10 Case Method Exchange You ll learn by using the case study method. Each case chronicles a current or past real-life business situation. After you read the case, you ll discuss it with your learning team. Then, you ll be given the opportunity to test your ideas and actions in class an environment that fosters healthy exchange and debate. 22 Curriculum The curriculum at Darden recently underwent major changes to better prepare you to get the right internship after your first year and the right job when you graduate. The changes are significant and they make Darden s curriculum among the most exciting anywhere. The Darden MBA Experience is unique. Every day in every class you ll analyze and discuss actual business cases the successes, the failures, the real-world dilemmas of leaders around the globe. Faculty guide rather than dominate the discussion. As a result, Darden MBAs become better decision-makers and leaders. Darden s integrated curriculum reinforces the case method. Our professors recognize that business problems do not occur within a single discipline, while successful leaders understand the importance of analyzing an issue from many perspectives. The First Year Program is largely planned in order to provide students with an integrated perspective on general management. All students take the same ten core courses during the first three quarters in order to develop a common foundation in global business leadership. During the fourth quarter, students continue with two required courses and three electives. Core Courses Accounting for Managers Business Ethics Decision Analysis Financial Management and Policies Global Economies and Markets Leading Organizations Management Communication Marketing Operations Management Strategic Thinking and Action First Year Electives Communicating with an Enterprise Perspective Getting the organization s story across is essential to a com-pany s strategic goals. Doing so means added responsibility and risk, since leaders speak not only for themselves but for their organizations. Communicating with an enterprise perspective builds upon the strategic communication model introduced in the fall, because the views of multiple audiences need to be addressed and balanced. Communicating with a Leadership Perspective Leaders must communicate effectively to get things done. This course deepens the foundations introduced in the fall and prepares students specifically for leadership communication skills typically needed in an internship or first job. The course focuses on setting sound leadership and communication objectives and implementing them. The Consulting Process helps students identify and refine the skill sets necessary for successful consultation. The course is designed specifically for students interested in pursuing consulting internships and careers who do not have significant consulting experience prior to Darden. Data Analysis and Optimization explores data analysis, forecasting, and optimization at a level consistent with an introductory First Year MBA course in quantitative methods. This course expands upon the concepts taught in the required Decision Analysis course. Entrepreneurial Thinking explores the art and science of creating something new from little. The course challenges students to think about how they can create, finance, and build or change a productive business organization with commonly available resources (e.g., intelligence, insight, energy, initiative, and personal relationships). Establishing Yourself at Work prepares students to manage themselves most effectively for their summer internships. Using full-length feature film instead of cases, the course will challenge students to get the most out of their summer internship, while teaching career-management skills. Financial Reporting and Analysis provides a comprehensive conceptual and applied understanding of accounting and financial reporting. Students will examine significant accounting and reporting issues from a rigorous theoretical perspective and an informed practical perspective. General Management and Operations Consulting covers topics and subjects likely to be experienced by MBAs participating in general management development programs or consulting firms with a strong operations orientation. Global Financial Markets emphasizes the development of technical skills to improve understanding of these markets. The course focuses on the key drivers of movement in exchange rates and interest rates around the world, as well as the important institutions and players that impact these markets. Marketing Research helps students become familiar with market research tools commonly used in marketing internships. The course also deals with tools and techniques that are important for students pursuing careers in marketing. Valuation in Financial Markets focuses on how financial assets and firms are valued in financial markets. The course directly extends and strengthens the corporate finance principles from First Year by applying valuation models to real financial data and assets. 20
