State of Technology at AACC
Desktop Computing Perspective 3,141 PCs and laptops in use 1,818 used for instruction 1,323 in support of faculty and staff Instructional PCs replaced every 3 years, faculty and staff PCs every 4 years Current staff of 8 desktop technicians (267:1) Replacing CRT monitors with LCD flat panel monitors All labs are complete Smart Rooms next Faculty and staff to follow as budget allows
Desktop Computing Perspective Currently our standard printers are not on an established replacement cycle IS is working on a possible replacement cycle proposal Replacement cycle based on number of pages printed rather than age In Data gathering stage of Print Manager Project
Desktop Computing Perspective Currently running Windows 2000 with Office 2000 Support for these products will end in 2010 Need to upgrade While Vista is the most current operating system, most non-standard software currently in use by the college is not compatible and currently not available for Vista We are upgrading college to Windows XP and Office 2007
Desktop Computing Perspective Begin deployment of the faculty and lab systems starting immediately after commencement, Spring 2008 Goal of substantial completion by start of fall term 2008 Coincides with deployment of 600+ new lab PCs Deploy XP/Office 2007 on the staff PCs fall 2008
Desktop Computing Perspective Recent software audit identified 200+ non-standard applications Current software acquisition and deployment procedures are inadequate to properly track non-standard software licensing information leaving college in vulnerable legal position
Asset Management Perspective Currently staffed by one person. Present software/hardware asset management procedures need to be revised Software purchase approval and licensing need to be centralized in order to be both legally compliant and fiscally prudent
Asset Management Perspective Currently looking at both short and long term solutions to software/hardware asset management Will involve a change in culture as well as process Long term goal is to be able to remotely gather license and hardware configuration information Allow reporting to each department on license usage Allow cross-departmental counts for leveraged buying and better pricing.
Asset Management Perspective This project will take a combined effort from all members of the college community Will allow college to stay far more current while saving money and eliminating duplication of technology assets
A/V Perspective Staff of 3 full time employees. Currently 191 Smart and or Modified Smart rooms Goal is to convert all classrooms to Smart/Modified classrooms by 2013 Reduce equipment deliveries Ensure technology is readily available Refocus staff on preventive maintenance The college has over 1,000 pieces of equipment in A/V inventory
A/V Perspective IS currently beta testing a Crestron software package to monitor usage of equipment and room usage Data gathered from project, combined with current industry life cycle data will be basis for proposed A/V technology replacement cycle
