5 Intrductin Lees-McRae Cllege is cmmitted t the preparatin f cmpetent and dedicated teachers and t the cntinued develpment and expansin f vigrus licensure prgrams that reflect thughtful cnsideratin f the high prfessinal and persnal standards required f teachers. At the present time, the Cllege ffers three licensure prgrams: Elementary Educatin (K-6), Special Educatin (K-12), and Theatre Arts Educatin (K-12). Each prgram f study, alng with its gals and bjectives, is utlined in the Cllege Catalg, the Office f Cntinuing and Prfessinal Educatin Cllege Catalg Supplement, and the Teacher Educatin Handbk. The Divisin f Educatin strives t prvide strng curses f study that prmte the psitive and hlistic develpment f teachers. It is expected that candidates wh cmplete the Teacher Educatin Prgram and becme licensed will be teachers wh have a well-balanced knwledge f their subject areas; a distinct knwledge f the thery and practice f teaching; a balanced sense f persnal value, integrity, and mral wrth; and an appreciatin f the multicultural natin and interdependent wrld in which they live. The Lees-McRae Cllege Divisin f Educatin fcuses n the develpment f reflective practitiners. The faculty f the Divisin f Educatin has a strng traditin f excellence in teaching. They have been selected because they are knwn fr their mdel teaching, insightful advisement, and respect fr their wn cultural experiences as well as thse f thers. 6 The Reflective Practitiner Framewrk Teachers as Reflective Practitiners The faculty f the Divisin f Educatin (in cnjunctin with ther academic prgrams) ffers a cmprehensive Teacher Educatin Prgram that prmtes the reflective practitiner framewrk and a sund prgram f study fr each licensure prgram ffered. Cmmitted t a reflective practitiner mdel as a viable educatinal cncept, faculty serve as mdel teachers, cunsel wisely, reflect deeply n all aspects f the teaching/learning interactin, and devte many hurs t advising Teacher Educatin candidates abut their cursewrk and prgress as grwing prfessinals. Many faculty members als serve as infrmal mentrs, and in this capacity devte nt nly prfessinal, but als persnal time t candidates. The Reflective Practitiner Framewrk at Lees-McRae Cllege is an effective, develpmental mdel that accmmdates pre-service preparatin and spans the inductin and inservice stages f its graduates. 8 Divisin f Educatin Prgrams f Study Overview f the Teacher Educatin Prgram The Divisin f Educatin at Lees-McRae Cllege prvides prgrams leading t Teacher Licensure in Elementary Educatin, Special Educatin, and Theatre Arts Educatin. Lees- McRae Cllege is cmmitted t a reflective practitiner framewrk that prepares thughtful, cmpetent, and dedicated teachers and t the cntinued develpment and expansin f vigrus licensure prgrams that exhibit thughtful cnsideratin f the high prfessinal and persnal standards required f teachers. These high prfessinal and persnal standards are listed as Dispsitins f Teacher Candidates (see p. 7) and are evaluated at fur benchmarks thrugh which candidates pass during the Lees-McRae Cllege Teacher Educatin Prgram. There are fur lcatins fr the LMC Elementary Educatin prgram. Each site ffers the same curses, is held t the same standards and learning utcmes and is administered by the Lees-McRae Cllege Divisin f Educatin. An n-campus prgram is cnducted n the Lees- McRae Cllege campus in Banner Elk, NC. Extended-Campus prgrams are based at the campus f Surry Cunty Cmmunity Cllege (SCC) in Dbsn, NC; at the campus f Western Piedmnt Cmmunity Cllege (WPCC) in Mrgantn, NC; and nline. All are identified by Lees-McRae Cllege as Flagship Prgrams. 10 Prfessinal Curse f Study Prgrams and Gals f the Divisin f Educatin Unless the Chair f the Divisin f Educatin grants permissin t fllw an alternate plan, it is recmmended that Educatin curses be taken sequentially as utlined in the Teacher Educatin Handbk. The learning utcmes/standards fr Elementary Educatin (K-6), Special Educatin General Curriculum, and Theatre Arts Educatin (K-12) prgrams are based n the Nrth Carlina Prfessinal Teacher Standards adpted by the Nrth Carlina Department f Public Instructin and the Nrth Carlina State Bard f Educatin. Elementary Educatin (K-6) Prgram f Study The Elementary Educatin (K-6) prgram with Teacher Licensure prepares candidates t becme teachers wh are cmpetent and dedicated, pssess high prfessinal and persnal standards, and act as reflective mentrs fr their students. The Elementary Educatin (K-6) Discipline Candidates wh cmplete the Teacher Educatin Prgram and becme licensed teachers are individuals wh have a distinct knwledge abut the practice and thery f teaching as well as a balanced sense f persnal values, integrity, and mral wrth. It is als expected that candidates wh cmplete an Elementary Educatin prgram f study and becme teachers will reflect n all aspects f the teaching/learning prcess and mentr their wn students. They will pssess the prfessinal dedicatin t wrk with students, parents, faculty, and cmmunity. Missin f the Elementary Educatin (K-6) Prgram The Elementary Educatin Prgram at Lees-McRae Cllege prvides teacher candidates the knwledge, skills, and dispsitins needed fr successful emplyment as schlteachers in the 21st Century classrm. Specific areas f emphasis include the integratin f a reflective practitiner framewrk, assessment, and technlgy applicatins. Standards fr Elementary Grades Teacher Candidates Elementary teachers prvide a fundatin fr K-6 students t becme lifelng learners and critical thinkers wh can successfully functin, cmpete, and flurish in a glbal sciety. Therefre, effective 21 st century elementary educatin teacher candidates must pssess an verarching understanding and knwledge f the key cncepts which drive all cntent instructin. These key cncepts, cnnected with ther cre standards, include candidates knwledge f assessment and instructin, the nature f the learner, schl gvernance and culture, theries f learning and develpment, critical use f technlgy and the understanding f hw the arts affect and interact with all ther cntent areas. The elementary teacher candidate must understand the integrative and cmplex relatinship between the fllwing key cncepts: Assessment and Instructin Nature f the Learner Schl Gvernance and Culture Theries f Learning Critical Use f Technlgy Classrm Learning Envirnment In rder t deliver cntent effectively, elementary teacher candidates must als have a brad understanding f 21st century literacy skills. The 21st century teacher candidate defines literacy as the ability t identify, understand, interpret, create, cmmunicate and cmpute using a variety f auditry and visual frmats and cntexts. This includes, but is nt limited t, print, visual images, nline databases, internet, pdcasting, etc. It is imprtant fr teacher candidates t understand that literacy invlves a cntinuum f learning within each cntent area, which will enable individuals t achieve their gals thrugh develping and expanding their knwledge and understanding. (UNESCO - United Natins Educatinal, Scientific and Cultural Organizatin) It is critical that the 21st century teacher candidate pssess an understanding f the cntent essential t meet the bjectives f the Nrth Carlina Standard Curse f Study (NCSCS) and the elementary educatin curriculum. Elementary teacher educatin candidates must pssess a strng knwledge f the NCSCS in rder t deliver effectively the cntent assciated with the fllwing standards. Standard 1: Elementary grades teacher candidates have the knwledge and understanding f language and hw language is used t develp effective cmmunicatin in listening, speaking, viewing, reading, thinking, and writing. (Reading/Language Arts) In rder t enhance the Nrth Carlina Standard Curse f Study, 21st century reading and language arts teacher candidates knw and understand literacy prcesses t facilitate cntinuus grwth in language arts. Teacher candidates must understand that the language arts are transactive prcesses that include the learner, the text, the learning gal, and the cntext in which learning ccurs. Teacher candidates understand that literacy prcesses are integrative acrss cntent areas and instructinal mdalities. Teacher candidates must als have a brad knwledge f the fundatins f reading and have the ability t use a wide range f reading assessments that infrm instructinal decisins fr bth individual students and grups f students. Teacher candidates must have the expertise t create literate envirnments that fster reading and writing in the 21st century in their classrms and schls. Elementary teacher candidates are knwledgeable in and are able t design and implement learning tasks that invlve: A. the functin, the influence and the diversity f language. Standard 2: Elementary grades teacher candidates have the knwledge and understanding f mathematical cnventins and prcesses skills relative t: number sense, numeratin, numerical peratins, and algebraic thinking; spatial sense, measurement and gemetry; patterns, relatinships, and functins; and data analysis, prbability and statistics. In additin mathematics teacher candidates demnstrate knwledge f the cntent as represented by instructinal media and strategies, including sequencing f units and tpics, varius examples, metaphr, mdels, tasks, tls, and technlgies used. Teacher candidates understand that prblem slving, reasning, cmmunicatin, cnnectin, and representatin are integrative acrss cntent areas and instructinal mdalities. Elementary teacher candidates are knwledgeable in and are able t design and implement mathematical tasks that invlve: A. prblem slving, reasning and prf, cmmunicatin, cnnectin, and representatin. Teacher candidates must have the knwledge f inquiry based science, effective use f science prcess skills, and the imprtance f debating issues invlving science and technlgy frm a glbal perspective. B. the ability t create interdisciplinary lessns/units that integrate the cntent areas with the arts t enhance classrm instructin and student learning. The Lees-McRae Elementary Educatin (K-6) prgram prvides candidates with the knwledge, skills, and dispsitins necessary t be utstanding teachers. Chice f Bachelr f Arts r Bachelr f Science Degree The Bachelr f Arts degree requires a level f prficiency in Spanish that helps graduates better meet the needs f the diverse ppulatins they may serve. The Bachelr f Science degree requires additinal curses in math and/r science abve the cre requirements. This prvides the graduate with a strnger fundatin in math/science in rder t better prepare K-6 students t meet the needs f STEM prgrams in public schls. Accreditatin The Elementary Educatin prgram at Lees-McRae Cllege has achieved the high standards required t maintain accreditatin by the Teacher Educatin Accreditatin Cuncil (TEAC) and Nrth Carlina State Department f Public Instructin (NCDPI).
