Over the years, REGENT Business School has dedicated itself to its student-centred philosophy by continually reviewing the curricula of its programmes to ensure their alignment with regulatory requirements and relevance to the changing needs of various work environments in which our students find hemselves both within and outside South Africa. In tandem with this, our teaching and learning strategy continues to be reviewed to ensure that it lives up to our commitment to taking the distance out of distance learning. We have used technology to support and enrich interaction with our students, irrespective of their physical location on the globe. To make all this possible, RBS has invested in a magnificent new main campus located on the Eastern Seaboard of the Indian Ocean in Durban. The new campus boasts state-of-the-art lecture and syndicate rooms, computer laboratories, library, and other amenities. 4 Overview of REGENT Business School Why Choose REGENT Business School REGENT Business School (RBS) is a Private Higher Education Institution registered in terms of the Higher Education Act (101 of 1997).It was established in 1998 as a post-apartheid empowerment institution offering affordable and accessible business and management education programmes. These programmes cover the areas of business administration, commerce, management and leadership, entrepreneurship, local government, educational management and range from Higher Certificates to Postgraduate Degrees. In keeping with its mission, RBS s students are drawn from many vocational backgrounds from South Africa and other SADC countries. What support does REGENT Business School Provide? A range of services and resources are available to facilitate a meaningful learning experience for all students. Academic Support: One-to-one Support In order to help you study more effectively, develop key academic skills and access academic support, you can book an appointment to talk with a faculty member to address your specific areas of concern. This facility is available via telephone, and RBS website. Workshops Sessions The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) facilitates workshop sessions for students where teaching and learning can take place. Workshops are held twice each semester in regions where there are adequate student numbers per module. Workshops are held on weekends for distance learning students and weekly for supported distance learners. The workshops use a number of practical exercises to introduce the principles of action learning, a method that Regent Business School uses to facilitate understanding and aid in the retention of knowledge. Workshops provide the ideal forum for students to clarify areas of difficulty identified in their self-study programme. Whilst it is not compulsory to attend these workshops, all students are encouraged to attend the workshops at the nearest available workshop venue. In addition to obtaining additional insight regarding the modules, students have the opportunity of meeting and interacting with other students and academics. Enrichment Sessions Enrichment classes are offered to students who wish to further their understanding of a module and who have experienced difficulties during the academic semester. However the enrichment sessions are held in regions where there are adequate student numbers per module. Website Support RBS has a wealth of electronic academic support resources available online which all students are able to utilise through their MyRegent student portal. Resources include past Examination papers, videos, workshop presentations as well as access to a range of academic materials available through the library portal on the website. Our Website provides constant guidance to the student from registration to graduation. RBS students are also invited to discuss study matters with other students both nationally and internationally, via discussion threads on the website. Videos to support learning The CTL has introduced a series of videos that is intended to complement student learning at Regent Business School. Videos are available for selected modules on the Master of Business Administration programme. Examination Venues are: Examinations may be written in Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, East London, Polokwane, Nelspruit, Windhoek (Namibia), Lusaka (Zambia), and Manzini (Swaziland). Other Examination venues will be considered based on student demand. 3 4

6 Bachelor of Commerce Degree The REGENT Business School Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) Degree is a 3 year programme that focuses on decision making, management and technology within the business arena and is designed to give the student a strong foundation and the essential skills required for a successful career in business management. The BCom Degree equips students with both theoretical and practical exposure preparing them for a professional, commercial environment. 7 Diploma in Human Resource Management The REGENT Business School distance and supported learning 2 year Diploma in Human Resource Management (DHRM) provides a comprehensive overview of contemporary human resource management theory and practice. This programme is created to develop a student s key competencies required for the effective management of human resource issues. 8 Diploma in Financial Management The Diploma in Financial Management (DIFM) is a 2 year programme that provides an overview of the necessary skills, knowledge and techniques to manage finances in the public or business sector context. statements; assets register; ratio analysis; business investment; financing decisions; current asset management; dividend and dividend policy. 9 Higher Certificate in Healthcare Services Management The Higher Certificate in Healthcare Services Management (HCHCSM) is a 1 year programme intended for healthcare practitioners and related professionals such as medical practioners, nurses, physiotherapists and optometrists, as well as non medical persons interested in pursuing management careers in healthcare services in the private and public sector. The programme serves a dual purpose: school leavers will be empowered with initial management training and professionals in healthcare, who occupy managerial positions but have no formal management training will acquire managerial training and competencies. 10 Higher Certificate in Business Management The Higher Certificate in Business Management (HCIBM) is a 1 year programme that provides an overview of the essentials of business management theory and practice. It is designed to provide a convenient and appropriate avenue into business management studies for those individuals whose objective is to gain employment or successfully climb the corporate ladder. This Certificate is an excellent way for students to broaden their understanding of the intrinsic functions of business management such as finance, communications and marketing. In addition, the fundamentals of Business Communication and Management Principles will train entrepreneurs to be effective in their communication, leadership and management style. 13 Higher Certificate in Islamic Finance Banking and Law The Higher Certificate in Islamic Finance, Banking and Law (HCIFBL) is a one year programme that aims to equip students with knowledge on a wide spectrum of Islamic Finance, Banking and relevant legal issues in order to create a better understanding of the practicality of Islam Finance, Banking and law in a secular state. Reference will be made to South African law as a comparison to Islamic Law. It will thus be an enriching experience to both those with and without Islamic (Shari ah) knowledge and to both Muslim and non-muslim students. This certificate is an excellent way for practioners in finance and those wanting to enter the field, to obtain the basic knowledge and skill in Islamic finance, banking, business and law. This course will enable students to seek appropriate employment in the proliferation of Islamic Banks and Islamic Windows in conventional banks in South Africa and abroad and/or to further their studies in these and related fields. It will thus be an enriching experience to both those with and without Islamic (Shari ah) knowledge and to both Muslim and non-muslim students. 14 Master of Business Administration (MBA) : General The Master of Business Administration Degree (MBA) is the world s best known and most widely recognised management education qualification. It has become one of the most sought after qualification in today s corporate world as a prerequisite to most top management positions as well as for successful career progression. 15 Postgraduate Diploma in Management The Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PG Dip Man) is a 1 year qualification that enables students with relevant work experience and appropriate qualifications to further develop their functional and reflective competencies in management, leadership and administration. The programme aims to develop an integrated conceptual understanding, synthesis and critical application of specialised qualitative and quantitative issues in management. The qualification is directed towards students having relevant work experience and occupying middle and senior management positions and who have completed a bachelors degree or equivalent qualification. This qualification will enable students to develop in-depth, discipline specific skills and applied competence in the private and public sectors that will provide opportunities for personal intellectual growth, more purposeful employment and making a contribution to society. 16 Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree The Bachelor of Commerce Honours (BCom Hons) degree is a 1 year programme that seeks to develop capacity in managers or persons who are aspiring to hold management responsibilities within the commercial sector. The programme enables students to develop integrated functional and reflective competences in business and general management by examining issues relating to Marketing Management, Human Resource and Industrial Relations Management, Strategic Management, Financial Management, as well as undertaking research directed towards business and management, this provides students with cutting edge advanced management skills by exposing them to the functional areas of business and management at a postgraduate level, and ensures that they are prepared for the challenges of the global economy. Graduates will be able to: Analyse and solve managerial challenges. Demonstrate competency in the management of private enterprises, departments or sections of organisations to the benefit of all stakeholders. Interpret and critically evaluate evidence and data objectively. Recognise and respond to change within organisations.
