Truly amazing. I could not have asked for a better outcome. I Could Not Have Asked for a Better Outcome - Roy Roy underwent heart bypass surgery at the Mercy Heart & Vascular Center, and just four weeks later, he was enjoying one of his favorite hobbies, ice fishing. A major factor in his rapid recovery was the fact that his surgery was performed robotically. His surgeon used the da Vinci Surgical Robot to perform the procedure. Roy s surgery went smoothly, and he was thrilled with his care. It was like the hospital staff couldn t do enough for me, he said. The nurses watched over me like a mother would her child. Roy was grateful that he was able to undergo heart bypass surgery and get back to his normal activities so quickly. I had a follow-up appointment with Dr. Kabour (Ameer Kabour, M.D., FACC, FSCAI, Cardiologist), and he told me I could increase the two miles a day I was walking on the treadmill up to four miles and also suggested I try an aerobics class! The most amazing part of it was that they could do all that to me and in such a short time. It was truly amazing. I could not have asked for a better outcome. 4 A Message from Andrea R. Price At the core of Mercy s mission is the firm belief that healthier people contribute to healthier, stronger and more prosperous communities. Everything we do is focused on improving the health of all of the communities we serve across Northwest Ohio. Clearly there is much work to be done. The 2011 Lucas County Health Assessment Project revealed that 34 percent of all Lucas County adults have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, 27 percent have high blood cholesterol, and 35 percent were obese, three known risk factors for heart disease and stroke. In recent years, heart disease and stroke have accounted for 34 percent of all Lucas County adult deaths With these disturbing statistics in mind, Mercy has targeted awareness programs, cardiac services and advanced technology to reduce the deadly impact of heart disease and stroke in Northwest Ohio. In this report, you will learn about the exceptional cardiac care that is offered at Mercy facilities across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Mercy has a long tradition of providing excellent cardiac and vascular services. Each day, the work of our physicians, nurses, technicians and staff serves to build on an already strong foundation of respect and recognition. I am proud of the standards we set for ourselves. They are high, and getting higher. We are always looking for innovative ways to serve our patients and our communities. Andrea R. Price, FACHE President & Chief Executive Officer, Mercy Mercy Cardiac and vascular Services Report to the community 5

A Message from Kevin Cook Healthcare is changing so rapidly that it is even challenging for those of us who are immersed in the industry each day to stay informed. Legislative reform is just one of the reasons healthcare is changing. On top of the new laws and confusing political wrangling is the ever-evolving level of expectation on the part of healthcare consumers our patients. Yes, we live in interesting times. At Mercy, however, we are able to view all of this tumult with a comforting bit of reality. No matter what happens, no matter what changes, one thing will always remain the same. Mercy s mission has served as our true north since For more than 155 years, the simple and elegant words that call upon us to extend the healing ministry of Jesus in the communities we serve, especially to the poor and underserved, have remained the same. This report provides the highlights of a key element in the fulfillment of Mercy s mission cardiac and vascular care. Mercy has a long and respected record of providing the best heart care in the region. This report documents how our organization continues to strengthen its commitment to healing the hearts of our patients. The laws may change. Economies ebb and flow. However, Mercy and our thousands of doctors, nurses and staff members across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan remain steadfast and committed to providing the cardiac and vascular care that our patients truly deserve. Kevin Cook Metro CEO, Mercy and President & CEO, Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Home of the Regional Heart and Vascular Center. Mercy Cardiac and vascular Services Report to the community 7

A Message from Ameer Kabour, M.D., FACC, FSCAI The name Mercy has long been associated with the best cardiac care in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. This report represents a snapshot of the breadth and depth of Mercy s respected heart and vascular services. Its purpose is to give you a sense for the level of commitment we demonstrate each day to the patients who come to us for care. While the Mercy system provides the facilities, structure, organization and technology that supports our legacy of leading-edge care, it is the commitment of the physicians, nurses, technicians and staff that has formed its foundation. Each day they demonstrate an unwavering commitment to caring and compassion. Mercy is a progressive system that is focused on maintaining its leadership in a rapidly changing healthcare industry. The organization s willingness to embrace innovation is characterized by the partnerships it has forged with physicians. The healthcare landscape is changing rapidly. I, along with my physician colleagues, am proud to be associated with a strong organization that continues to demonstrate enthusiasm for new and innovative frameworks for improving the services to its patients. Ameer Kabour, M.D., FACC, FSCAI, Cardiologist Chief of Cardiology, Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center President & CEO, Toledo Cardiology Consultants, Inc. President, Cardiovascular Physicians Management, LLC President, Cardiovascular Research Center, LLC President, Midwest Modern Imaging, LLC President, Mobile Cardiac Imaging, LLC Mercy Cardiac and vascular Services Report to the community 9

An Introduction to Mercy Cardiac and Vascular Services For decades, Mercy has been Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan s respected leader in cardiac and vascular care. Today, we continue our legacy of leadership by pioneering the innovative and advanced methods for care detailed throughout this report. In these pages, you will clearly see why our efforts have been recognized by the following national publications and rating systems: U.S. News and World Report awarded us with a high performing rating for our heart and heart surgery services. The Leapfrog Group, a national healthcare consumer advocacy organization, gave Mercy St. Vincent a better than average clinical outcome rating for both heart bypass surgery and aortic valve replacement as compared to other hospitals in Ohio and nationwide. HealthGrades, the leading independent health care ratings agency, gave a best survival rating for Mercy Heart & Vascular Center heart failure patients. Our cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and heart and vascular center staff are able to get heart attack patients rapid, nationally recommended care as an accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI from Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC). Mercy is preferred 2 to 1 for cardiac services by consumers.* *(AZG Research 2010 Hospital Comparative Research 2010) Results of studies conducted at Mercy Heart & Vascular Center have been published in the Journal of American Cardiology, New England Journal of Medicine, and Endovascular. 9 Mercy has participated in the AngelMed trial since it began in This trial represents advanced technology that could help detect heart attacks that do not have typical symptoms. It senses EKG changes in the heart and helps the patient know when it may be time to go to the emergency room. Ameer Kabour, M.D., FACC, FSCAI, Cardiologist Mercy s strong team of experienced cardiologists routinely introduces new non-surgical cardiac solutions and uses innovative techniques to repair damaged blood vessels. Using leading-edge cardiac technology, our staff is able to rapidly diagnose and treat heart and blood vessel blockages with cardiac catheterization techniques including angioplasty, atherectomy, and stent implantation. Under the direction of Ameer Kabour, M.D., FACC, FSCAI, Chief of Cardiology for Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Mercy is always researching and pioneering new ways to repair the heart. More than 30 studies have been conducted in the last two years. Studies have included: New stents, including absorbable stents New devices, including Alert devices New medications Focus on Cardiology Services Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center was the first in the area to perform the HYBRID procedure, which combines a single bypass (using the mammary artery) with a stent to other blockages to achieve shorter recovery and better long term outcomes. For the first time in the region, an AngelMed Guardian cardiac monitor device was implanted in one of Dr. Kabour s patients, a 63-year-old man. The device, implanted in a manner similar to a pacemaker, is designed to help patients know when a heart attack may be imminent. Mercy Cardiac and vascular Services Report to the community 15

At Mercy Willard we re able to offer very intimate personalized care to patients; we know our patients well. But, the advantage of being part of the Mercy system is that I have access to leading-edge technology. I am able to work with surgeons who are at the forefront of cardiothoracic surgery and with specialists in other areas. I have access to medical care that s world renowned. Gregory Vigesaa, M.D., Cardiologist, Mercy Willard Hospital Mercy Heart & Vascular Center is one of only 20 centers in the nation to receive the new absorbable cardiac stent. This stent provides the patient all the benefits of a conventional stent, but dissolves in approximately four weeks. Mercy has also been selected to receive the new percutaneous valve, which is inserted through the patient s groin and clipped to his or her existing valve without the use of surgery or robotics. Mercy St. Vincent has achieved 100-percent Door to Balloon interventional heart attack treatments, the best response in the region. Focus on Cardiology Services Mercy St. Vincent was the also the first hospital in the region to utilize the LARIA atrial appendage closure sutures for Atrial Fibrillation patients to stop using blood thinner for high risk patients. Mercy s leading-edge cardiology services extend deep into the rural areas of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan (Willard, Tiffin, Defiance, Monroe), where specially trained cardiologists, in close collaboration with their colleagues across the system, provide state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment. 11 I began performing robotic lobectomies at Mercy in February of The smaller incision offers the patient less pain and a faster postoperative recovery. This procedure is a wonderful option for people with earlyphase lung cancer. Jim Burdine, M.D., FACS, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates Focus on Cardiothoracic Services Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates practice encompasses several specialty areas including aortic surgery, cardiac arrhythmia surgery, minimally invasive and robotic coronary and valvular surgery, and lung resection. Our surgeons work closely with primary care doctors and specialists to ensure the best possible care before, during, and after the surgical procedure is performed. Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center is the only hospital in our region offering robotic lobectomies to treat lung cancer and is the only local facility performing minimally invasive and totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB/ TECAB) on a regular basis. Mercy Cardiac and vascular Services Report to the community 19

We have done about 50 of these procedures... It allows us to perform coronary artery bypass grafting without a sternotomy. MID/TECAB offers faster healing and return to normal activity, less time off of work and less pain. It also eliminates the risk of infection in the sternum. Fayyaz Hashmi, M.D., FACS Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates Robotic lobectomy Most stage I and stage II, non-small cell lung cancers are treated surgically with a lobectomy. While surgical resection offers the best chance of a cure for those with early-stage lung cancer, the traditional thoracotomy approach typically requires a weeklong hospital stay and extended recovery at home. The da Vinci Surgical Robot, used in Thoracic Surgery at Mercy since 2009, offers a minimally invasive alternative, with no need to open the chest. Focus on Robotic Services Robotic-assisted and totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass (MID/TECAB). Direct and totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass (MID/TECAB) provide the least invasive approaches to performing a coronary artery bypass. The bypass graft is performed through small incisions. As a result, the surgical trauma, pain and scarring for the patient are very minimal. Mercy Cardiac and vascular Services Report to the community 21

We think the Mercy system is fantastic and our experience proves that Mercy is the hospital of choice for robotic heart surgery. We can t thank them enough for all they ve done for us. - Pauline Mercy is the Hospital of Choice for Robotic Surgery Pauline was enjoying a trip to Las Vegas with her sons when she began experiencing back pain. Not wanting to cause any alarm, she didn t mention anything to her son, Ike, until the next morning. We took her to a local hospital and discovered she had a heart attack, said Ike. The Las Vegas hospital staff recommended that they meet with a cardiologist after returning home to Ohio. We saw Dr. Vigesaa at Mercy Willard Hospital who did follow-up tests to determine Mom s next steps. Pauline appreciated Dr. Vigesaa s insight and down-to-earth approach. He put it in plain English, which was really helpful for someone like me who is not technical. It really helped reduce my anxiety, said Pauline. Pauline was transported by Life Flight air ambulance to Mercy St. Vincent s where she underwent robotic open heart surgery. Pauline was discharged just five days after being admitted for the surgery. If I knew anyone who needed cardiac care I d recommend they go to a specialist and go to Mercy, said Pauline. Mercy Cardiac and vascular Services Report to the community 23

The Mercy Heart & Vascular Center is a statewide leader in minimally invasive endovascular techniques. We have excellent limb salvage rates in critical patients. We are the only center regionally using the advanced imaging of the Heart & Vascular Center catheterization labs to perform complex aneurysm repairs. Gregory Kasper, M.D., Vascular Surgeon Chief of Staff, Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center Minimally invasive endovascular techniques have radically changed the approach to Vascular Surgery at the Mercy Heart & Vascular Center. Today s endovascular procedures offer significant advantages over traditional open surgery, smaller incisions, less stress on the heart and reduced risks for patients with coronary artery disease or kidney or lung issues. In addition to increased comfort for the patient, minimally invasive procedures result in shorter recovery time, less anesthesia and a reduced need for blood transfusions. The state-of-the-art catheterization labs in the Mercy Heart & Vascular Center now permit surgeons to perform much less invasive Aortic Stent Grafting procedures percutaneously. Most patients are discharged the day after the procedure and are back to their normal lives in two weeks. Prior to this approach, traditional open procedures meant a seven to 10 day hospital stay for surgery patients. Mercy s Vascular Surgeons are dramatically reducing the chances of losing a limb for their patients with Focus on Vascular Services Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) by using minimally invasive revascularization procedures. With the innovative JETSTREAM revascularization catheter, surgeons can clear blockages, restore blood flow and more effectively treat PAD. The procedures are performed in an outpatient setting, under local anesthetic, which results in faster recovery times and fewer complications. Mercy serves as a national training site for the JETSTREAM system. Mercy Cardiac and vascular Services Report to the community 25

At the new Low Risk Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Mercy Tiffin Hospital, we are now able to offer patients access to cardiac and vascular diagnostic procedures. Before this facility opened, Mercy patients had to travel over an hour to Toledo. However, as part of the Mercy system, I know that for patients who need a higher level of care, I have access to the full cardiac resources in Toledo. Steven Bruhl, M.D., M.S., FACC Mercy Tiffin Hospital Post-operative care Mercy s cardiothoracic surgeons recognize the importance of follow-up visits after a procedure. To minimize travel time for patients in outlying areas, surgeons routinely schedule follow-up appointments at locations close to the patient s home. Surgeons travel to Mercy Tiffin Hospital and all of our hospitals in Toledo and Oregon to see patients post-operatively. Follow-Up Care Programs Cardiac Rehabilitation A focus on exercise and good nutrition will help patients strengthen their heart and improve their health. Many recovering heart patients don t know how to exercise or eat properly. Mercy s proven cardiac rehabilitation program can help. We provide medically supervised cardiac rehabilitation programs tailored to meet the individual needs of patients. Patients enrolled in our programs traditionally greatly improve their recovery time. 16 St. V s has a reputation with everyone I know for being the No. 1 heart hospital around - this is the only place I would have come for my bypass surgery... I would highly recommend St. V s and Dr. Hashmi. They gave me a new lease on life! - Kevin Kevin Gets a New Lease on Life. Kevin chalked his fatigue up to old age, but during a physical for his work a doctor suggested a stress test. Results of that test led a heart catheterization, which indicated serious blockages around his heart. Kevin was referred to the Mercy Heart & Vascular Center. Mercy cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Fayyaz Hashmi performed a quadruple bypass. The no bleed, off-pump procedure impressed Kevin. The beating heart surgery meant that he was not put on a heart-lung machine during the procedure. The guy just blew me away with his intelligence, said Kevin. I felt confident with Dr. Hashmi right from the get-go. His calmness and the way he spoke to me - I really appreciated that. He seemed very concerned and I could tell that he cared. Kevin also appreciated the confident, compassionate demeanor of the staff at the Mercy Heart & Vascular Center. Everyone was smiling like you can tell they all enjoy coming to work, said Kevin. 18 If you have to face heart surgery, there s only one place to go. The doctors here are top-notch. They gave me my life back! - Gordy There s Only One Place to Go Gordy was at The Toledo Zoo with his family when he started not feeling well. Later, he went to see his cardiologist and underwent a stress test and heart catheterization, which revealed he was going to need heart surgery. A bypass procedure was scheduled for the following week. Gordy admits to being a little anxious about the surgery, but his anxiety was immediately relieved upon meeting his Mercy cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Jim Burdine. He came into my room as I was getting prepped for surgery and the very first thing he said was Gordy, you re not going to die today. That made me feel better! said Gordy Reflecting on his experience, Gordy says, Everything was perfect and the staff here is exceptional. My nurses were great and the doctors were phenomenal. They all honestly care for you as a patient; they are concerned about how you feel. Mercy Cardiac and vascular Services Report to the community 33
