A Guide to Creating a Behavioral Resume

Why should I follow this format? This guide details all aspects and qualities of a resume that employers find easy to read and relevant to their job search. Recruiters spend on average seconds initially scanning a resume so it is important to differentiate yourself through bullets and demonstration of skills with each experience. What is a resume? A resume is a document that summarizes your relevant job experience, education, and skills for the purpose of obtaining an interview when seeking employment. Why should I write a resume? Contrary to popular belief, your resume DOES NOT get you the job. Your resume is the key tool to use in order to get you the interview. Keep in mind that this is your first chance to make a good impression- a strong resume takes you to the next step, so make sure it s the best it can be. How do I start my resume? You should use Resunate to develop your first resume, working from the CBA sample. Resunate is a resume program that will not only help you construct your resume, but will also allow for you to enter a job description and give you a score on how well your resume matches the job. When will I need my resume? Whether you re applying for an internship, signing up for a networking event, looking for your first full-time position, or sending in an application to study abroadchances are you are going to need a resume. As time consuming as it may be to put together your first resume, it s worth it! Once you get everything down on paper, updating is easy. Developing Your Brand Creating a resume is your opportunity to highlight your experiences for employers. The variety of experiences you become involved with, including activities, volunteer, and work and professional experiences, will develop your brand and determine whether employers view you as a generic or luxury good.

FAQ s About Your Resume What are some key things to keep in mind about the format of the resume? Exactly a page Not from a template Professional there should be no borders, colors, or graphics. For finance and accounting majors specifically, keep the text and format as traditional as possible. The only exception to this is if a student is pursuing a career in graphic design (in that case, check out a Prezi resume or Prezume at However, creative license is more appropriate in a portfolio instead of a resume. Font size should be between 10 and 12, with the name being a bit bolder and larger Margins can be 1 all the way around Bullets add bullets to show the skills that you gained from a certain experience. These should definitely be incorporated for any work experience, and you can also opt to include them with activities or volunteerism (depending on the extent of your involvement). How do I list my official school name on my resume? University of Pittsburgh, College of Business Administration If a transfer student, list previous college under University of Pittsburgh with dates attended, course of study, and number of credits transferred. How do I list my degrees on my resume? Regardless of major within the Business School, your degree is a Bachelor of Science of Business Administration. If you have more than one major within the business school, you may denote this by listing each major. University of Pittsburgh, College of Business Administration Bachelor of Science in Business Administration April 2014 Double Majors: Finance and Marketing GPA 3.4 Double Degree: If you have a major outside of the business school Since you are earning both degrees from the same university, the University of Pittsburgh, have that listed at the top. Then have two different sections that list each school you are enrolled in. University of Pittsburgh April 2011 Overall GPA: 3.8 College of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major: Marketing Certificate Program in Professional Writing Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, Bachelor of Science Major: Psychology Dual Degree: If you are an Arts and Sciences student also taking business classes University of Pittsburgh, College of Arts and Sciences Bachelor of Arts April 2014 Major: Communications and Business GPA 3.2

Minor? Concentration? Certificate? University of Pittsburgh, College of Business Administration Bachelor of Science in Business Administration April 2014 Major: Finance Minor: Economics Certificate: International Business GPA: 3.2 Should I include references on my resume? Employers assume that if they ask for references, the applicant will provide them. Do not include the phrase References available upon request or the actual references in your resume, but do have a separate sheet of paper available that lists any references you are willing to offer. References should be people who can speak to your key skills and career ambitions. They can be employers or faculty. They should never be relatives, even if an employer asks for a personal reference. What if my GPA is below a 3.0? Do not list it! While some employers may not ask you about the absence of a GPA on your resume, most will- so be prepared with an explanation of why you omitted it. Can I list my Major GPA? My Business GPA? If so, should I list multiple? You can definitely list your business or major GPA on your resume, especially if that GPA is higher than your cumulative GPA. When doing so, it is best if you list both. However, if your cumulative GPA is below a 3.0 and your business or major GPA is not, you can elide your cumulative GPA. How should I list my experiences on my resume? All experiences should be listed in reverse chronological order by start date, meaning that your most recent experiences should be at the top of each section. Don t forget to include dates for everything you have accomplished! If your most relevant positions do not land at the top of your section when listing by date, add a separate section called Relevant Experience or Professional Experience to make it stand out more. If I am an accounting major, how should I list the credit hours I will be graduating with on my resume? Include this in the education section on the next line after your major and before your GPA as Graduating with 120/150 credit hours If I transferred from another university, how do I include this on my resume? All experiences on your resume should be listed in reverse chronological order, therefore list University of Pittsburgh first and your previous school should follow. For example: University of Pittsburgh, College of Business Administration Bachelor of Science in Business Administration April 2013 Major: Accounting GPA (Leave off of your resume for your first semester) Graduating with 150 credit hours

Pennsylvania State University, Smeal College of Business Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Fall Spring 2012 Major: Accounting GPA 3.0 Transferred 36 credits As a freshman, how can I make my resume relevant to business? The important thing to remember is that any work experience can help us to develop skills that are relevant to the business world, just make sure you talk about those skills in your bullet points. For instance, a common high school job may be waiting tables or having retail experience. Instead of writing about what you did, talk about what kind of impact it had on you as a business student or what kind of value you added to the company. Think about key skills that you developed through that position (teamwork, communication, training, leadership, customer service ) and build your bullets around those buzz words. As for activities and volunteerism, we encourage you to include things you were involved in at your high school, specifically those that demonstrate business, leadership or academic merit. Be sure to elaborate on your role within each organization. You may feel your resume looks a little bare, especially knowing that all of your high school activities need to come off after freshman year. However, that is just extra incentive to get involved at Pitt as soon as possible! Check out the CBA website for a list of all business student organizations, or for a comprehensive list of all university organizations. As someone with little to no internship experience, how can I best market my skills? Even if you have not had a professional internship or work experience relevant to business or your major, there are still plenty of outlets from which you can acquire relevant skills. Relevant Coursework-This section will show employers that you are gaining knowledge of certain subjects in the classroom setting. Remember to put mainly your business courses and list the most relevant ones first! Key Competencies and Skills-A skills section summarizes for the employer exactly what you feel your strengths are. These competencies could have developed through high school jobs, activity involvement or even the classroom setting. Special Projects-If you have had MCE, Business Communications or another course where you put a lot of effort, time and knowledge into a project, put it on your resume! Teamwork, communication, organization and research are all incredibly important skills to have in the business world. Will I need any other items in addition to the resume? In many cases, your resume may not be the only document required. You may want to have a cover letter, reference page, or even portfolio ready for an interview situation. Do your research to find out whether or not these other documents are recommended or required. What if I need more help with my resume? 6 Overview of Sections on the Resume Contact Information This section of the resume provides those looking at it with your personal contact information. Name, current mailing address, address, and phone number should be included in this section. Please note that all contact information should be current with respect to the application process (i.e. DO NOT keep your dorm address on your resume while you are applying for jobs in your hometown, this can be changed if applying to an employer who is national or you can leave both). By keeping information current, it eliminates confusion on the employer s part. Consider using a non-pitt address, especially if you are a senior. Keep it professional. Education In the education section, information about your university, specific college within the university, major, GPA, the degree you will receive, and graduation date should be provided. You may list either your overall or major GPA so long as it is above a 3.0. If you have transferred from another academic institution, be sure to include this information in the Education section. Key Competencies and Skills The key competencies and skills section of the resume should provide those looking at it with a quick snapshot of your experiences. The skills section shows employers what you bring to the table, what you have learned, and how you can use your experience to enhance their company. The skills section should reflect all of the other experiences you have described on your resume. The location of the skills section will vary depending on your desire to highlight your skills over work experience or vice versa. Relevant Coursework The Relevant Coursework section of the resume provides anyone looking at it the opportunity to see how you have developed your skills in an academic setting. These listed courses should support the position you are applying for (i.e. Advertising & Sales Promotion should be listed if you were applying for a position with an advertising firm). Approach this section with caution- you do not need to list every class you have ever taken! Work Experience Your Work Experience section should include information on each organization you ve worked for, the specific tasks you were responsible for, as well as the value you added to the company. When possible, try to quantify the work you have done. Remember- all descriptions should begin with strong action verbs. Activities/Community Service/Volunteerism In addition to academic and work experience, employers are also very interested in how involved you are on campus. This section is your chance to exhibit your well-roundedness. Be sure to include organization descriptions, activities in which you have participated in, and any leadership roles you have taken in these organizations. Note to freshman-you may keep your high school activities in this section but be sure to take them off after your first year. It is important to get involved! Experience-Special Projects, Academic Projects, Relevant Experience, Other Besides work experience and activity involvement, CBA provides a lot of opportunities for students in the classroom setting. By including this section, you can elaborate on you work with your peers to accomplish a group project related to the business setting. For instance, Managing in Complex Environments, Projects in Marketing, or CPLE courses could add great value to your resume.

International Experience/Study Abroad International Experience is a great way to differentiate yourself from other students. Although it can be placed anywhere on your resume, it is most effective to put it directly under your education section at the top. Make sure when you are formulating your bullet points, you think about what skills you learned while being abroad, aside from the normal Completed coursework in xyz or Enhanced language and culture skills in another country. For instance, did you have a difficult time adjusting to roommates or the learning environment in your classes? You can say something like Demonstrated adaptability to unique learning styles while interacting with people of various cultures. If you completed an internship while abroad, be sure to capture that experience in your bullets. Examples of strong bullet points include: Gained an understanding of how to handle cultural differences in the workplace, Effectively adapted to situations of change, or Undertook tasks that were unfamiliar.

Developing Strong Bullet Points **Think about skills used or value added-not simply the job description** Use Action Verbs Any strong bullet point begins with a strong action verb. Additionally, it is important to vary your verbs throughout your resume. If you feel as though you are recycling the same verbs throughout your resume, reference the action verbs list in this packet for other idea. Try to use a different action verb for every bullet under a given work or extracurricular experience. Finally, choose professional, appropriate verbs that you would use in a conversation. For a list of action verbs that relate to a specific job type, see the next page. Quantify It is crucial that you try to quantify your bullets as best as you can. This allows the recruiters to determine the degree of the work you accomplished. For example, instead of saying trained new employees on restaurant closeout procedures try quantifying by saying, trained 7 new employees on restaurant closeout procedures. By simply quantifying your bullet points, employers can get a better idea of the impact you had on that organization. Be Relative Sometimes it is difficult to determine the degree of your impact when your work and extracurricular experiences are from smaller organizations. For example, say you worked as an intern in a Pittsburgh advertising agency. You may have a bullet point similar to, Developed a series of 5 advertisements that increased sales for the client by $5,000 from Quarter 3 to Quarter 4. When looking at your resume, a recruiter who works for a large corporation may not see a $5,000 increase as a great impact. Therefore, it may be more impactful to write, Developed a series of 5 advertisements that increased sales for the client by 5% from Quarter 3 to Quarter 4. Stand Out Often times, bullet points tend to state the obvious. For example, if someone was a server, he or she may have a bullet point stating, Served 100 customers per shift. While it is great to quantify, recruiters know that servers serve customers. Bullets are much more effective when they are focused on any special projects or tasks that truly set the person apart from the other employees. Did you ever train anyone? Were you recognized for outstanding service? Were you assigned to a special project? Did you assist in increasing sales? For example, something similar to Promoted to lead trainer after training 6 new servers on the Point of Sale system and company customer service standards is a more effective bullet than Served 100 customers per shift.

Customizing to the Job Description Each resume you send out should be customized to the exact job. Although it is very convenient to make mass copies, to be most effective it should highlight what the employer is looking for. On the following pages you will find a job description and a resume by a junior Accounting student tailored to that job description. Schedule an appointment with a member of the Career Services staff to tailor your resume.
