3 HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SHELTER INFORMATION In te event of a community emergency, Hillsboroug County as emergency selters for residents and visitors available as a last resort. Become familiar wit te selter information provided and make sure everyone in your ouseold knows te following selter facts: Selters are opened on an as-needed basis. Selter openings may vary wit eac emergency. Pet friendly selters require current vaccination records for dogs and cats. Never go to a selter unless local officials ave announced it is open. Current selter information is available from local radio and television stations, and te Hillsboroug County InfoLine at (813) More information is available on te county website, DOG AND CAT FRIENDLY SHELTERS Hillsboroug County offers four dog and cat-friendly selters, indicated on te selter list of tis guide. Seltering your pet: Provide proof of current license and vaccination Pet must be in an appropriate pet crate Provide all items required for your pet You are responsible for te care of your pet wile in te selter Coabitation of pets and owners is not permitted If you are unable to meet tese requirements, please make oter arrangements to selter your pet. SPECIAL NEEDS Hillsboroug County provides a selter program for tose residents requiring special medical related care. Special needs selters will be available for persons requiring more skilled medical care tan available in a public selter but not requiring an acute care facility suc as a ospital. If tis type of extended care is needed, contact te Hillsboroug InfoLine at or te Hillsboroug County Healt Department at (813) to be considered for registration into tis program.

5 USING YOUR COUNTY MAP 1. Locate were you live and work on te map. 2. Determine weter you are in an evacuation area, and if so, wat level (color). 3. If you are in an evacuation area, or live in a mobile ome/rv, decide were you will go if ordered to evacuate. Your coices include: Home of a relative or friend outside te evacuation zone Hotel/motel outside te evacuation zone (make arrangements early) Go to a public selter As a last resort leave te area entirely 4. If you must go to a public selter, use your county map to decide wic one is convenient. Make sure you verify te selter is open before you go. HURRICANE THREAT Te colored areas on te map are vulnerable to storm surge. Storm surge is produced by water being pused towards te sore by te force of te winds moving around te storm. Storm surge creates a pat of destruction, wiping out structures as it rapidly surges inland and ten recedes. Tis is a life treatening situation for anyone wo ignores mandatory evacuation orders and stays in vulnerable areas. Hurricanes are categorized on a scale of 1 to 5, depending on wind strengt and destructive power. Te evacuation zones are color coded to designate te level of storm surge likely to occur. Eac colored area corresponds to an evacuation zone and eac zone is given a letter designation, A-E. Evacuations will be ordered by zone based upon te projected storm surge. If you live in an area ordered to evacuate, gater your family/pets and emergency supplies, secure your ome and leave immediately. Failure to obey a mandatory evacuation order is a violation of state and local laws. Note: All persons living in mobile omes/rvs must evacuate for all mandatory evacuation orders, regardless of were you are located in te county.
6 NOAA WEATHER RADIO A NOAA weater radio can provide you wit valuable urricane information as well as vital warning information for tornadoes, severe tunderstorms and oter dangerous weater. It also broadcasts warning and post-event information for all types of azards suc as cemical releases and significant matters of public safety. Hillsboroug County Frequency MH Z, SAME Code FLOOD PREVENTION ASSISTANCE For unincorporated County residents, staff from te Engineering and Environmental Services, Hazard Mitigation Program may make a site visit, upon request, to assist property owners wit flooding and stormwater drainage information to address site-specific flooding concerns. Tis service is provided at no carge. For additional information on flooding, flood insurance, flood zones, retrofitting, or elevation certificates, you may contact te Hazard Mitigation Program office at Elevation certificates on file for areas witin unincorporated Hillsboroug County may be obtained in writing: Hazard Mitigation Program, Engineering & Environmental Services, Public Works Department, County Center, P.O. Te purpose of te Post Disaster Redevelopment Plan (PDRP) is to provide te County and cities wit countywide guidance for local decision-making and actions during te difficult recovery following a major disaster. Te PDRP details actions tat need to be taken to speed te recovery process and make our community more disaster resilient in te future. It also identifies actions we need to take now before a disaster strikes in order to make sure tat appens.
