4 Graduation Requirements Cohort 2017 students need the following: 4 years of English 4 years of Math 4 years of Social Studies 4 years of Science 2 years of Foreign Language 1 year of Fine Arts credit (Art, Band, Orchestra, Floral Design, Dance, Choir) 1 year PE ½ year Health ½ year Communication Applications 5 credits of state electives Total of 26 credits needed to graduate!

5 Distinguished Graduation Plan Cohort 2017 students can graduate on a Distinguished Graduation Plan if they meet the following criteria: Must complete three years of the same foreign language Must earn 4 advanced measures, which include: AP Test Scores- must earn a score of 3 or higher Dual Credit/College courses- must earn an 80% or better National Merit commended student or higher Must earn 26 credits Must complete and turn in application during senior year

6 STAAR Exam Requirements Students must pass the following STAAR/EOC exams in order to graduate: English 1 English 2 Algebra I Biology US History

7 GPA=Grade Point Average GPA and Class Rank Your GPA is based on the classes you take and the grades you make in those classes. Grade Range Letter Semester Grade AP/DC Core PreAP/Honors Level and All Other Courses A B C D Below 70 F Class Rank is based on a student s weighted GPA. Colleges look at both GPA and Class Rank!

8 Academic Transcript Your transcript will include every class you take in high school. Junior high courses taken for high school credit also appear on your transcript. Your semester grades appear on your transcript. Every semester grade you earn at high school counts! It is part of your permanent academic record. Unofficial transcripts can be requested from your student s counselor. Official transcripts must be requested through Naviance/Family Connection.

Take advanced courses to help boost your GPA and Class Rank Start Exploring Colleges or Post Secondary options Develop a list of potential colleges College Visits Volunteer/Community Service Track hours Parents need to start allowing your students to start advocating for themselves (you won t be there to help them in college) Take the ACT/SAT in the Spring of your Junior year!

13 DUAL CREDIT Dual Credit classes are offered at ORHS or Lone Star College for students to get college as well as high school credit. Most credits transfer to Texas Public Universities and many universities outside of Texas. Always research the colleges you are interested in to make sure credit will transfer. Student can take 2 Dual Credit classes at ORHS each semester. There are also DC classes that can be taken at Lone Star. Please see the Program of Studies for a list of those classes.

14 DC College Algebra for rising 12th Students will receive credit for College Algebra Honors in fall and DC College Algebra in spring at ORHS Students will receive 3 credit hours at LSC (Math 1314) Grades for the fall are on 5 point GPA scale and for the spring are on 6 point GPA scale Class costs approximately $66 for spring semester and tuition will be collected for this course in November of A student who took DC English or DC US History their junior year will need to meet TSI readiness standards in Math only Students may qualify for DC College Algebra with the following scores: SAT: 500 math & combined critical reading and math score of a 1070 ACT: 19 math & a composite score of 23 Students will need to take TSI college readiness test if they do not qualify with the above scores

16 Junior Year Timeline for College & Career All Year Take rigorous classes and do your best! Research colleges. You get 2 College Visit days this year. Attempt to narrow your list of schools to about 5 by the end of this school year. Work on your resume in Naviance. Attend College and Career Center events. Fall or Spring Make an appointment with your Grade Level Counselor to review your transcript and make sure you are on track for graduation. Spring Choose courses for your senior year wisely. Continue to take strong, rigorous courses. Take your SAT and/or ACT (more info. on following slides). Consider completing a summer enrichment program (look for details on Naviance in the spring). Register with NCAA Eligibility Center if you plan on pursuing sports in college. Talk to Mrs. Prejean or Coach Goodwin for more information.

17 College Visit Days Attendance Information for College Visits You get 2 CV days for 11 th grade. This is a great way for you to visit an actual college campus and take an official tour with the college s admissions department.

19 SAT and ACT The SAT and ACT are college admissions tests. If you plan on attending a four-year university, you need to take one or both of these tests. Register to take one or both of these tests in the spring. Check out the Conroe ISD Test Prep sessions for help in preparing for these tests. ORHS School Code:

22 College Admissions Apply Texas This is the application for your Texas public universities and many private and two-year schools. You can go to this website and view an example application so you know what to expect next year.

23 College Admissions The Common Application Can be used for many private schools and schools outside of Texas

24 Naviance Log in to your Naviance account frequently. Stop by the College and Career Center (CCC) in Room B202 if you need help logging in to your account. Please make sure that you are using an address that you check regularly. The CCC will post information about scholarships and college visits in Naviance. Begin working on your resume in Naviance. If you are a new student, stop by the CCC to get your Naviance account information.

25 Naviance Tasks 1. Research colleges using the colleges tab. 2. Complete the Do What You Are assessment. 3. Complete the Career Interest Profiler. The Do What You Are assessment and Career Interest Profiler will give you valuable information in helping you research possible careers/college majors.

27 College Visits to ORHS Throughout the school year, we will have representatives from colleges here at ORHS to meet with you and answer questions you might have about that school. Colleges will visit ORHS during Eagles Nest and/or lunches. You MUST sign up to attend a college visit during Eagles Nest. The next slide will give you instructions on how to do this.

30 Summer Enrichment Programs Consider completing a summer enrichment program next summer. Look for the enrichment programs link under the colleges tab. Many will have application deadlines in the early spring (March/April).
