1 Engineering I to Engineering II The Application Process Every student in ENGINEERING I must enter their program choices in SOLAR no later than April 4th, This includes reinstated students, transfer students, as well as those of you who may be completing Eng I courses this summer. You will need to apply directly through SOLAR (via MUGSI) from March 6 th to April 4 th You must enter four (4) Engineering II program choices IN ORDER of preference, from your first choice to your fourth choice. A response will be available in MUGSI by May 23 rd, Requirements for Entry into Engineering II Programs S.A. of 4.0 or higher & successful completion of 31 units of the required core courses: Chem. 1E03 Engineer 1A00, 1C03, 1D04, 1P03 Matls 1M03 Math 1ZA3, Math 1ZB3 & Math 1ZC3 Physics 1D03, 1E03 ** The completion of your complementary studies electives (6 units) is not required for admission into Engineering II, however they must be completed prior to your final year to be eligible for graduation ** Admission Cut-offs for Engineering II A minimum Sessional Average (S.A.) of 4.0 is required for entry into Level II Engineering programs. The cut-offs for entry into specific Level II programs will vary depending on the demand for that specific program. Admission to some Level II programs will be based on a point system as outlined in the Undergraduate Calendar. (See last page F.A.Q s) Program allocation is determined by grades earned in the September April 2012 academic session only. All grades (including electives) are used counted in your SA. Summer school grades are not used in the calculation of points and therefore cannot ever change your program allocation.

If you would like to be considered for the Management, Society or International Studies programs (5 Yr Programs) you need to INDICATE YOUR INTEREST ONLY ONCE in your rankings. Summer school registration will begin in SOLAR in mid-march Please check the Master Timetable for this information and course times. Term 1: April 30 th - June 15 th Term 2: June 18 th - August 3 rd

3 Program Ranking; Do s and Don ts Do use this as an example on how to list your Level 2 Program Choices. 1. Mechanical Engineering and Management 2. Civil Engineering and Society 3. Materials Engineering 4. Chemical Engineering In reviewing your rankings, I will assume the following: You DO want to be in a five year program. Your first choice for a five year degree is Management but if you don t get into management, you would like to be in Society. What this tells us is that you would ideally like to be in the 5 year Mechanical Engineering & Management program. It also lets me know that you are interested in Management combined with the other programs listed should you not get into your first choice of Mechanical Engineering. This also says that your second choice is Civil preferably combined with Management but if you do not meet the Management cut off you would like to be considered for Civil & Society. If you do not meet the cut off for Civil, based on your rankings above, we would determine if you met the cut off for Materials combined with either Management or more likely Society. If you did not get into Materials, we would then assess your admission to your 4 th choice of Chemical Engineering and Society. What NOT to do. Yes, I did get this last year! 1. Mechanical Engineering and Management 2. Mechanical Engineering and Society 3. Mechanical Engineering and International Studies 4. Mechanical Engineering This tells us that you want Mechanical Engineering only and that you will take it with any of the 5 year options or on its own! If you don t meet the cut off for Mechanical Engineering, you have given me no second, third or fourth choice!

4 F.A.Q s Q. How will you calculate my cut off points? The following formula used to determine cut-offs: POINTS = Sessional Average (S.A) multiplied by # of registered units in term 1 & term 2 only. 6.5 S.A. x 37 units = points 6.5 S.A. x 34 units = 221 points 6.5 S.A x 31 units = points Q. What if I am taking less than 31 units; how do you calculate my points? If you are registered in less than 31 units your S.A. will be multiplied by the minimum requirements of 31 units to determine your points for Engineering II program cut-offs. Q. What happens if I have earned the points/s.a necessary for my program but still have to complete a Level 1 course in the summer? If, after the calculation, you have earned the points/s.a for your program of choice, but are going to be completing a required course in the summer, we will hold a spot for you in the program, pending successful completion of the required course(s) in the summer. Q. When and how will I know which program I have been accepted into? Decisions will be available on MUGSI by May 23 rd, If you are completing required courses in summer school, an will be sent to your McMaster address (not hotmail or g-mail) after grades have been received, so make sure Mac is enabled & that you are checking messages! Q. Can I use my summer school grades to increase my points so that I can get into a different program? No, summer school grades will not be used in the calculations and you may not use summer school grades to increase your points or cut off. Summer school is merely an opportunity to complete your course requirements. Officially, summer school grades will be included in your Cumulative Average for the academic session. Please see Sally Williams in JHE A-214 regarding individual academic circumstances. Q. Do grades earned in complementary electives count towards my points? Yes, grades for ALL courses (electives, upper level courses, etc.) taken from September 2011 to April 2012 will be used in the calculation of your sessional average and in the points calculation. Q. 5 Learn about the different Engineering Programs Level 1 Information Fair Thursday, February 16, :30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Engineering Technology Building Some engineering departments will be holding Information Nights over the next few weeks to help students finalize their Level 2 program choices. Be sure to look for posters in the eng buildings with the dates & times!
