North America : (toll-free); (direct) Europe, Middle East and Africa : Asia-Pacific : Latin America : What is a page/window? A Window is an individual frame within the Platts on the Net powered by RealTick main application frame. This individual frame can be created through the Design menu. If you open the Design menu, you will see all the window types for which you are currently permissioned. A Platts on the Net window behaves like an ordinary Microsoft Windows window. It can be maximized, restored, or closed, using the standard Microsoft Windows buttons in the upper right hand corner. To use Platts on the Net windows as efficiently as possible, it is a good idea to save your Favorite windows. A Page is a saved arrangement of individual Platts on the Net module windows. The Page contains all instructions for drawing the windows and requesting data to display in the windows. Any arrangement of windows within Platts on the Net can be saved as a Page. Platts on the Net only displays one page at a time. When opening another saved Page or starting a new Page, a dialog box may appear, prompting you to save the changes to your current Page, if you have not already done so. If you hit No, the new Page will open, but the arrangement of windows you were just looking at will be lost. Of course, this may be fine. It is always up to you! Before opening a new Page, it is a good idea to take stock of the arrangement of windows as you have them. If you would like to save your present arrangement, but also keep the previous page you originally opened, make sure that you save the modified arrangement as a different Page name What is a default page? Why does the same page keep appearing? Why doesn't a page appear? Platts on the Net powered by RealTick can be set to automatically load a certain page when Platts on the Net is started. 5 I have too many windows open. If I have to close them, how can I get them back later? You can save each individual application window as a Favorite. Platts on the Net powered by RealTick organizes Favorites by their window types; e.g. Chart Favorites are kept separately from Minder Favorites. By right-clicking on the Toolbar Button that corresponds to the window type, you will see a list of your Favorites within that window type. If you have no Favorites of that type, right clicking will only show you a legend that reads Chart, MarketMinder, etc. To save a window as a Favorite: 1. Highlight the window by left-clicking once on the title bar. 2. If you have a Favorites menu, pull it down and select Add to Favorites. Otherwise, pull down the Window menu and select Add to Favorites. If you do not have a Favorites menu, you may need to upgrade your Platts on the Net powered by Realtick. The Design choice opens a menu that displays the types of windows the user can create. Under the Menu bar on Platts on the Net, the user will have a Toolbar. The Toolbar displays a button with an icon for each window the user may configure. If you roll your mouse pointer over a button, a small box will appear to tell you what window that button can create. 7 What specifications are needed for my computer to run Platts on the Net powered by RealTick properly? Poorly maintained hardware or a slow connection can hamper Platts on the Net performance, so please compare your computer's processor, memory (RAM), and operating system, as well as the equipment and speed of your Internet connection to the suggested specifications below. Please Note: Specifications may change over time and in order to ensure continual optimal performance of your Platts on the Net please be sure to maintain and upgrade your equipment and connections. System Requirements Internet Connection System Operating System Video RAM Broadband* Ping times consistently under < 250ms 1 Ghz Pentium 3 or 4 Processor 128 MB RAM (Minimum) / 512MB RAM (Recommended) Windows XP or Windows 2000 SVGA or better * Broadband includes cable, satellite (symmetric) and microwave Internet connections I've installed Platts on the Net powered by RealTick, and I want to run it on my computer's multiple monitors. When I maximize Platts on the Net, however, Platts on the Net only takes up all of one monitor. In Windows Restore mode, click-and-drag the borders of Platts on the Net to expand the Platts on the Net window across all of your monitors. If you cannot manually expand the window past one monitor, right-click on your Task Bar and left-click on Cascade Windows to reset your display properties. This will reset all open windows (including non- Platts on the Net applications). How to click-and-drag the borders of Platts on the Net: Any standard Microsoft Windows window will only take up one of your monitors when you click the Maximize button, even when running multiple monitors. Click the Restore button or double leftclick the Platts on the Net title bar to return to a custom size, e.g. between Maximized and Minimized. Then, you can click-and-drag the borders of Platts on the Net to expand the Platts on the Net window across all monitors. 1. Point your mouse on the bottom border of the Platts on the Net window. When you are over the correct area, your mouse pointer will change to a double-headed arrow. 2. Hold down your left mouse button, and drag the mouse downward. You will see a ghost image of your border drag along with it. 6. Release the left mouse button. Platts on the Net will expand to the line you dragged. You may use the same technique to expand Platts on the Net upwards or to the left. You may also move the entire application window around your desktop by left-clicking and holding the Platts on the Net title bar and dragging and dropping in the desired location What is the recommended Internet connection specification for my computer to run Platts on the Net powered by RealTick properly? Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) needs to demonstrate that you can ping and tracert from your computer to beacon.taltrade.com in less than 250ms. Your ISP will understand what this means and be able to help you with this. How to Check Your Internet Connection: Note: This assumes your computer is turned on, and is connected to the Internet. 1. Click the Start button. A menu will appear. 2. From the Start menu, click Programs. Another menu will appear. 3. From the Programs menu, click MS-DOS Prompt. If you do not see MS-DOS Prompt, click Command Prompt. The menus will disappear, and the MS-DOS Prompt window will open. 4. In the MS-DOS Prompt window, type ping beacon.taltrade.com. 5. Press Enter. This will run a program which sends 4 test packets of information to a computer named beacon.taltrade.com. This computer is reachable through the Internet. 6. You will see the line Pinging htmltrader1.taltrade.com [ ] with 32 bytes of data. 7. After that, you will see 4 lines. If the lines read like this: Destination host unreachable OR Reply from (some IP address): Destination host unreachable Then your ISP's routers are unable to connect to our routers, and information cannot be transmitted your servers. You should contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance. 8. If any of the lines read like this: Request timed out One of the test packets did not complete its trip between your computer and our computer. The more lines that show this message, the more data your connection is losing. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance. 9. If the lines read: Reply from : bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=127

The test packet successfully made it from your computer to beacon.taltrade.com, and back to your computer again. The time in which each packet made its trip is located on each line after time= and is measured in milliseconds. In the example above, the test packet went round-trip in 1 millisecond. Any time under 250 milliseconds will allow Platts on the Net to communicate with the data servers. If the times are varying, or are above regularly above 300 milliseconds, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance. They will best be able to diagnose where the data is slowed How do I configure Platts on the Net powered by RealTick to pass through a firewall or I have to configure Platts on the Net to pass through a proxy server. Since many Internet Service Provider's (ISP) use firewalls and proxy servers to restrict the traffic through their sites, Platts on the Net does use certain ports and settings to flow through the restrictions. If you are going through a firewall, Platts on the Net does not need additional configuration. Instead, your network or Internet Service Provider's firewall must be configured to allow outgoing connections on ports 80, 443, and Platts on the Net connects to 2 servers simultaneously on port 1838 (recombiner for data, news server for news stories and returns traffic on those same connections. No new connections are initiated from our servers back to the client. It is not necessary to configure these ports for inbound connections from TAL Data servers). Primary IP addresses: * * * * * * * Secondary IP addresses: * * For Windows 2000 and XP operating systems Platts on the Net uses the proxy settings in the Internet Explorer browser found in Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN Settings. Platts on the Net will send port 80 and 443 (http and https) to an http proxy server. If you are going through a proxy server, you need to configure Platts on the Net. In the tal.ini file, add the line ProxyServer="IP address of the proxy": "http port" in the [PERMCACHE] section. For example, if the proxy server's IP address is and http traffic goes through port 80, then it will read ProxyServer= :80 Platts on the Net does support the use of a socks proxy for port 1838 traffic. It will not, however, support authentication. If using a socks proxy the following line will be added under the [TALIPC] section of the TAL.ini file: SocksServer=host name or ip address[:port] Institutions may be using a configuration script for the proxy settings. The script specifies rules for certain types of connections and internet traffic on that network. There is no way for us to know what is in the configuration script and there are many possible configurations. In these cases contact the network admin for more information on the network's requirements What other software can I or should I run on my machine?

You definitely should not run any other quote software that gets data from another site. The more data you are pulling into your machine, the slower all of the data will be displayed. You may be able to safely run software that communicates with our servers in the way that Platts on the Net powered by RealTick communicates with our servers. However, support for those programs must come from the company producing them, and we reserve the right to shut off any program that damages our servers. We feel it is better to deny one person access through permissions than to deny hundreds because of a damaged server. Besides these, most common applications should be safe to run simultaneously with Platts on the Net, e.g. Microsoft Office suite.

When I try to run Platts on the Net powered by RealTick TALDDE, I receive an MSG_APP error message. If your machine does not have all of the current Critical Updates from Microsoft Windows Update ( you will not be able to run TALDDE. You will receive an error in your MSG_APP indicating failure to create an object of type MSXML2.DomDocument. This error appears to specifically refer to MSXML. However, it actually refers to a class that is registered only by the Critical Update for Internet Explorer 6. The DomDocument class happens to be located in the file msxml3.dll, which is why the error message is worded that way. However, DomDocument is not necessarily installed by any of the Microsoft updates that are referred to as "XML" updates. If you get an error message referencing this class, you need the IE6 critical update as well as all XML updates. The only way to ensure that all of these updates, as well as all of their dependencies, are properly installed and registered is to visit and download all critical updates that are recommended for your system When I try to logon, I get a message that indicates a "Permissions URL Problem. " If you try to logon and get a "Permissions URL Problem" or a "PermsURL" message, it can mean one of the following; 1. Your Internet connection may simply be too slow or your ISP's routers may not be able to reach Platts on the Net powered by RealTick routers. 2. You have typed in a username or domain unknown to our servers. Please recheck the username and domain information you have entered, and make sure that you have not entered any extra spaces or other marks When I try to run Platts on the Net powered by RealTick, it behaves strangely, and my MSG_APP fills with error messages. Installation type not specified always means that Platts on the Net cannot find and read its initialization file. If Platts on the Net cannot find and read its initialization file, then Platts on the Net will not run properly. If Platts on the Net cannot find its initialization file, the most likely causes are that Platts on the Net was not installed properly, or that certain critical files on your computer have been changed. In either case, the best solution is to reboot your computer, then reinstall Platts on the Net. If you still have the PlattsOnTheNet84153.zip installation program on your desktop, you may run it to reinstall Platts on the Net. If you cannot find PlattsOnTheNet84153.zip, you will have to download it again. Platts on the Net link to PlattsOnTheNet84153.zip or cut and paste the following url into your browser: I was running Platts on the Net powered by RealTick, and got the message "Administrative logoff," and Platts on the Net shut down.

Administrative logoff means the administrative software program received your user information a second time, and shut off the connection it was keeping open. This happens when your user information is physically sent from a different machine, e.g. another user has logged in to Platts on the Net using your account. This also happens when the Internet connection slows down the communication between your machine and our servers. Please consult your systems administrator for assistance with these issues All permissions cache errors (PERMCACHE) Platts on the Net powered by RealTick exiting because of permissioning problem Cache exited abruptly. Platts on the Net is abruptly shutting down because the Permcache lost its connection to the permissions server. This is a good indication of a connectivity problem. 18 What is the difference between DSL vs. a Cable Modem? DSL vs. CABLE Cable modems are typically faster for downloads than most if not all DSL lines, when the cable infrastructure is new or well maintained. However, cable has a few disadvantages to DSL. The first disadvantage is that cable is an RF network - this means that it is vulnerable to transient problems "within the network" from RF interference. Since cable is a shared media, there is a possibility that performance may degrade over time as additional households plug in, connect additional devices (videos, game machines) to the TV lines. A cable company may react slowly to decreases in performance, as they never sell access by speed, or promise consistent speed or latency. One of the largest disadvantages of cable over DSL is the upstream (return path). Cable companies are using a very narrow band for return signaling, below all the space allocated for TV channels. This band is prone to RF interference and is very limited in capacity. Upstream transmissions may therefore compete with others in the area, get delayed (suffer high latency) due to noise fighting techniques, and cable Terms Of Service typically prohibit any kind of constant upstream use. Internet use is shifting away from central servers broadcasting to many individuals and some interesting peer to peer applications are appearing (games, voice and video applications, communal libraries). These applications need a strong upstream channel. In summary, cable modems are currently good value and strong competition for residential casual use, often available more cheaply and far faster than their ADSL competition. However, DSL is probably the more future-proof system, offering digital direct from the internet infrastructure. If your DSL ISP is on the ball, your performance in either direction will not be different from peak hour to early morning, and DSL lines are available for a wide variety of purposes, both business and residential.
