4 W H A T I S D I A B E T E S? W E B S I T E S & S E R V I C E S Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not make or use insulin properly. Diabetes results in high blood sugar. If uncontrolled, diabetes can lead to complications. Serious complications from diabetes include heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, and amputation. The risk of complications from diabetes can be reduced with proper health management. PRE-DIABETES Blood sugar levels higher than normal but not as high as Type 2 diabetes. People at risk are often overweight, not physically active, and have a family history of diabetes. People with pre-diabetes are likely to develop Type 2 diabetes within 10 years. Lifestyle changes and disease management can help reduce your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes. TYPE 2 DIABETES The body makes some insulin but does not use the insulin properly. Most people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight % of those diagnosed with diabetes have this type. TYPE 1 DIABETES The body makes very little or no insulin. Type 1 diabetes is less common than Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs in 5-10% of all people with diabetes. 8 D O Y O U H A V E D I A B E T E S? M A N A G I N G Y O U R C O N D I T I O N HOW DO YOU FIND OUT IF YOU HAVE DIABETES OR PRE-DIABETES? There are two types of blood sugar (glucose) tests that are used to tell if you have diabetes or pre-diabetes. Both tests require a fasting period. Fasting Blood Glucose Test Pre-diabetes glucose level = mg/dl Diabetes glucose level = 126 mg/dl or higher Oral Glucose Tolerance Test Involves a special glucose drink and a blood test done 2 hours later Normal glucose level = is 139 mg/dl or below Pre-diabetes glucose level = mg/dl Diabetes glucose level = 200 mg/dl or above It is normal for testing to be repeated to confirm diagnosis. Visit your doctor or health care professional to obtain a fasting blood test or oral glucose tolerance test to tell if you have diabetes or pre-diabetes. Source: American Diabetes Association Once you ve been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes, it is important to learn as much as you can about managing your condition. Your diabetes health care team should include your doctor, a certified diabetes educator, and a registered dietitian. They will teach you about: Eating healthy Staying physically active Monitoring your blood sugar Monitoring your eyes, your vision and your feet Taking your medicine (if prescribed) Setting healthy goals Problem solving In addition to the local chapter of the American Diabetes Association, there are several resources available in the tri-county area that can help you as you learn to manage your diabetes. Resources available include diabetes education programs, prescription assistance, and diabetes support groups. See pages 9-10 in this resource booklet. 6 7
