Curriculum Alignment and Instructional Integration Goal: Implement Google Apps for Education Type: Technology Alignment to Curriculum Description: Enroll the school district into Google Apps for education and provide staff with professional development training on how to utilize Google Apps to supplement their lesson plan. Supporting Strategies: As technology becomes an ever increasing part of education, it is important that staff possess the skills to use technology in their instruction. If staff do not use technology in their instruction, there is the risk that students may have a more difficult time using technology after high school. In regards to Google Apps, 75% of universities in the United States use Google Apps and all Ivy League schools besides Dartmouth uses Google Apps for education. I believe the idea of using Google Apps for education will spark the interest of students and staff by learning something new. Another supporting factor in regard to using online methods of learning is preparing students to use a Learning Management System such as Blackboard or Schoology. Google Classroom is a Google Apps for Education tool that is free and can prepare students to check on assignment due dates, assignment details, and how to communicate with peers online. Needs Assessment: In order to enforce the use of Google Apps for Education, administrative buy-in is needed by district principals and the superintendent. After buy-in for the use of Google Apps is complete, staff are more likely to adopt the technology from the technology coordinator. To make the learning process smoother and to 1

2 receive buy-in from staff members easier, a technology team will be developed consisting of staff who are inclined to use and learn about Google Apps for Education on their own. Methods / Formats: Professional development will be offered and will last throughout the end of the school year. The technology coordinator will prepare an outline of what will be covered during each session and will integrate the use of Google Apps for teaching each lesson. If staff are able to see Google Apps in action, they will begin to see how they can use Google Apps for Education in their classroom. How to Measure: After each Technology training, all staff members will be required to complete an exit survey on what they learned in the particular training session, what they would like more training on, and what they did not like. Over time, the impact of Google Apps can be seen by who is using it in their classroom according to how many students are using the technology. The measurement is the students knowledge and interest in the technology. Support Goal: In order to support professional development, staff will earn Continuing Education Credit. Positions Involved: Superintendent, Principal, Tech Coordinator / Director Process: Administrators will evaluate this goal by looking at other school districts using Google Apps for Education and whether the project failed or was successful. By learning what worked and what did not, evaluation of the planning and preparation process will be determined. Description: Google Apps for education is a free tool for all educational institutions. Once buy-in from administrators and staff are complete, staff will use the skills they have learned to integrate Google Apps for Education into their lesson plans. Staff will teach students how to use Google Apps and inform them why it is important to adopt technology. Outcome: If the project is successful, staff will have the skills to integrate Google Apps for education with their curriculum. Students will learn how to use methods of collaborating with peers and completing assignments using technology. Positions Involved: Superintendent, Principal, Tech Coordinator / Director Phase 2. Technology Infrastructure Management and Support Goal: Google Chrome Device Initiative Type: Access to Technology Description: Implement Google Chromeboxes and Chromebooks in the school district. Supporting Strategies: With the option of enrolling the school district into Google Apps for Education, Google Chrome devices will complement the use of Google Apps. Google devices are also affordable, have good performance, and are able to replace traditional textbooks with interactive digital versions which can save the 2

3 school district money. A Chrome device of our choice along with management license costs roughly $ for a Chromebook and $ for a Chromebox. With Google Apps for education each user enrolled has unlimited storage space and is able to collaborate extensively with anyone in the organization. Chromebooks are superb testing devices as a kiosk mode is able to be setup from the management console accessible by the technology coordinator. Needs Assessment: Make available two Chromebook carts each to the elementary school, middle school, and high school. Replace Windows based PC's in Media Center with Chromeboxes. Conduct a network analysis to ensure architecture can handle throughput of devices. Conduct professional development with staff. Methods / Formats: Conduct professional development on the devices with staff through the end of the school year. Provide staff with a Chromebook to take home over the summer to use as their own personal device. Once staff return at the beginning of the next school year, return Chromebooks to technology coordinator to place in mobile cart for the use in a classroom. Training materials from the PD sessions will be made available online for staff to return to if necessary. How to Measure: Measurement of professional development may be measured by staff opinion on exit survey completed after each Technology Tuesday training session. Support Goal: Continuing education credit will be offered to staff for completing the Technology Tuesday training session. Positions Involved: Superintendent, Principal, Tech Coordinator / Director, Staff Process: Evaluation of implementing Google Chrome devices in the organization will be based on the cost vs benefit of the device, and how inclined staff are to learn about the device. The first step will be to add an additional lab to the high school media center that contains only Google Chrome devices. If there is buy-in from administrators and staff, more Chrome devices may be purchased. Description: After adding a new lab to the high school media center that contains Google Chrome devices, the technology coordinator will offer training to staff. The training will be held twice a month until the end of the school year or until staff have become comfortable with using the device on their own. Staff will then teach students about the device. If staff and students begin to take ownership of Google Chrome device lab in the Media Center, more devices may be purchased. Outcome: The outcome of the goal is to provide staff with a new tool to engage students interest in learning. Positions Involved: Superintendent, Principal, Tech Coordinator / Director, Staff 3

4 Phase 3. Technology Infrastructure Management and Support Goal: IP Telephony Type: Networking, Internet and Telecommunications Description: Replace analog phone system with IP based phones. Supporting Strategies: Through the current provider the phone bill is $18,600.00/yr. For the first five years there will be an additional cost to pay for the equipment purchased to switch to IP based phones. After the first five years, the phone bill will be $12, Over the course of 10 years, there will only be an additional cost of $30, This plan also compliments a network upgrade by improving LAN technology. Needs Assessment: Phones 7 - Catalyst 2960-X 24 GigE POE 2 - Catalyst 2960-X 48 GigE POE 1 -Voice Gateway * Licenses, SmartNet, Configuration, Installation, Management Adds/Moves/Changes Methods / Formats: After the installation of the IP phone system, the technology coordinator will meet with each building administrator and secretary to train each member on the new phone system. There will also be instructions sent via to all staff. Instructions will be placed on the technology departments webpage on the school website. How to Measure: In order to verify knowledge of the phone system, the technology coordinator will answer any questions from staff members to ensure operation of the new phones are complete. Support Goal: To support the transition from the analog phone system to the IP based phone system, staff are more than welcome to contact the building secretary or technology coordinator if an issue using the system arises. Positions Involved: Tech Coordinator / Director, Building Secretary Process: Apply for E-rate fiscal year '16. Wait for information regarding E-rate from E-rate account manager. Get an official quote from provider and move forward with project. Description: Replace the traditional analog phone system with a more robust, reliable, and cost efficient IP based phone system. Outcome: With IP based phones in place, we will be able to use unified communication technologies to enable more convenient ways of staying connected. The IP based phones will also have a longer lifespan 4

5 than the current analog phones in place. If we look past the upfront cost, we can see a ROI beginning after the first 5 years are over. Positions Involved: Superintendent, Treasurer, Tech Coordinator / Director Phase 4. Technology Policy, Leadership and Administration Goal: Provide methodology for Online State Testing Type: Providing District Leadership Description: As online state testing becomes more prominent and paper/pencil tests are becoming less of an option, test coordinators, guidance departments, and staff need to have information and training on how to administer and coordinate an online test environment. The technology coordinator's goal is to work with these three entities to develop a method for conducting online tests. Supporting Strategies: Supporting strategies include working with testing coordinator and guidance departments by scheduling meetings when new material is released from ODE involving state test information and requirements. In order to prepare students with the knowledge on how to use tools regarding each online subject area, staff will need to be advised on how to administer an online test session as well as how to answer students questions during a test. Needs Assessment: In order to proceed with district wide online testing, technology will need to be in place to provide enough testing sessions for all students in the district. This means preparing a testing schedule for each grade level during the testing window. The goal is to use Google Chromeboxes and Google Chromebooks in classrooms and in labs to ensure the student has a reliable and available testing device. Methods / Formats: Methods for preparing staff include conducting simulation tests with staff after school and assigning staff the job of taking the American Institute for Research Test Administrator Certification course. How to Measure: The readiness of staff, guidance, and test coordinator may be measured by the completion of the Administrator Certification Course as well as by staff attendance of training sessions conducting simulation tests. Staff performance will also be measured on student readiness for working in an online testing environment. Support Goal: In order to support professional development, staff will earn continuing education credit for taking the Research Test Administrators Course. Positions Involved: Tech Coordinator / Director, Curriculum Coordinator, Staff 5

6 Process: Evaluating the goal of providing a methodology for online state testing needs to be evaluated by the technology coordinator, test coordinator, guidance departments, and staff. The process for evaluation includes the actions taken to prepare the school district for online state testing. Commitment and determination to enable district wide online assessments will be needed by all parties. Description: The technology coordinator will be available for answering questions from the test coordinator, guidance departments, and staff in regards to online assessments. A schedule will be created between technology coordinator, test coordinator, and guidance departments to stay up-todate on new online test information from ODE to best prepare staff and students. Outcome: The outcome of creating a methodology for district wide online testing will be a reliable environment for students to take online assessments. Positions Involved: Tech Coordinator / Director, Curriculum Coordinator, Staff 6
