1 A Custom Technology Adoption Profile Commissioned By Fortinet April Firms Turn To Next- Generation Firewalls To Tackle Evolving IT Threats Introduction With the advancement of technology, IT security has become more of an important issue for enterprises. Recent breaches have shed light on the vulnerability of IT systems and the impact that data breaches can have. More and more, companies are realizing the need for improved firewall systems to protect their business functions and their data, especially as the scope of the digital threats continues to evolve. In March 2014, Fortinet commissioned Forrester Consulting to examine the changing adoption and implementation trends of next-generation firewall systems among enterprise-size companies of 1,000 or more employees in the US and Europe. This study of network security professionals evaluates security challenges and drivers for adoption of next-generation firewalls (NGFW), based on Forrester s own market data and a custom study of the same audience. Firewalls Must Evolve As IT Threats Evolve Security is a critical requirement for operating in the digital age. Enterprises must continually seek to improve their capabilities to protect their infrastructure and assets as digital threats become more sophisticated and complex. In fact, Forrester data shows that the top security challenge cited by 77% of surveyed companies is the continuously evolving and changing nature of IT threats. The secondary challenges, such as the growing complexity of IT environments and the pull on IT staff towards other tasks which take time away from security responsibilities, add to the challenge of protecting against these threats (see Figure 1).

In this model, there is no longer a trusted and untrusted interface on security devices, a trusted and an untrusted network, or trusted and untrusted users, so NGFWs will become an integral part of the discussion. 1 Within this context of Zero Trust, NGFWs are known as network segmentation gateways (SGs) and are the key to building a Zero Trust network. An SG is a concept that takes all of the features and functionality of individual, standalone security products (firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, web application firewalls, content-filtering gateways, network access control, VPN gateways, and other encryption products) and embeds them a single appliance and a NGFW is the product that takes a step towards bringing this concept to life. It is then no surprise that expanding or re-architecting infrastructure emerges as the most common driver for implementing a NGFW, with 56% of survey respondents pointing to this cause (see Figure 2). As enterprises continue to grow and expand, it will become necessary to have an efficient NGFW in place to help protect the enterprise. 3 3 standalone security controls when there is the option of an NGFW which runs multiple capabilities on single device. A close second driver for implementing an NGFW project, as identified by 54% of our custom survey respondents, is attributed to recent security breaches that people have seen in the news. Further, in Europe in particular, 50% of respondents indicated that security breaches in their own organization were a top driver for their NGFW projects. Such high figures are not surprising; most breaches are not reported, especially if the circumstances of the breach are such that an organization is not required by law to notify victims. Still, the growing number of security breach events that do get reported in the news that affect well-known companies have undoubtedly had a negative impact on customer confidence in those organizations. In turn, these events are raising serious concerns from the board and executives about their own organization s security posture, likelihood of experiencing a similar breach, and what the security team is doing to prevent such an event. In light of these recently publicized security breaches, Forrester survey data shows that in 2013, 49% of companies had added additional security and audits requirements, and 31% had allotted extra budget for breach prevention technologies. In addition, Forrester data from the last three years shows that fewer companies are choosing to do nothing in response to breaches and more companies are choosing to increase spending on breach prevention technologies than in previous years (see Figure 3). As a result of many of these changes and pressing demand, Forrester data shows that nearly two-thirds of organizations have already implemented or are planning to implement NGFWs (see Figure 4). In light of recent concerns related to security breaches and ever-evolving digital threats, this technology is clearly a critical security tool for today s enterprises. 4 4 Key Requirements For Next- Generation Firewalls Given the stated security challenges and drivers, Forrester sought to identify how NGFW projects have changed over time; specifically, whether NGFWs are still being deployed primarily for the application visibility needed to identify and control Internet-based applications (and more recently mobile device activity) or instead used to combat the evolving nature of IT threats and/or the complexity of the IT environment. Traditionally, a next-generation firewall combined stateful packet firewalls with inline intrusion prevention and applications control to create a device that both looks for threats and does access control at the same time. Today, NGFWs are built with a host of additional advanced capabilities (firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, web application firewalls, content-filtering gateways, network access control, VPN gateways, and other encryption products) but questions remain about what enterprises really want. Network security professionals in our study ranked, in priority order, stateful firewall, antivirus, advanced threat capability, SSL decryption, and authentication as their top requirements (see Figure 5). These results illustrate the concern surrounding advanced persistent threats (APTs) today. However, this also indicates that many organizations may not fully understand the advantages of app control and IPS at Layer 7 to help combat modern malware and malware toolkits, where all malware is essentially a zero day. Regardless, a shift in drivers and requirements has occurred from the initial days of NGFW, as organizations demand additional requirements beyond basic application visibility. 5 5 Purchase Decision Criteria For Firewalls According to our survey data, 62% of respondents indicated that security effectiveness is by far the most influential criteria for driving the purchase of next-generation firewall systems. It was followed by product performance, cited by 41% of respondents. As enterprises implement new security measures or expand their current infrastructure, maintaining security effectiveness and having efficient firewall performance are key criteria (see Figure 6). Of note, although ranked fifth overall, flexibility of firewall platforms was actually the second most important decision criteria among European respondents. As security threats evolve, network security professionals expect NGFWs to provide both security and efficiencies beyond what they can expect from traditional firewalls. The focus is on what the NGFW can do and do well with minimal handholding and management. This is an evolution for the NGFW market where technology and feature function consolidation, along with the ability to manage the NGFW with today s staffing constraints, is helping to drive solution implementation. 6 6 Conclusion As threats continue to evolve, and organizations grapple with staff resource constraints, it is clear that companies can no longer afford to continue adopting legacy approaches and legacy technologies. Another legacy aspect long gone is the practice of vendors taking a didactic approach and telling customers to do things a specific way. In the age of the customer, security-technology vendors are more vested than ever in responding to customer needs and requirements via radical and not the incremental speeds and feeds of old innovation. What security teams want are integrated controls that can scale and change as threats constantly mutate. Hence we see the irreversible trend toward NGFW dominance of in the security gateway market. Today, customers want NGFWs that do more than firewalling and IPS/app control; they want gateways that fight advanced threats like zero-day malware and respond to new cybercriminal tactics such as encrypting payloads or stolen data inside of an SSL tunnel. Therefore, enterprises are demanding advanced threat prevention, sandboxing, and SSL decryption and inspection become the norm in this new generation of NGFWs, with an emphasis on security effectiveness and performance above all else. Vendors have listened and responded, and the market should expect new threats to drive further innovation and product advances in the future. Methodology This Technology Adoption Profile was commissioned by Fortinet. To create this profile, Forrester leveraged its Business Technographics Security Survey from Q Forrester Consulting supplemented this data with custom survey questions asked of network security professional from organizations with 1,000 or more employees in the US, Canada, the UK, France, and Germany. Survey respondents were involved with IT-security investment decision-making and were at the manager level or higher.
