1 Who is Aurora? An Overview of demographic and social data and trends Supplement A: City of Aurora Planning and Development Services December 2010 City of Aurora Planning & Development Services Department September, 2012

2 Primary and Secondary in Aurora Primary and secondary students in Aurora are primarily served by two school districts: the Adams-Arapahoe 28J School District, more commonly known as the Aurora Public Schools (APS), and the Cherry Creek School District (CCSD). APS is the sixth largest school district in Colorado and the fall, 2011 enrollment was 39,696 students. Students attending the 55 schools come from more than 135 countries and speak 115 different languages. As one of the more diverse school districts in Colorado, the school s administration has emphasized the rich cultural learning environment that this diversity offers. There are also private schools in Aurora, such as Regis Jesuit High School and on-line schools with satellite offices. There are a small number of students living in the southern portion of the city that attend Douglas County schools, and also some students living in the eastern part of the city may attend schools in the Bennett School District. CCSD is the fourth largest school district in Colorado and had a student enrollment of 52,589 in the fall of The district boundaries include portions of Aurora, Centennial, Greenwood Village, unincorporated Arapahoe County and some smaller towns. Both school districts have grown considerably in the past decade. The APS student enrollment grew almost 26 percent between 2001 and fall, 2011 and the CCSD enrollment grew almost 19 percent for the same 10 year period. Figure 1 identifies the percentage of minority race students in the school districts in Aurora and the surrounding areas. School districts in Colorado tabulate enrollment ethnicity according to the following classification: American Indian, Asian, Black, Hispanic, White, Native Hawaiian, and two or more races. APS, Denver Public Schools and Adams County have the larger percentages of minority students as compared to the Cherry Creek, Douglas County and Bennett School Districts. For APS, the fall, 2011 Race/ethnicity enrollment was 78.8 percent, with the pupil membership described as: Native American: 0.7 percent Asian: 4.4 percent Black: percent Hispanic: percent White: percent Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander: 0.45 percent Two or More Races: 3.54 percent 1 The Hispanic student enrollment of percent is comparable to that of the Denver Public School District. For the current school year, 46 percent of the students in APS are second language students, of which 86 percent are Spanish speakers. 1 Race/Ethnicity information from Colorado Department of, 2011 Pupil Membership by County 2 Who is Aurora?

4 According to the CCSD s counts, 10 percent of the students are English language learners. For the 2011 school year, percent of the CCSD student population was Hispanic, percent was Black, 8.12 percent was Asian, percent was White, and 4.52 was two or more races. 1 High School Rates in Aurora The Colorado Department of defines high school graduation rates as the percentage of students from which an end of year 8th grade cohort, adjusted for verified transfers in and out with adequate documentation, who leave school as graduates as defined by the school district in four years or less. The statewide four-year ontime graduation rate for the class of 2011 was 73.9 percent. Among race/ethnic groups, the on-time graduation rate for 2011 was 52.2 percent for American Indians, 81.7 percent for Asian students, 64.6 percent for Black or African American students, 60.1 percent for Hispanic students, and 81.1 percent for White students. Figure 2 presents the graduation rates by high school and school district. The on-time graduation rate for the class of 2011 for the APS schools was 48.5 percent and for the CCSD schools in Aurora, it was 84.1 percent. The graduation rates at the CCSD schools ranged from about 78 percent to 87 percent. The graduation rates for the APS schools were lower, ranging from 43 percent at Aurora Central to 67.9 percent at Rangeview High School. It should be noted that the New America School is a charter school located adjacent to the Lowry Campus and the William Smith High School is an art and technology pilot school. Both these schools are fairly new school programs. 6 Figure 3 presents the graduation rates for Aurora high schools in 2000 and rates declined for this time period, and at some schools there has been a distinct decline. APS has implemented a Fifth Block program, an extension of the school year by 23 days to provide approximately 3,700 students in 2011 with additional educational support. In addition, the district has recently launched the VISTA 2015 plan with the goal to graduate every student with the skills to go to college. Another consideration to evaluate educational attainment is to monitor the dropout rate over time. The dropout rate is an annual rate, reflecting the percentage of students enrolled in grades 7 through 12 who leave school and do not attend another educational program or school. Expelled students are not included in the dropout rate. The school year dropout rate for Colorado was 3 percent. The dropout rate for APS was 6.4 percent. The drop-out rate for CCSD was 1.7 percent. Reduced and Free Lunch Program in Aurora For the 2011 and 2012 school year, approximately 69 percent (25,088) of the APS students were eligible to receive free and reduced lunches. Approximately 61 percent of the students were eligible to receive free lunches and this percentage is distributed fairly uniformly from kindergarten to 12th grade. A little over 8 percent of the students were eligible for reduced price lunches. At the CCSD schools, approximately 26 percent of the students were eligible for free or reduced lunch (19 percent for free lunch and 6 percent for reduced price lunch). Figure 4 illustrates the geographic distribution of the APS schools with the highest percentage of students eligible to receive free and reduced price lunches. 6 Who is Aurora?
