JUSTIFICACIÓN CURSO The study of Latin America is an essential part of the concentration in International Relations for the International Business Program, since it provides students with a specific knowledge of this region, the different countries that belong to it, and their international insertion. Additionally, Latin America and its future play a fundamental role in Colombia's foreign relations in all its dimensions, including political, economic, social and commercial. This can only be achieved through a historic approach to the Latin American reality, first from a political perspective and then from an economic point of view, as a condition to acquire a panoramic vision over this part of the western hemisphere and its role in the complex network of International Relations, especially today when the world requires professionals to understand, from other perspectives, the high level of interdependence that characterizes the international network of economic, political and business nnections. The study of Latin America also requires the analysis of the specific influence of other powers in the region. Traditional and historic European Powers as Spain, France and the United Kingdom, the United States and recently countries as China and India have

2 deeply influenced the evolution of the region and its participation on the international system. The critical internal structures and patterns of behavior of the region and its countries will also be analyzed and then the study of Latin America becomes more than the sum of its links with outside powers. However, the dependent character of these systems highlights the blurred boundaries between the domestic political systems and the international system within which they function. 4. OBJETIVOS GENERALES DEL CURSO 4. To analyze, from a critical perspective, the political, economic and socio-cultural 4. interactions of Latin American countries, in order to allow the students to identify the 4.3. main challenges for the region in the context of contemporary international relations To analyze each one of the countries of Latin America and its multilateral integration 4.5. mechanisms to complement the regional panorama through a comprehensive vision 4.6. of the common factors in all of them To provide the students with skills to present discussion topics about Latin America 4.8. and to identify the main challenges and future perspectives of the region. 5.
