1 FUTURE WAGER The Kentucky Derby Future Wager ( KDFW ) is an innovative pari-mutuel wager that allows fans across North America the opportunity to wager on their Derby selections weeks, and even months, in advance of the famed Run for the Roses at odds that could be considerably more attractive than those available on the day of the race. Churchill Downs made pari-mutuel wagering history on Feb. 18, 1999 as betting on the KDFW officially began in the months leading up to Kentucky Derby 125. The KDFW was the first pari-mutuel wager of its kind to offer betting far in advance of the actual event. Wagering was traditionally offered during three separate betting pools over a three-day period it was held over four days from and is annually scheduled in February and March, and sometimes in early April. In 2013, Churchill Downs market-tested a fourth pool during the final week of its Fall Meet some 5 ½ months in advance of the race. It was held over four days, Wednesday, Nov. 27 through Saturday, Nov. 30 and closed prior to post time of Aqueduct s Remsen Stakes at 3:49 p.m. ET. The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager ( KOFW ) was added to the mix in It was a single pool that year but, like its KDFW counterpart, it was expanded to a three-pool format from In 2009, the KOFW returned to a single pool format to present a strong roster of serious Oaks wagering interests. It is held concurrently with Pool 2 of the KDFW. The unique draw of the bets is that the scheduling of the sessions so far in advance of the Derby and Oaks provides fans higher odds on the contenders than those they would possibly receive on Derby and Oaks Days. The KDFW and KOFW are a $2 minimum win wager. Exacta wagering, which requires the bettor to select the first two finishers in exact order, was introduced for Pools 2 and 3 of the KDFW in 2009 ($2 straight exactas; $1 boxes and part-wheels). In the event of a finish in which multiple members of the all others betting interest occupy spots at the top of the official order of finish, the calculation of the $2 exacta payout will be conducted in accordance with Kentucky Horse Racing Commission rules on coupled entries. For example, if horses in the mutuel field (No. 24) occupy the first five spots in the Derby s order of finish and No. 9 finishes sixth, the winning exacta numbers will be 24/9. Exacta wagering was added to the KOFW menu in All winning payouts are determined by the odds in place at the end of each respective betting pool. No refund will be made on any wager made during the KDFW and KOFW pools. If it is determined during those pools that any of the individual betting interests has suffered an illness, injury or other circumstance that would prevent that horse from competing in either race, wagering on that betting interest will be suspended immediately. The field of horses in each pool consists of 24 betting interests, which include 23 horses and a 24 th interest that is a mutuel field that contains all other 3-year-old Thoroughbreds regardless of whether those horses have been nominated to the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown. The mutuel field in the Kentucky Oaks bet consists of all other 3-year-old fillies. The individual wagering interests are selected by a Churchill Downs committee that includes Racing Secretary Ben Huffman, Senior Director of Communications and Media Services Darren Rogers, Director of Programming and Senior Racing Analyst Jill Byrne, Player Services Manager Gary Palmisano and Vice President, Racing Communications John Asher. The KDFW will be offered for the 17 th consecutive year in 2015: KDFW Pool 1: Nov , 2014 (22 weeks out) KDFW Pool 2: Feb. 6-8 (12 weeks out) KDFW Pool 3: Feb. 27-March 1 (9 weeks out) KDFW Pool 4: March (5 weeks out) The lone KOFW will be offered for the 13 th consecutive year in 2015: Feb. 27-March 1 (9 weeks out) Wagering on each of the KDFW pools will open at noon (all times Eastern) on Friday and close on Sunday at 6 p.m. The lone KOFW pool will close 30 later at 6:30 p.m.. Wagering is offered at Churchill Downs and racetracks throughout North America; via the official online wagering site of the Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs Incorporated ( CDI ), and other advance deposit wagering ( ADW ) sites; and at simulcast centers and off-track betting sites. Wagering interests are announced on the Tuesday prior to the Friday start of each pool. Real-time odds and other information on the KDFW is available at the official event Web site at Churchill Downs Racetrack made adjustments in the scheduling of the KDFW and KOFW in 2012, establishing its pool schedules a week or two in advance of most of the major preps for the big races at Churchill Downs. The intent was to present KDFW and KOFW pools that were more true to the future wager concept and completed before the preps viewed as most significant by fans and Derby owners and trainers.
