Stress is directly linked to a number of somatic complaints, such as insomnia, muscle tension, aches and pains, joint pain, headaches/migraines, gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, constipation, and nausea), fatigue, loss of sex drive, high blood pressure, weight loss or gain, hormonal disturbances, a compromised immune system, asthma, and recurrent skin problems (acne, eczema, psoriasis, etc.). Stress reduction programs reduce somatic complaints, which can account for as much as 25% of primary care visits in the country. 17
