3 Course Description Introduction The major aim of this course is to enhance students understanding of the scope of organizational behaviour not only as a field of study but, most importantly, to grasp its potential value in today s organizational life. This course focuses on three levels of analysis: the individual, the group, and the organization. We all wish for a challenging and satisfying career, we all aim to perform well in a healthy and sustainable environment. Throughout the semester, students will have the opportunity to learn about and apply current theories of organizational behaviour (OB). Development indicates identifiable learning in relation to the goals and objectives. Integration means that the goals and objectives are understood and applied in a relevant manner in a variety of new contexts and situations. A course may incorporate one or more of the program s goals and objectives. It may also initiate the learning process towards one goal and integrate the learning of another, depending on the particular abilities and skills on which the course focuses.» «2 This refers to the evaluation methods used in the course to assess the degree of achievement of the program goals, for example: case study, open exam question, project, portfolio, quiz, etc. The same evaluation methods could be used to collect Assurance of Learning data.» Instructional Approach The teaching materials and the teaching methods used in this course were developed to help you learn through collaborating, communicating and sharing with your peers as well as individually deepening your reflection and understanding of OB. During the semester, you will be required to read documents and consult multimedia materials, most of which will be available on the course website. These tools will introduce you to the fundamental notions and concepts of OB. You will then have the opportunity to transfer your newly acquired knowledge to case studies to strengthen your OB skills. The overall objective of our semester together is to experience innovative approaches for learning and knowledge sharing. Here is a short list of various learning activities that we will use during this semester: LEARNING ACTIVITIES Required and Suggested Readings PowerPoint Presentations Video and audio capsules Your contribution to course development Discussion Forums LEARNING OBJECTIVES You will be assigned weekly readings that will help you acquire the fundamental notions and concepts of OB. To present you with a summary of the fundamental notions and concepts of OB. To complement readings and class discussions. During the session, you will be asked to find, review and comment on various articles that deal with the course topics. You will also have an opportunity to experiment with new teaching and learning methods by taking part in role-playing activities. Whether to ask a question about the subject or participate in a debate, you will have an opportunity to comment and/or respond to weekly questions. 5 Online Quizzes Experiential exercises Case studies Exams (mid-term and final) To help you gauge where you are in understanding the course material, short quizzes will be available on the course website done during the session. To help you become aware of the importance and role of various OB dimensions and of some of your own behaviours, attitudes or values (undertaken in role-playing activities). Business cases allow you to develop the necessary skills to implement concepts to real business environments. At mid and at the end of the session, you will have to write an exam on topics covered in the course. Consult the Evaluation and Results section for more full details. Supervision The hybrid teaching format is ideal as it provides the benefit of learning in both a classroom and on-line environment. To succeed, however, it is important to adopt a regular learning rhythm from the beginning of term. This will enable you to meet the course deadlines, use your learning community as a lever to help you in your own learning process and take advantage of the instructor's feedback on the course material. Students are the sole managers of their own time, but they must submit their assignments by the deadlines or face a penalty. The instructor will give you regular feedback, integrated into online quizzes, classroom discussions, discussion forums or on your graded work. And you can always your instructor to ask her more personalized questions. In the discussion forums, the instructor will intervene as required. However, the goal is to encourage student leadership within the group discussions. You are invited to submit answers on the forums. This is an arena of learning where there are no wrong answers. The discussion forums, just like class discussions, should be an opportunity not only to "go outside the box" but to "remove the box". Let's explore what lies ahead! Comments on supervision : The instructor will read all messages on the forums and visit the course site daily. Do understand that questions will not be answered immediately. Personal s will be answered as quickly as possible. To ensure a prompt answer, you are asked to make your questions and comments clear and self-explanatory (e.g. cite the names of the documents and the page numbers referred to). Or that summarizing an author s original idea in your own words without citing the source, and translating a text in part or entirely without stating its origin, are also prohibited? To avoid exposing yourself to consequences ranging from failing a course to expulsion from the university, consult the following website: You ll find everything you need to avoid plagiarism. Disciplinary Regulations Any student who is found to have committed a violation of the Règlement disciplinaire à l intention des étudiants de l Université Laval (Université Laval student disciplinary regulations) in this course, especially involving plagiarism, will be subject to the penalties set out in the regulations. Students should familiarize themselves with sections 28 to 32 of the disciplinary regulations. These can be found (in French only) at the following web address: Exam Absences It is the students responsibility to ensure that exam times do not conflict at the beginning of each semester as the Faculty is unable to offer special arrangements. For more information (French only), go to: Students with disabilities, learning difficulties or mental health problems Students who have a letter of Attestation d accommodations scolaires [English: certificate of academic accommodation] issued by a counsellor from the Accueil et soutien aux étudiants en situation de handicap section [French acronym: ACSESH; English: students with disabilities support services section] must inform their professor or instructor at the start of the session so that accommodation measures in the classroom or during examinations can be put in place by their program administration. Students with a functional impairment or disability who do not have this letter must contact the ACSESH at as soon as possible. ACSESH strongly recommends that you take advantage of all the services to which you are entitled in order to succeed in your program, without discrimination or special privileges. For more information, please see the Procédure de mise en application des mesures d accommodations scolaires [English: application for accommodation measures] at: Deadlines and Overdue Work The learning schedule laid out in the calendar should be adhered to as much as possible. After that, the work will not be accepted and a mark of 0 will be given for that evaluation. There are exceptional circumstances that may prevent a student from submitting an assignment on time. In such cases, it is the student s responsibility to inform the teacher as soon as possible to discuss an extension or plan an alternative. During the session, a link to the course evaluation questionnaire will be uploaded to the course website home page. This evaluation is very important, as it will allow us to improve the course. The course supervisors thank you in advance for your collaboration. Please note that this evaluation is confidential. Link to the course evaluation system.
