15 EDFacts Initiative EDFacts is a U. S. Department of Education (ED) initiative to collect, analyze, report on and promote the use of highquality, kindergarten through grade 12 (K 12) performance data for use in education planning, policymaking, and management and budget decision making to improve outcomes for students. EDFacts centralizes data provided by state education agencies, local education agencies and schools, and provides users with the ability to easily analyze and report on submitted data. This initiative has reduced the reporting burden for state and local data producers, and has streamlined data collection, analysis and reporting functions at the federal, state and local levels.
16 Purposes of EDFacts? Collect and report robust, timely and accurate K 12 data for improved education planning, policymaking, management and outcomes. Reduce the data burden for states, districts and schools, and streamline data processes at the federal, state, district and school levels. Encourage data usage by providing data providers and users with analytical and reporting tools to produce preformatted and user-defined data reports. Offer technical resources and assistance to support data providers and data users.

20 Common Core of Data (CCD) A program of the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics that annually collects fiscal and non-fiscal data about all public schools, public school districts and state education agencies in the United States. The data are supplied by SEA officials and include information that describes schools and school districts, including name, address, and phone number; descriptive information about students and staff, including demographics; and fiscal data, including revenues and current expenditures. The Common Core of Data (CCD- NonFiscal Survey) became part of the EDFacts data collection in school year (SY) SEAs submit non-fiscal information about all public schools, school districts and state education agencies, including state, district and school contact information, as well as descriptive data on students and staff.
21 EDFacts Data Collections Tools States and school districts submit data to EDFacts using one of the following three vehicles: The EDEN Submission System (ESS) collects a core set of key, K 12 performance data from state education agencies annually. State education agencies provide EDFacts data annually on approximately 180 data groups to the Department using the EDEN Submission System (ESS). The ESS is an electronic system that facilitates the efficient and timely transmission of data from state education agencies to the Department. Data submitted through the ESS are provided to meet federally mandated program data requirements, Elementary and Secondary Education Act data requirements, and data to support the Government Performance and Results Act, among others. The EDFacts Metadata and Process System (EMAPS) is an online collection tool that collects supplementary metadata and information from state education agencies as needed. EMAPS is intended to obtain state data that supplement, not duplicate, data transmitted through the ESS. An online survey of local education agencies (LEAs) collects data from the Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC). Collections transmitted through this online survey are intended to obtain data that supplement, not duplicate, data transmitted through the ESS.
