2 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Business Systems Specialist HERA GRADE Grade 7 DEPARTMENT: IT Services REPORTS TO: IT Services Manager JOB PURPOSE Working as part of the team responsible for the information technology provision across the University the Business Systems Specialist provides development, support and maintenance of all business systems. The post holder will contribute to the University s strategic aims by ensuring information security, excellent customer service and the development of reporting tools to provide key business and management information. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES Maintain, develop and ensure backup and security of the University s critical business systems which include student information, finance, HR, customer relationship and library systems. Arrange and implement developmental upgrades for these business systems as required, in consultation with appropriate departments. Regularly review business processes with relevant colleagues and implement improvements or more efficient methodologies. Develop a comprehensive range of reporting tools to enhance the University s ability to monitor key performance indicators and its business intelligence. Provide an exceptional high quality service to all staff users relating to business systems and other IT Systems as appropriate. Maintain and develop relationships with system suppliers to keep up to date with best practices and ensure good service and best value. Attend user groups, workshops and conferences as appropriate.

3 Provide technical support during the preparation and submission of statutory returns (e.g. HECFE and HESA etc.). Specific project work using database, active directory and networking knowledge to enhance the University s business intelligence. Maintain the University s disaster recovery and business continuity plans for all business systems and other IT systems as appropriate. Author, review and update accurate and comprehensive documentation relating to business systems processes, procedures and best practices. Be prepared to work out of hours as required. Monitor emerging technologies and provide recommendations for future developments within the University. BUDGETARY/FINANCIAL/RESOURCE RESPONSIBILITIES To ensure the University s IT resources including the business systems are maintained and developed in line with the University s Corporate Plan. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION - BUSINESS SYSTEMS SPECIALIST / Candidate Assessment, or P* Educational and Vocational Qualifications Evidence of Continuous Professional Development in order to maintain knowledge of current developments A Certified in SQL server 2005/2008 A Experience and Knowledge Experienced and/or certified in SQL server 2005/2008 A Working knowledge of SQL Reporting Services Working knowledge of Windows 2003/2008 and Active Directory Working knowledge of information security issues Understanding of the Data Protection Act and other relevant Acts relating to information security Experience of supporting a range of systems including: Corero Resources finance system Tribal SITS system (with evision) student information system Bond International Professional HR system Donor Strategy Alumni system Moodle Virtual learning environment Knowledge of other programming or scripting languages to include PHP, XML, html, javascript and MySQL Knowledge of Visual Basic Scripting Key Competencies Excellent SQL scripting skills, including T-SQL Good decision making skills with the ability to understand when decisions will impact on other systems and users Ability to tackle and resolve complex technical issues

6 GENERAL INFORMATION Terms and Conditions of Appointment On appointment, the successful candidate will receive a full statement of terms and conditions for Professional Services staff. Duties: The duties and responsibilities are outlined in the job description contained in the post details pack. Starting Date: This post is available on an indefinite basis from July Hours of Work: The hours of work for this post are 37 per week. The postholder will be required to undertake out-of-hours or weekend working as required. Salary: This post is on an incremental salary scale. The salary for this post is Grade 7 which is from 30,424 to 36,298 per annum. Please note that it is the expectation that candidates will be appointed at the bottom of the salary scale. Annual Leave: The leave year runs from 1 January to 31 December. There is an annual holiday entitlement of 21 days (increasing to 25 days after 5 years service at the start of the leave year) plus 8 statutory days. In addition, the University may grant up to 4 concessionary days leave per year when the University is closed. Superannuation: This post is superannuable under the Local Government Pension Scheme. Interview Expenses If you are required to travel more than 25 miles to the University for interview, reasonable travel and incidental expenses incurred in attending the interview will be reimbursed, subject to prior approval. Applicants travelling from outside the UK will be paid expenses from arrival in the UK. You will be required to provide receipts for expenses claimed. If you are offered the position and decline the offer, expenses will not be reimbursed. Qualifications Candidates invited for interview will be required to bring their original certificate as proof of they hold the qualifications listed as essential on the person specification for this role. Eligibility to Work in the United Kingdom If you are invited for interview you will be asked to provide original documentary evidence of your eligibility to work in the UK.
