We were privileged to be a part of the tutorial for the medical students. This year there were approx 100 students learning about the impact that asbestos has on the sufferers and their families. Again this year, a new set of students learnt about the social, emotional and environmental issues that are brought about by this deadly material - asbestos. The students had lots of questions for our team of community experts and we hope that with the experience provided by the speakers that they got a real insight into the effects that asbestos has in a community. The ACV/GARDS team, that took part this year tried to give the students a perspective of what it is like for both the sufferer, as well as the family who have to cope with the diagnosis of asbestos disease, not only in their family environment but also with the day-to-day health issues that they must face. GARDS would like to thank Rhonda Dunn, Marie Smith and Dorothy Roberts for sharing their stories with the students. We would also like to thank Dr Margaret Simmons for making this happen. 2 MONASH UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING In September our organisation was approached to participate in an education & awareness session to the nursing students. We gladly accepted the invitation to be a part of the learning curve of these enthusiastic students who will someday be looking after our future asbestos sufferers. It was an honour to meet such a terrific bunch of students, who asked many and varied questions. I hope into the future when they are nursing in a hospital somewhere that they will remember some of what we spoke about, to empower them to have the knowledge and confidence to support asbestos sufferers wherever they go. They will be armed with the whole picture. Thank you to all the students, it was a pleasure to come and talk with you all and a special thanks to Dr Sonia Allen for making it happen. 9 UNSW MEDIA RELEASE THE DANGERS OF DIY HOME RENOVATIONS Home renovators are putting themselves at risk of developing malignant mesothelioma in later life, according to research co-authored by a UNSW academic. Asbestos exposure is causally associated with the development of malignant mesothelioma (MM). While asbestos has been banned in many industrialised countries, including Australia, total ban since Dec 2003, asbestos-containing materials are still found in many Australian homes built pre The work has been published in the Medical Journal of Australia. The research team, including UNSW Associate Professor Deborah Yates, a thoracic physician at the St Vincent s Clinical School, administered a survey by mail to 10,000 New South Wales adults randomly selected from the electoral roll. The questionnaire examined renovation activity, tasks undertaken during renovation and family members reportedly exposed to asbestos. Of the 858 respondents who had renovated their homes and described themselves as DIY renovators, 61.4% (527) reported exposure to asbestos during renovation. Additionally, 39.3% of them reported their partner had also been exposed, and 22.8% reported their children had been exposed as well. Only 12% of the DIY renovators reported using respiratory protection regularly, while 28.4% used it occasionally. Australia has the highest per-capita rate of asbestos diseases in the world, and rates of MM continue to climb, the authors wrote. Recently, there has been concern that exposure from disturbance of building products, including through do-it-yourself home renovation activities, accounts for an increasing proportion of deaths from MM. The researchers acknowledged that the role of low-dose exposure in the development of MM remains controversial, saying that one unresolved question was whether a threshold level exists below which [cancer] does not occur. However, even basic precautions regarding protection against asbestos inhalation are not used in many DIY renovations, they wrote. Whether exposure during home renovation will result in disease in the future remains to be seen; however, this entirely preventable exposure needs to be addressed. Foot note: It is important to remember that the 61.4% of the home renovators who could recall and were aware that they were exposed were ones that knew they were exposed. The real figure will be probably much higher as there is still a great deal of ignorance around what asbestos products/materials can be in and around your home. Most of this item was sourced through UNSW - Media contact: Susi Hamilton, UNSW Media Office, there are comments that ACV/GARDS have included. ACV/GARDS recommend that you get an asbestos audit on your home if it was built prior to 1990 & if you are thinking of doing a home renovation get as much information as possible before you decide to DIY - the preferred choice would be to call a qualified approved registered asbestos removalist - here are just a couple of sites that may help you to get the right info. The third photo is that roofing sheet up close and as you can see in the photo the steel reinforcing can be clearly seen. This is the sort of corrugated roofing sheet that is seen on this house photo. Luckily this sheet has now been taken care of by a qualified registered and approved asbestos removalist.
