1 ILF District 1 Conference Indiana University - South Bend Wiekamp Hall Mishawaka Ave South Bend, IN featuring keynote speaker Dr. Stephen P. Hundley Dr. Stephen P. Hundley is Chair of Computer, Information and Leadership Technology and associate professor of organizational leadership and supervision in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Dr. Hundley leads an academic department comprising 20+ full-time faculty and staff, 600+ students, two undergraduate degree programs (one in IT and one in leadership), and an interdisciplinary master s program in technology leadership. In this capacity, he is responsible for academic planning, assessment, accreditation, and continuous improvement of student learning outcomes at the program level. Dr. Hundley s background is in human resource management, and has written and been consulted widely on this topic. His recent publications include: Workforce Engagement: Strategies to Attract, Motivate, and Retain Talent (2007), Employee Engagement Fundamentals: A Guide for Managers and Supervisors (2008), and Adult Learners in Higher Education: A Guide for Colleges and Universities (2010). He holds a Ph.D. from American University in Washington, D.C. and is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources by the Society for Human Resource Management. The concepts of governance versus management will be introduced along with a discussion of the dynamics and occasional tensions that can occur between directors and trustees. Audience interaction is an important component and we will be using both example situations as well as personal situations suggested by the attendees. Finally, if time permits, and introduction to some communication tools that can help directors and trustees will be shown. This session will be based on a consultation held in Washington, DC last summer organized by ALA s Office for Intellectual Freedom and Washington Office and sponsored by Google, Inc. Archer will review the current state of Internet filtering, including studies of its effectiveness, legal misunderstandings of CIPA s requirements, the reality of mission creep, applicable court cases and possible alternatives. Presenter(s): Doug Archer, Reference and Peace Studies Librarian, University of Notre Dame B) Circulation Policies for a Changing Patron Base In a time of transient populations and increasing identity theft, how can libraries preserve the integrity of their database and services? Making sure your circulation policies are up to date is a critical first step. Presenter(s): David Heidt, Manager of Circulation Services, St. Joseph County Public Library C) Workplace Behavior and Etiquette: Creating and Sustaining a Professional Culture Creating and sustaining a professional culture is the goal of many organizations. This presentation defines appropriate workplace behavior and etiquette, identifies the causes for individual lapses, explains the importance of expectation setting, discusses the importance of coaching for positive results, and provides suggestions for strengthening a culture that is focused on professionalism. Is your library thinking of loaning e-readers? If yes, stop by to learn how one library got started with an e-reader checkout program. Information covered in this session includes funding for the program, acquisition of equipment and materials, gathering information on the user s experience, and what to watch out for. Presenter(s): Vincci Kwong, Coordinator of Web Services, Indiana University South Bend; Susan Thomas, Head of Collection Services, Indiana University South Bend C) Marketing Basics and Branding the Library for a Positive Experience You ve heard about branding and brand management, but what does it mean and how can it work in a library? This high energy session will help attendees gain insight as to marketing basics, a marketing plan, branding and the promise of the brand. The speaker focuses on how a library s brand positively impacts library visitors experience and how some libraries use a slogan, mascot or identifiable graphic to brand their library. Kintzele will discuss emergency responsiveness and how your organization can manage any disaster and be ready to respond.
