3 RESEARCH INTERESTS Music and children: The development and construction of musical and artistic abilities from early infancy to adolescence; music in infant-parent/caregiver interactions; music-mediated social interactions of children in everyday life; musical development and learning in culture; invented notations and representations of music by children and adolescents; digital technologies and music learning; music education across cultures. Psychology of music: Music learning; Music perception and cognition across the life-span; applied and social psychology of music; musical stereotyping; intelligence, creativity and talent; music and cognitive transfer; musical practices, music and prosocial behaviors, music s role in social cohesion. CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS Music, entrainment and prosocial behaviors: an experimental study with preschoolers in Germany and Brazil (In collaboration with Sebastian Kirschner and Michael Tomasello from the Max Planck Institute, Leipzig, Germany). We are currently writing up a final report based on experiments on entrainment and prosocial behaviors (helping and sharing) in 3- to 4-year-olds from Brazil and Germany. A preliminary version of our work was recently presented at ICMPC11. My place, my music: an international study with 7-year-olds (In collaboration with Susan Young, University of Exeter and Chee Hoo Lum, Nanyang Technological Institute of Singapore, and researchers from 11 countries including UK, Singapore, Kenya, USA and Israel, to name a few). We are currently investigating 7-year-olds uses of music in the home. Data are made available to all researchers int eh group by a WIKI. Preliminary findings were recently presented at the Seminar of the Early Childhood Music Education Commission (ISME) in Beijing, China and EECERA in Birmingham, UK. AIRS: Advancing Interdisciplinary Research in Singing In collaboration with researchers from diverse parts of the world (led by Annabel Cohen, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada), we are conducting research on several aspects of singing. I belong to the group that is studying music teaching and learning. Along with former student Vivian Barbosa, we have just presented a paper at the 2 nd AIRS Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA, last August For more information, please consult Music and language perception in early childhood: an experimental study (In collaboration with Eugenia Costa-Giomi, University of Texas in Austin) We are investigating infant responses to musical and linguistic stimuli (i.e., a same French song, sung and spoken) in the first year of life. Data is being collected at the Infant Lab, Department of Psychology of UT-Austin. Music and Brazilian children In this long-term project I have used both quantitative and qualitative approaches to study musical development of children from diverse areas of Brazil (rural and urban). I interviewed children and adolescents in many areas, and have collected many singing samples (some can be heard on the CD Le Chant des Enfants du Monde Le Brésil - I have just submitted a chapter on the musical cultures of Amazonian girls (refer to book chapters), and am currently writing up a paper based on the musical analyses of songs collected in the state of Pará, Amazon. Musical stereotyping This is my most recent project and so far it includes two studies. The first one concerns the development of national and ethnic stereotypes associated with musical preferences (in collaboration with a former graduate student Bernardo Grassi, now a lecturer at the Arts Faculty of Parana, Brazil). This particular study was conducted with undergraduate students in music. Preliminary interpretations of data were presented at ICMPC11 and the Texas Music Educators Conference. The second study refers to gender stereotyping of musical instruments by school-aged children. Data for this study is being collected at the moment by my former student and colleague Vivian Barbosa.
