BA (Fine Art) Prahran College, 1979; Post Graduate VCA, 1983; MFA (Research) RMIT, Jane Cocks is the Head of Art at Latrobe College. For over twenty-five years she has tutored and lectured at various institutions including VCA, RMIT, Monash, CSU (NSW) and ANU (Canberra). She was acting Head of Drawing at VCA and has worked as an outside assessor for MA students at Monash Uni and VCA. Jane s work is included in private and public collections throughout Europe, Argentina and Australia, including the NGV. She has been a recipient of the Dame Elizabeth Murdoch Travelling Fellowship and Australia Council Awards including residencies in Paris and New York City. 8
