5 The City of Paris Museum of Modern Art mam.paris.fr The City of Paris Museum of Modern Art is housed in the East wing of the Palais de Tokyo, a building constructed for the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques of Modern Life in The collections demonstrate the artistic movements of the 20th century. The museum is equipped with exceptional reception areas, such as the Matisse Room, the Dufy Room, and Rooms 1 and 2 which are dedicated to the works of Robert Delaunay and large-scale cubist works, with a view of the Seine and the Eiffel Tower. 11 Balzac s House balzac.paris.fr Tucked away in a Passy hillside, Balzac s house is the only surviving Parisian home of the novelist. To encourage the reading and re-reading of The Human Comedy, the museum offers an original and fantastical journey, presenting creations by Rodin, Picasso, Louise Bourgeois, and Pierre Alechinsky provoked by this universal work. 15 Bourdelle Museum bourdelle.paris.fr Established in the workshop and gardens where Antoine Bourdelle lived and worked from 1885 onwards, the Bourdelle Museum is the last remaining trace of the Montparnasse artists residences. All of the master s creations are exhibited: clays, plasters, bronzes, and marbles. The garden, the gallery s arches, and the grand Hall of plasters make for a poetic and singular setting. By contrast, the wing built by Christian de Portzamparc features an extremely contemporary décor made from stone, cement, and glass. 25 Cernuschi Museum Museum of Asian Art cernuschi.paris.fr Located on the edge of Parc Monceau in the heart of Paris business district, the museum is based inside the former private residence of Henri Cernuschi, who donated his Asian collections to the City of Paris. It houses a beautiful collection of Chinese and Japanese art, and offers temporary exhibitions dedicated to Asian art. The beautiful proportions and refinement which are unique to private residences in Monceau make this space the ideal setting for prestigious events, the Buddha Room in particular. 29 Cognacq-Jay Museum Museum of 18 th Century Art museecognacqjay.paris.fr Right in the heart of the Marais, the Cognacq- Jay Museum brings together the collection of the founder of the Samaritaine department stores. A beautiful collection of paintings and sculptures by 18 th century masters, as well as furniture and art objects, are displayed here. Hotel Donon, built in 1575 and home to the museum since 1990, has been constantly transformed, reorganised, and redecorated, and is evidence of the architecture of wealthy homes and Parisian refinement. 37 General Leclerc Museum, Jean Moulin Museum ml-leclerc-moulin.paris.fr These museums narrate the actions of three «Companions of the Liberation»: Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque, General in the 2 nd Armoured Division, Jean Moulin, a unifier for the Resistance, and the City of Paris. The course of the Second World War, the fate of occupied France, and the actions of the Resistance are presented through their destinies. The museums are located in the Jardin Atlantique in Montparnasse, the former train station of which was General Leclerc s commanding post at the time of the Liberation. 51 Museum of Romantics vie-romantique.paris.fr Located in the peace and quiet of the rue Chaptal, the Museum of Romantics is dedicated to art created under the Restoration and the July Monarchy, and in particular George Sand and Ary Scheffer. The painter lived and worked in the house for almost thirty years, and hosted the artistic elite of his time in the workshop-salon: Chopin, Liszt, Lamartine, Delacroix, Thiers, and Dickens. The collection brings together paintings, art objects, and furniture bearing testament to this superb period. 55 Zadkine Museum zadkine.paris.fr A stone s throw from the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Zadkine Museum is a haven of peace and memory, dedicated to the Russian sculptor and master of direct carving who was a major figure in the School of Paris. It was the artist s living and working space from 1928 to The museum has a delightful garden, and was renovated on its thirtieth anniversary to more closely reflect the spirit of the workshop, of which it is one of the last pieces of evidence. The new presentation of the collections has been redesigned around the question of materials, and establishes a dialogue between plaster, clay, wood, and stone.
