1 Goal #1: To produce OU graduates who demonstrate critical thinking in their writing Objective: Facilitate training in the Paul Elder model for all faculty Student Learning Faculty will be provided professional development training in order to teach ad assess critical thinking through writing skills. As a result students will be able to demonstrate the ability to identify, articulate, and evaluate the source, context, quality and credibility of information in order to create products and make decisions. Faculty will be provided annual training at the Colloquium by Paul Elder thereby developing the knowledge base of Paul Elder Model on critical thinking. 2 Goal #2: To produce OU graduates who demonstrate critical thinking in their writing Objective: Establish staffed resource center for Critical Thinking Outcome/Impact on Student Learning: Establish staffed and resource supported center to Improve Faculty Approaches in Teaching Critical Thinking Skills As a result students will be able to demonstrate the ability to identify, : Identify location within Cunningham Hall to locate support center for critical thinking Partner with OU writing lab Identify and fund staff to operate center for critical thinking Identify and fund resources necessary for operating center for critical thinking All faculty QEP staff x2 QEP Director/Administrati on One year

4 Goal #3: To produce OU graduates who demonstrate critical thinking in their writing Objective: Facilitate faculty use of instructional skills that develop student s critical thinking Outcome/Impact on Student Learning: Faculty will demonstrate an awareness and use of professional development opportunities to develop approaches and enhance critical thinking skills. As a result students will be Critical Thinking Skills Faculty Workshops. /presentations highlighting effective approaches for teaching critical thinking/writing skills. All faculty QEP Director/QEP Staff Two presentations per year

6 Goal #4 To produce OU graduates who demonstrate critical thinking in their writing Objective: Establish one trainer per department Student Learning: Consistent departmental training that will highlight effective methods for designing and selecting curricula and curriculum materials thereby impacting student learning outcome consistently there by improving student s ability to demonstrate the ability to identify, articulate, and evaluate the source, context, quality and credibility of information in order to create products and make decisions. 7 Goal #5 To produce OU graduates who demonstrate critical thinking in their writing Objective: Freshman through seniors will demonstrate critical thinking through composition, Student Learning The ability to identify, articulate, and evaluate the source, context, quality, and credibility of information in order to create products and make decisions. : : EN 112 Freshman Composition: Topics chosen for the one otwo research papers required in this class will all demand critical thinking skills. Through the research papers, : Freshman students. Responsible Units: English faculty. : This activity will occur during the fall and spring semesters each academic, beginning in the spring semester of the second year of implementation of the QEP.

9 Goal #6: To produce OU graduates who demonstrate critical thinking in their writing Objective: To embed critical thinking skills in coursework within general education coursework, both lower and level division levels. Outcome/Impact on Student Learning : Students who complete an Oakwood University degree will demonstrate in their written work the ability to reflect upon, assess, and respond to the assumptions underlying their own ideas and actions and those of others. : EN 111 Freshman Composition: Diagnostic pre- and post- essay testing at the beginning and end of the semester will assess the progress made through the semester. During the semester, at least three critical thinking essays will be assigned. English Proficiency Examination: This examination, a graduation requirement administered during the student s junior year, will include a four-to-five-hundred word essay that requires critical thinking. Students who do not pass the exam after two attempts will be required to pass EN 250 in which the assessment is the same as in the Proficiency Exam. EN 201, EN 301, EN 302, EN 211, EN 212, EN 221 literature classes available to fulfill the onesemester literature requirement of every Oakwood student: In each class there will be a minimum of two essays requiring students to : All students Responsible Units: English faculty. : This activity will occur during the fall and spring semesters each academic year, beginning in the second year of implementation of the QEP.
