5 ANTIGUA CAMPUS POLICIES The policies at International Program campuses are usually the same as on the Faulkner campus, but with the following exceptions: 1. No unexcused devotional or church meeting absences are allowed. 2. No unexcused class absences are allowed. 3. Students are not allowed to operate motorized vehicles. 4. No visitors may be housed in the University housing or the host family s house in Antigua unless special prior arrangements have been made with the Director. 5. Students must travel in groups of two or more. At least two women must be included in any travel group that includes both men and women. Students are advised to travel in larger groups. 6. CASA program does not include independent travel in Central America. 7. Students under the age of 21 must have a specific permission card relating to the program on file in the office before any trips may be made. 8. A curfew or lights out will be enforced at the residence or host family. No one may remain up without specific permission from the faculty or coordinator. 9. Students who fail to maintain good grades on their International Program work may be restricted from traveling. 10. No hot plates or similar electrical appliances are permitted. Hair dryers (220 volts) may be used. 11. Students must sign out of the residence or host family s home EVERY TIME they leave for any reason, giving destination and expected time to return. 12. Keep your room and the kitchen clean at all times for hygiene purposes. 13. Students must be considerate of the host family s schedule and bedtime. 14. Store uneaten food out of the sleeping areas. 15. Students should behave in Christian culturally appropriate ways. 16. Students may go into downtown in small groups, but must return by supper time. Although the following rules are basically the same as those in Montgomery, the unique situation overseas demands our taking note of them. 1. Students are reminded that no male and female students may stay in the same hotel room when traveling. 2. No long distance calls may be charged to the hotel, hostel, school, or host family. 3. No one of the opposite sex is permitted into the men's or women's bedroom areas unsupervised. 4. Women may wear jeans while traveling and for classes and chapel while overseas. Dresses are to be worn for church services and when appropriate. MODEST SHORTS may be worn AFTER classes. Shorts should be no shorter than 2-3 inches above the knee. Athletic shorts are not acceptable for casual wear. Shorts for athletic participation should not be of the extremely short variety. Tight or form-fitting attire such as spandex or biker shorts are not acceptable. It is imperative that students behave and dress appropriately since we are in another country and representing Faulkner University. 5. All students are required to attend church services on Sunday. 6. The consumption of, possession of, or storage of alcoholic beverages of any kind for one's self or for others will result in the automatic suspension of those involved. 7. Although the semester officially ends when students move out of the residence after final examinations are completed, students are still expected to maintain Christian standards of conduct throughout their remaining travel time. I, the undersigned student, have read these rules and those of the Faulkner University Student Handbook. I agree to abide both in the spirit and the letter of all rules. I understand that any failure to

6 do so could result in disciplinary action or expulsion from the program, and that Faulkner University is not under any obligation to refund any fees paid to it. I agree that this contract, its validity, and its interpretation will be governed by the law of the state of Alabama, excluding its provisions for conflict of laws. In the event that I, either on my behalf or that of another, commence legal action against Faulkner University or any of its faculty, staff, or administration for any matter related to or arising from the Campus Abroad Program, I expressly agree that such action can be commenced only in a court of competent jurisdiction in the State of Alabama. 7 PROCEDURES FOR SUSPENSION FROM THE INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM I. OFFICIALS OF THE UNIVERSITY 1. The Code of Student Conduct at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama and the additional rules of the foreign campus policies shall be in force and effect. The student determined to be in violation of those rules shall be disciplined accordingly. 2. The Dean of International Programs in Montgomery (Dr. Rampersad) and the Director of the Campus Abroad Program (Dr. Hicks) or the onsite faculty member are empowered to act as representatives of the Vice President for Student Services in matters pertaining to discipline of students of the International Programs. 3. The Director shall inform the Dean of Students of disciplinary action. The Dean is then free to undertake further disciplinary action at his discretion. II. INTERROGATION OF STUDENTS 1. Students who have been accused of infractions shall first be questioned by the Director or onsite faculty member. 2. The accused student shall be questioned in isolation. 3. Students who allegedly witnessed the infraction will be asked to testify, and such testimony will take place in the presence of the accused. 4. If possible, all interrogations shall be tape recorded. III. SUSPENSION 1. Upon admission of a rule violation or evidence of a suspendable offense, the student shall be informed immediately of the violation and suspension. Standard of Proof: If the director or the temporary student services committee concludes from the evidence that the accused more likely than not committed the offense, then suspension or other sanctions may be imposed. 2. The Director shall call the parents or guardian of the student and notify them of the suspension in the student's presence. 3. The student may then talk with his/her parents or guardian in the presence of the Director or onsite faculty member. 4. The student must vacate the residence within 48 hours of the suspension unless there are extenuating circumstances. 5. Suspended students shall be restricted to the residence until they vacate the premises. 6. Other students may travel with a suspended student only by special permission of the Director. 7. A suspended student may not return to the residence during the semester of his/her suspension without permission. IV. APPEALS 1. A suspended student shall have the right to appeal the suspension to a temporary Student Services Committee. The committee shall be composed of one faculty member (not the Director), one student appointed by the Director, and if possible one other person appointed by the other two members of the committee. Upon appeal, the committee shall conduct a hearing in which relevant evidence shall be

8 presented in a fair and reasonable manner. Neither legal counsel, guardian nor parents of the accused shall be permitted to appear at the hearing except as an eye-witness, not as a character witness. 2. The decision of the temporary Student Services Committee is final and no appeal lies therefrom. V. ASSISTANCE TO SUSPENDED STUDENTS 1. The Director or onsite faculty member of the program, if requested, will render assistance to the suspended student in formulating plans for his/her return to the U.S.A. 2. If requested by the student or his/her parents, the Director or onsite faculty member will assist the student in changing airline or train reservations or buying an airline ticket home (at the student's expense). 3. 11 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF MEDICAL INSURANCE REQUIREMENT & RELEASE I understand and acknowledge that an absolute prerequisite of my being allowed to participate in the Study Abroad program is that I must have in force prior to departure and keep in force for the duration of the trip, a medical insurance policy that will be honored in the country/countries to which and/or through which the trip will be made. I understand and acknowledge as an absolute pre-requisite to my participation in the Study Abroad Program that I must both affirmatively represent (and I do so represent by signing below) that I have secured such medical insurance coverage or will secure such coverage AND that I must present written proof of such coverage to Dr. Edward Hicks at whatever time prior to departure he requires it. I understand and agree that failure to comply with these requirements will result in my not being allowed to make the trip and that I will not be entitled to any refunds of any funds previously deposited toward making the trip. I understand and acknowledge that I must have in my possession at all times during the trip whatever proof of insurance is required for the rendition of medical services in the country/countries to which and/or through which the trip will be made. I understand and acknowledge that neither Faulkner University nor any of its representatives in their individual capacities will be in any way responsible for covering my medical bills, including copayments and deductibles, if I require medical services on the trip. I further understand that no representative of Faulkner University on the Study Abroad trip has the power to obligate Faulkner University to be in any way responsible for my medical bills, including co-payments and deductibles, if I require medical services on the trip; only Dr. Billy D. Hilyer, President of Faulkner University can so obligate the University. I understand and agree that neither Dr. Hicks acceptance of my representation that I have the aforementioned medical insurance coverage nor Dr. Hicks acceptance of my submitted written proof of such coverage will in any way operate to make Faulkner University or Dr. Edward Hicks or any other Faulkner representative responsible for any medical services I require on the trip in the event that my medical insurer does not cover expenses for the services I require. In consideration of being permitted to participate in Faulkner University s Campus Abroad program, the undersigned student and/or his or her spouse and/or his or her parent(s) and/or guardian(s), (hereinafter student) for himself/herself and his/her legal representatives, heirs and assigns, hereby releases, waives and discharges Faulkner University, its Board of Trustees, its officers, administrators, employees (both faculty and staff) and any and all volunteers acting in conjunction with same (hereinafter, Faulkner University), from all liability for any and all loss or damage, and any claim or damages resulting or arising therefrom, on account the student or the participant not having in place the aforementioned medical insurance coverage. Student expressly agrees that this acknowledgement and release agreement is intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by the laws of the State of Alabama, that it is governed by the laws of said State, and that if any portion thereof is held invalid, it is agreed that the balance shall, notwithstanding, continue in full legal force and effect.
