1 Gabrenya - 1 Studying Indigenous Psychology Movements in East Asia: Complications, Confusions, Conundrums and the Search for Clarity William K. Gabrenya Jr. Florida Tech, Melbourne, Florida USA In this talk, I summarize my experiences in studying indigenous psychology movements in Taiwan and other parts of East Asia, present my theoretical orientation, and provide some research results. I focus on the complex nature of scientific movements as well as the complications introduced when the researcher is embedded; the confusion that results from obtaining at once too much information in a cultural milieu that is too little understood; the social, ethical and personal conundrums that the researcher may face in such projects; and ultimately the search for a clear understanding of a social/scientific movement in a culturally distant society. Finally, I ask the seminar participants for their suggestions for future research in the area.
