4 Introduction In the last 10 years the counseling field has seen a trend towards licensure of professional counselors. As of January 1998, 46 states had some type of counselor credentialing or licensure (ACA, 1998). In response to this trend, the Master s of Science in Human Resources Counseling degree prepares counselors to be eligible for licensure. An integral part of students preparation involves practicum or field training. The course HURES 5553 is designed to give students a minimum of two semesters of counseling experience in a mental health or college setting. This experience is designed to hone students skills in counseling, treatment planning, and case management. It is through the partnership of the graduate program at East Central University and supervisors at mental health agencies and college counseling centers that students are able to gain this type of experience Program Goals The primary objective of the Graduate Counseling Program is to provide preparation for individuals who desire to pursue a career in the field of counseling and to be licensed as a counselor (LPC). The program helps students to develop the knowledge and skills to be employed in a variety of organizations and agencies that provide mental health and counseling services. The objectives of the Graduate Counseling program are: 1. To assist students in meeting the educational requirements for licensure. 2. To contribute to the career development of persons currently employed in both the public and private sector. 3 To prepare preservice professionals to enter the field of counseling. 4. To provide practicum experiences common to the students career choice. 2

5 The Curriculum Students in the Graduate Counseling Program complete a 60 hour program that is consistent with the educational requirements set forth by the LPC Regulatory Board. The following coursework is required for completion of the Master of Science in Human Resources Counseling degree (see Appendix A for a complete plan of study). Research hrs. Counseling theory, Developmental and Behavioral theory, Psychopathology, and Assessment hrs. Theory and Practice hrs. Practicum and Internship hrs. Electives hrs. Total hrs. The Practicum The practicum experience (HURES 5553) is designed to give students practical counseling experience in addition to their coursework. Students complete three practica courses, with one practica being in class, the other two in the field. Each practicum is designed to give students knowledge they will need to provide quality service to clients. Additionally, students complete one practicum that focuses on counselor supervision. Practicum I Requirements: This is a skills practice course. All of the students experiences are in the classroom setting. Limited work with an actual client is done under the supervision of the instructor. Practicum II Requirements: This is a field based practicum course. All students are required to complete 150 hours of class and field based experience per LPC requirements. Students who are enrolled in Practicum II must be working at an approved practicum site. Students study treatment planning, advanced counseling skills, and the DSM IV. Hour requirements Students must complete the following hours during Practicum II to partially fulfill the supervised hour requirements for licensure: 3

6 Taping requirements Direct Client Contact --50 hrs. of face-to-face individual or group counseling work with clients (may include some observation). Supervision --17 hrs. of supervision with an approved supervisor (approximately 1 hr. a week). Preparation--93 hrs. of classwork, case management duties, and paperwork associated with the treatment of their clients. Students must audiotape 5 sessions with one client (or more than one if necessary) during Practicum II. Students are required to gain informed consent of the client (or guardian if the client is under the age of 18) to tape. Taping of the client should not jeopardize the counseling relationship with the client. The counseling tapes will be reviewed by the instructor to provide the counselor in training feedback on their counseling skills. Once the tapes are reviewed they are erased. Liability insurance Students are required to show proof of counselor liability insurance prior to working with clients at their practicum site. Liability insurance may be purchased by the student or may be provided by the practicum site. Location of Practicum Site The location of the practicum site will not be limited by the range of community distance from the University. Special effort will be made to place students at a site that meets their career goals while considering convenience and economics. Grading The assignment of a letter grade (A,B,C,D, or F) at the completion of each practica shall be primarily based upon the following: 1. Evaluation of the practicum student s experiences by the field supervisor; 2. Evaluation of the practicum student s experiences by the faculty supervisor; 3. Evaluation of written assignments. 4

7 East Central Practicum Course Requirements The following are course requirements and supervision guidelines for HURES 5553 (II), Practicum in Human Services. General Requirements 1. Spend a minimum of 100 hours in an approved mental health or college setting assuming all of the fundamental roles and tasks required of the practicing counselor. 2. Observe all agency policies and procedures with regard to attendance and work tasks. 3. Maintain a daily log of practicum activities. The log is to be signed weekly by the field supervisor. The log is to be submitted to the faculty supervisor. 4. Meet a minimum of one (1) hour a week for supervision with the field supervisor. In addition, regular meetings with the faculty supervisor may also be required. 5. Prepare (5) audiotapes of sessions with a client(s). Complete a Review of Counseling Form ( see Appendix C) for each session. Secure client s consent to tape (see Appendix D). 6. Observation should be a part of the practicum experience. Where it is possible for the student to learn from the supervisor s modeling of appropriate counseling and professional behaviors. The practicum student should have frequent opportunities to accompany the supervisor on a wide variety of field work activities. This will allow the practicum student to get the feel of the total experience of the practicing counselor. 5

8 The Role and General Responsibilities of the University and Faculty Supervisor The role of the University refers primarily to the role of the faculty supervisor assigned by the Department of Human Resources. Practica are considered part of the curriculum. The faculty supervisor will assume overall responsibility for consultation with the agency and the student in terms of objectives, content, and experiences. In general terms, the faculty supervisor will be responsible for ensuring that the student receives maximum benefit from the practicum experience and that the practicum benefits both the agency as well as the student. Specifically, the faculty supervisor is responsible for the following: 1. Orientation and introduction of the student to the nature and purpose of the practicum experience; 2. Selection assistance and approval of the practicum site. 3. Clear interpretation to the student of the course requirements, student role expectations, and method of grading. 4. Orienting and introducing the agency (field) supervisor to the nature and purpose of the practicum and the agency s role and responsibility in the learning process. 5. Consulting with the agency (field) supervisor on a regular basis regarding the student s performance, including any problems that are disrupting the student s learning, etc.; 6. Generally, making one field visit per practicum enrollment for consultation with the student and agency (field) supervisor; 7. Evaluating the student s written reports in terms of content and helping the student integrate classroom and field based learning; 8. Assuming responsibility for the supervision or complete removal of a student from the practicum placement whenever indicated. 9. Overall evaluation of performance and integration of knowledge for the purpose of assigning a course grade. 6

9 The Role and General Responsibilities of the Agency (Field) Supervisor The agency and/or field supervisor will be primarily responsible for the following: 1. Introducing and orienting the student to the agency s policies pertaining to working hours, standards of conduct, scheduled meetings and conferences, travel requirements, etc. The supervisor should introduce the student to the professional and clerical staff, and provide work space and supplies; 2. Introducing and orienting the student to the agency s structure, programs, and function; 3. Introducing and orienting the student to the agency s expectation regarding appropriate dress, policies governing confidentiality, and other related modes of professional role behavior; 4. Teaching the student the agency s role in the community and working relationships with other agencies including referral procedures; 5. Familiarizing the student with policies and procedures regarding case management, record keeping, intake, termination and emergency situations; 6. Orienting the student to common client populations served by the agency and the social needs, problems, and dynamics of each; 7. Introducing the student to available community resources as well as gaps in service; 8. Explaining the types and timing of communications--meetings, conferences, written reports, etc.; 9. Assigning and supervising the completion of client-related tasks and responsibilities that are in keeping with the student s readiness to complete adequately; 10. Allowing the student to accompany the supervisor to home visits, office interviews, meetings, conferences, etc., where the student has the opportunity to identify with the supervisor as a professional; 7

10 11. Informing the faculty supervisor whenever the supervisor becomes aware of personal problems or communication problems that are disrupting the student s learning or performance; 12. Providing weekly supervisory conferences designed to enhance the the student s learning and performance; 13. Evaluating the student s performance and making suggestions for improvements as necessary; 14. Complete and return the Practicum Contract Form (see Appendix E). 15. Submitting written student evaluation reports to the faculty supervisorat two times during the each semester which should be discussed with the student (see Appendix F). The Role and Responsibilities of the Student During the course of practicum, the student will conform to agency personnel policies, such as working hours, dress, and holidays. Any minor exceptions must be cleared through the field supervisor, and major deviations are to be discussed with both the field supervisor and faculty supervisor. The student should adhere to the following general guidelines; 1. Assume responsibility for actions and activities; 2. Work cooperatively and professionally with supervisors and co-workers; 3. Approach new situations with a positive attitude and eagerness to learn from the experiences of others; 4. Apply knowledge learned in the classroom to practical situations; 5. Develop professional rather than personal relationships with clients; 6. Treat client information with strict confidentiality; 8

11 7. Be punctual and thorough in completing and submitting all work assignments; 8. Prepare for and utilize case conferences with other professionals as learning situations which will improve the quality of services; 9. Show willingness to accept and profit from constructive criticisms and suggestions; 10. Exhibit ability to remain flexible in whatever day-to-day situations occur and creativity in finding solutions to new problem situations; 11. Notify the faculty supervisor and the field supervisor of any situations that might affect completion of the practicum; 12. Prepare for and participate cooperatively in supervision. 13. Maintain daily logs of practicum activities. 14. Remain at the practicum site until completion of the course. Evaluation of Students Evaluation of students consists of continuous self-analysis by the student and periodic analysis of the student s progress by the faculty supervisor and the field supervisor. Growth in professional competence will be evaluated both subjectively and objectively in terms of competencies desired in a beginning practitioner. The major purpose of evaluation is to enable the faculty supervisor and the field supervisor, to render judgements periodically, concerning the work done by the student in the practicum. It is through such judgements that the student gains insight which may result in improvement of practice. Since the faculty supervisor and field supervisor have direct responsibility for assessing the student s competence, they are concerned with developing adequate quantitative and qualitative indicators of such. These evaluations will be used periodically throughout the practicum. When preparing the written evaluation, the following principles are to be kept in mind: 1. The underlying philosophy and approach of evaluation is to be directed constructively toward strengthening the student both personally and professionally; 9

12 2. The evaluation should be completed on the student as a student completing a practicum and not as an employee if the student should be functioning in both capacities during the practicum; 3. Evaluation should be done with the student rather than merely of the student; 4. Evaluation is properly regarded as a continuing process, not a single event in time. It is suggested the agency supervisor keep notes to aidin completing the periodic evaluations (see Appendix F); 10
