1 College of Education Graduate Departmental Course Syllabus Summer 2014 as of 5/6/2014 The College of Education is dedicated to the ideals of Collaboration, Academic Excellence, Research, and Ethics/Diversity (CARE). These are key tenets in the Conceptual Framework of the College of Education. Competence in these ideals will provide candidates in educator preparation programs with skills, knowledge, and dispositions to be successful in the schools of today and tomorrow. Course Prefix and Number: EDF 6284 (online only) Credit Hours: 3 Course Title: Problems in Instructional Design for Computers Instructor: Melissa A. Venable, PhD, Course Description: This course focuses on the systematic design of instructional courseware, including analysis, media selection and evaluation. Topics include instructional strategies, screen design, response analysis, feedback and interactivity. Prerequisite: Computer Literacy. Course Goals and Objectives: After successful completion of the course activities and assignments, student should be able to: Conduct a basic front- end analysis. (IBSTPI 4, 6, 7) Write behavioral learning objectives. (IBSTPI 11) Select online instructional activities and assessments. (IBSTPI 8) Conduct an evaluation of an instructional product. (IBSTPI 17) Plan and create an instructional product as part of a design team. (IBSTPI 10, 12, 15, 16) Through participation in course activities, students in this course should: Develop awareness of multiple approaches to the instructional design process, particularly for elearning environments. (IBSTPI 2) Practice implementation of the different components of a systematic instructional design process. Three synchronous sessions will take place at 7pm ET on May 14 th, June 11 th, and July 9 th. Discussion Questions: It is expected that during the weeks that include discussion forum posts, each student will post his or her original response by Thursday at 11:59 pm ET. This allows ample time for replies to be posted by the end of the week, Sunday at 11:59 pm ET. Detailed instructions for each assignment are found in the course materials posted in the course site. All grades will be posted in the course Grade Center in Canvas. Assignment details are available in the Weekly Modules of the course in Canvas. 3

4 Unless otherwise noted, all assignments are to be submitted no later than 11:59 pm ET on the Sunday of the week in which the assignment is due. No late assignments will be accepted, except with medical documentation. Grading Criteria: A+: total points A: A- : B+: B: B- : C+: C: C- : Student final grades for the course will be based on the following components: Discussion Questions (8 x 50): 400 points total Team Project Milestones: (5): 250 points total Team Project Prototype: 300 points Peer Evaluation: 50 points Total possible: 1000 points Students are required to: Complete all reading assignments for discussion and contribute to discussions. Complete assignments in a timely manner. Maintain back- up files of work. Students are responsible for their own files. It is suggested that all work be saved in a back- up location (i.e. thumb drive, cloud service) prior to submission via Canvas. Resubmission Policy: You can redo assignments, if you received an original grade that was a C or below. This is not an invitation for a series of iterative drafts of each assignment. The instructor will re- grade the assignment and substitute the new grade. However, this option is only open with certain limitations: The first submission was on time and a solid, serious attempt at the assignment. For re- submission, there is a time limit of two weeks after the original due date of the assignment. There will be no resubmissions within the last two weeks of the semester. Re- submission does not guarantee a better grade. Results will depend on the instructor's evaluation. No final course grade below C- or S will be accepted toward a graduate degree. 5 Clark, R. C., & Mayer, R. E. (2011). E-Learning and the Science of Instruction: Proven Guidelines for Consumers and Designers of Multimedia Learning, 3 rd ed. San Francisco: Pfeiffer. Other web- based reading as assigned each week in Canvas. Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism is defined as "literary theft" and consists of the unattributed quotation of the exact words of a published text or the unattributed borrowing of original ideas by paraphrase from a published text. On written papers for which the student employs information gathered from books, articles, or oral sources, each direct quotation, as well as ideas and facts that are not generally known to the public-at-large, must be attributed to its author by means of the appropriate citation procedure. Citations may be made in footnotes or within the body of the text. Plagiarism also consists of passing off as one's own, segments or the total of another person's work. Punishment for academic dishonesty will depend on the seriousness of the offense and may include receipt of an "F" with a numerical value of zero on the item submitted, and the "F" shall be used to determine the final course grade. It is the option of the instructor to assign the student a grade of "F" of "FF" (the latter indicating dishonesty) in the course. Detection of Plagiarism: The University of South Florida has an account with an automated plagiarism detection service which allows instructors to submit student assignments to be checked for plagiarism. I reserve the right to 1) request that assignments be submitted to me as electronic files and 2) electronically submit to SafeAssignment.com, or 3) ask students to submit their assignments to SafeAssignment.com through myusf. Assignments are compared automatically with a database of journal articles, web articles, and previously submitted papers. The instructor receives a report showing exactly how a student's paper was plagiarized. Web Portal Information: Every newly enrolled USF student receives an official USF account that ends with "mail.acomp.usf.edu." Every official USF correspondence to students will be sent to that account. Go to the Academic Computing website and select the link "Activating a Student E- mail Account" for detailed information. Students are required to give reasonable notice (typically 5 working days) prior to requesting an accommodation USF Policy on Religious Observances: 5
