1 FIRE PROTECTION EDUCATION CLASS 2 CLASS TITLE: Two-Way Wired Emergency Communication Systems (ECS), and Wireless Emergency Responders Radio Coverage Systems (ERRCS) CLASS GENERAL INFORMATION: 1 full day (8-Hour) in-class training. Continuing Education Units (CEU) 8 CEU units accredited by ESA/NTS will be granted to all participants upon completion of the class. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. CLASS DESCRIPTION Code requirements for the installation and performance of one-way and two-way Emergency Communication Systems (ECS) are specified in NFPA 72 Chapter 24. This class will focus on specific code requirements for both wired and wireless in-buildings two-way emergency communication systems, such as radio enhancement systems, areas-of-refuge, elevator-landings and stairway communication systems. These systems are required by building and fire codes such as IBC, IFC and NFPA 5000 and are installed and perform per NFPA standards. This class will discuss specific code requirements from the AHJ s enforcement perspective. Associated terms such as pathway survivability levels (NFPA 72 chapter 12), supervision, and intelligibility, and examples from actual permit plans will be presented and discussed. ERRCS: Reliable communication between first responders (Police and Fire) during emergency events is essential to provide better management and control of the event. For many years, these systems were based on wired technology such as phone-jacks and emergency (Fire Wardens) phones; however, based on first responders feedback, it was determined that they prefer to use their personal portable radios for communication during emergency events. Emergency Responders Radio Coverage Systems (ERRCS) were first required by the 2009 IFC and associated NFPA standards 2009 NFPA-5000 and the 2010 NFPA-72. This presentation will discuss and clarify current IBC and IFC codes and specific NFPA installation and performance requirements from the perspective of enforcing agencies/ahj. Current Editions of NFPA , NFPA Annex F, IFC/IBC-2012 and CFC/CBC-2013 will be presented Future Editions of NFPA , NFPA , NFPA 1221, IFC/IBC-2015 and CFC/CBC-2016 will be discussed. Fire Protection Education Class /23/2015

2 LEARNING OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES 1. After attending this session participants should be able to define and understand the differences between One-Way and Two-Way wired and wireless Emergency Communication Systems. 2. Identify the various types of Two-Way Emergency Communication Systems included in NFPA 72 Chapter 24 and determine in which buildings these systems are required based on the 2012-IBC. 3. Define and understand ECS associated code terms such as Pathway Survivability Levels, Voice Intelligibility, and System Supervision. 4. Understand and learn how to apply specific NFPA 72 Chapters 12 and 24 installation and performance requirements to new ECS projects, based on enforcement agencies/ahj s requirements. 5. Understand the specific 2012 IFC/IBC requirements for Emergency Responders Radio Coverage (ERRC) versus Emergency Responders Radio coverage Systems (ERRCS) in various types of existing and new buildings. 6. Learn how to apply the current NFPA Annex-F and NFPA Chapters 12 and 24, installation and performance standards to new ERRCS projects based on enforcement agencies requirements. 7. Discuss new requirements in NFPA related to Two-Way ECS and ERRCS per NFPA : Standard for the Installation, Maintenance, and Use of Emergency Services Communications Systems Fire Protection Education Class /23/2015
