NEWMARKET DISTRICT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY NEWS 221 Carlson Dr, Newmarket, Ont. L3Y 3H4. Telephone: Website: ADMINISTRATOR S MESSAGE - by Lynda Coghill As we move into our last month of school, we would like to extend a thank-you to all of our families and students at N.D.C.A. for a fantastic year at school! We would especially like to thank all of the parent volunteers who have helped us over the course of the school year. Your help has been greatly appreciated and helps us to do many things that we might not normally be able to do! We have definitely seen growth academically, spiritually, physically, socially and emotionally in the children. Teachers have worked hard to provide engaging and effective classroom programs. We also appreciate the hard work of the N.D.C.A. students and the support from our parents. Together we can make a difference! Summer is a time to unwind and recharge after a busy school year. Take time to enjoy the great opportunities for holidays and family time together. Take time to pray together, read books, play inside and outdoor games together. Learning can continue over the summer but can also be achieved in so many incidental ways. Upcoming Events June 12 Professional Development Day (no school for students) June 22 Grade 8 Graduation June 23 Senior Kindergarten Graduation 10 a.m. Last Day of School! Students are dismissed at 11:30. Report Cards are sent home. We extend our congratulations to the 2015 graduating class who will be graduating on June 22 nd. Please pray for them as they move on to high school and experience another journey in their lives. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of our school community. We look forward to seeing everyone back relaxed and ready to go again in September For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 Page 1 of 10
Make the most of summer by having fun and learning too. In September, many teachers report that reading scores drop significantly over the summer. The most important thing that you can reinforce as a family is READING! The local library provides a variety of activities and continues to be the central hub for information in a community where individuals can connect to resources and information. They also offer special programs for children, parent workshops and other information. Today, in our digital world, parents and students can access e-resources for free (magazines, online books, read-a-longs, educational videos, audio books, graphic novels, non- fiction books and other incredible resources). Reading levels for students are identified on the library site. Perhaps this summer, you and your child could explore some of the wonderful educational resources that our public library offers. For Newmarket, go to: or the Georgina library at For some of the sites, you need to obtain a Library Card from the library and have your card number ready to obtain FREE access to some of the sites. For example, at the Newmarket Public Library, the best way to see an overview is to go to the top of the page and click Research. On the left hand side, go to databases. You can view items in alphabetical order. Under W you can access the Worldbook Encyclopedia on line). You can look up interesting topics, in the comfort of your own home using your library card number. You will be surprised at all the online resources! There are games, science projects, a dictionary, information about people, places, science and math, plants and animals, arts, history and government, sports hobbies etc. When you search a certain topic e.g., there may be a video to go with it. If you don t have access to a computer at home, you can visit the library and access theirs. FREE! Online Books to Read from Home (Through the Newmarket Library website)! Tumblebooks: Tumble Books are digital picture books for young children. You do not need a password or username if you go through the Newmarket Public Library site. Students can read or listen to poplar books online. Go to: Check out Tumble Books Biblio Enfants (French versions) Ebscohost: Have your library card available and you can listen to or read online books at Ebscohost. Warning, parental guidance is highly suggested on the Ebscohost site. Parents should help their child choose appropriate books. You are safe if you go to Children and Young Adult Fiction. The online EbscoHost also has 37 Christian Fiction books (when you browse by category go to Christian Fiction). FREE Online Language Lessons The Newmarket Library website has a section called Mango Language. This is an online system that can help you learn a new language of your choice. It is easy to use, all you need is your library card to begin your free language lessons! They have French, Spanish (Latin American), Japanese, English, Chinese (Mandarin) and Italian. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 Page 2 of 10
Try to limit screen time! There is so much more to do outside! Introduce your children to outdoor games such as Freeze Tag, Hopscotch, Frisbee and Simon Says. These are simple and fun ways for children to interact. They can also teach cooperation, listening skills and counting. Today's museums are working hard to make displays that are accessible to children. They also have special summer events. There are a variety of museums across the province to visit. Learn more by visiting: Family trips such as camping and visiting another city can be educational too. Visit local historical sites, take a nature walk or discover local events. Ask your children to look up travel information and research places of interest. A great place to start is In the Car: play games like I Spy or finding license plates from out-of-province cars. This will help to keep everyone entertained and make learning fun. Have your child keep a summer diary. They don't have to use it every day, just when they think they have something important to write. It is a great way for children to record their experiences and remember the things they have done over the summer. For younger children, have them draw pictures of summer activities they are enjoying to create a picture diary. You can record their sentences and have them read the text back to you. Take a Stroll: A walk can provide a chance to explore your part of the world together. Find out what's happening in your neighbourhood. Fairy Lake, in Newmarket, is my personal favourite. Check out the new Splash Pad at the old Community Centre site. If you are going to the beach, or playing in the sandbox in your yard, take along some measuring cups and measure the weight or volume of the sand or water. Encourage your child to write his/her name, do multiplication or draw pictures. If you have a garden, encourage your children to become involved in planting. If you have a balcony, fill a few pots with soil and plant flowers or vegetables. You can also fill an inexpensive window box with herbs or flowers. Use Sidewalk Chalk: You can create hours of fun. Draw pictures, write words, play Tic, Tac, Toe. You can also use water to write words and learn science by watching them evaporate. Page 3 of 10
The Spring Musical: Esther-Ordinary Faith Today we have the freedom to demonstrate our faith as we pray in public, attend church or witness to others. However, Queen Esther kept her faith a secret to silently influence the Persian court, but it was dramatically demonstrated when she risked her life to plead for the salvation of her people. In Esther-Ordinary Faith, the children learned the value of a living faith as they created a first-hand account of the events in Esther's life. Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1 Page 4 of 10

Mr. Eyre s Gr. 5/6 Science Class - Building and Racing Solar Cars on a Sunny Day! The students in grade 5/6 learned all the important components of simple electrical circuits. As an application of what they learned, students created their own circuits. One particularly interesting circuit that they created included the use of solar cell and designing a solar powered vehicle. How can scientific learning possibly be this much fun? Page 7 of 10
