James Nixon-Smith, Mr Rental, CEO I HAVE BEEN in business for just over two years and in that time have gone from being the smallest franchise in New Zealand to the largest. I was made redundant from my job in software development and did a lot of investigation before I bought into Mr Rental. It s a very busy business to run, there is a lot to it, and you have to pay close attention to the detail, but the system works, as long as you follow it. When you sign someone up to a rental agreement, they are paying you every week. You have constant cash fl ow. That s the strength of the system. The recurring revenue means that you can go on a twoweek holiday to Europe, and as long as you have someone taking care of the direct debits, you are still making money. A strong, well-trained team is essential. Given that it s such a busy job, it s not possible to do everything yourself, therefore you have to rely on your team and the better the team is, the better the store will perform. I have also had huge input from my Mr Rental business coach, which has no doubt been a factor in my success. 3 Our story The Mr Rental tale began in 1983 when founders Glen and Kerrianne Hickman moved to Bribie Island, just north of Brisbane, in Queensland, Australia. Together they opened a video library and rented TVs and VCRs as a complementary service. In no time, the home entertainment rentals were outstripping videos and by 1991 they had opened their fi rst Mr Rental store. For 10 years, this enterprising husband and wife team built their business in their local community, developing and optimising operations and systems. In 2001 they took the bold move to start franchising, with a vision for Mr Rental to become the world s fi rst choice in home appliance renting. Within two years they had over 30 stores in Australia and New Zealand, renting home appliances, furniture and offi ce equipment to thousands of happy customers. Today the Mr Rental group services thousands of customers in Australia and New Zealand, with a product offering that encompasses the latest in climate control, computers, fi tness, furniture, gaming consoles, home entertainment systems, and kitchen and laundry appliances. Glen and Kerrianne remain Mr Rental Board members and their original vision holds true: the customer comes fi rst. The aim is always to make life simpler for customers, with products offered at affordable prices and exceptional customer service. I WAS NOT really looking to be part of a franchise when I discovered Mr Rental, but I liked the business model. The recurring revenue was the key bit: you make one sale and it keeps on paying you. I have made some awesome friends in the group, which means when you have a problem, there are around 70 [fellow franchisees] you can ring for advice, who have experienced the same problem, and you deal with it together. I have enjoyed that side of it, and also the support of a head offi ce you can ring anytime that is something you don t get in small business. Mr Rental also offers a good work/life balance. My family is a major priority for me, spending time with them, and I have achieved this because I have managers in each store. I trained them to the level required, and I myself have now moved up to a more strategic, guiding role in the business. The marketing team, based at the NSO, also assists franchisees with tools to drive local area marketing to boost trade. That said, you need to be active in the business, in order to be successful, but I get paid every day whether we are open or not, including weekends and public holidays. I also require only low staff numbers, which cuts down on overheads. I bought my Townsville store in 2010 and my Wide Bay store, in Hervey Bay, in 2011 and am looking forward to buying another territory in the not too distant future. Originally from Sydney, I was looking to get out of the corporate rat race when I discovered Mr Rental. It was the right decision. My wife and I have doubled our net worth in three years and, lifestyle-wise, it s good. We have young children, aged three and six, and the business allows me to spend time with them, and do the school run. I was a fourth-generation farmer with no retail background when I came to Mr Rental, but they offer training and ongoing support to help you achieve your business goals. They are a company who listens. Being part of a network is also a plus, as there are always other franchisees I can call for advice or ideas. Being a fi ve-days-a-week operation, the business has also allowed us to spend time with our children, and watch them grow up. For us, Mr Rental has been a good family business. 7 Timeline 12 steps to Mr Rental franchising success Interested in becoming a Mr Rental franchisee? We realise that investing in a franchise is a big commitment. As such, we have developed a simple program to ensure the process is clearly defined. STEP 1 Let s talk We ll arrange an initial discussion with the Mr Rental Network Development Manager to brief you on the business. STEP 2 Put it in writing Visit the Mr Rental website and download our Franchise Offer pack, or request it via . Complete and submit your application. STEP 3 Let s meet Meet with the Network Development Manger to discuss the Mr Rental opportunity. STEP 4 Review disclosure Review of your Draft Disclosure package. STEP 5 Secure your territory Place a fully refundable deposit on your territory of interest, which secures your chosen territory while you do your due diligence. STEP 6 Plans in motion Demographic information, benchmarking data and business planning template is issued for your review and completion. STEP 7 Business planning Contact appropriate franchisees and department heads for assistance with preparing your business plan. STEP 8 Site search Start preliminary investigations for an appropriate site in your chosen territory. STEP 9 Countdown begins Arrange a meeting with your Business Coach to review the countdown to opening checklist. Submit your draft business plan for approval by the board. STEP 10 Sign off procedures You will attend a face-to-face meeting with the Mr Rental Board for fi nal approval. Following that, you will be issued with the fi nal copy of your franchise agreement for your sign-off. STEP 11 Training Day Prior to opening your store, you will complete the Mr Rental Training Program, which involves two weeks in Brisbane and two weeks in-store. STEP 12 Open for business Time to welcome your Mr Rental customers.
