Prerequisite Courses: MBA 701 and MBA 702; Co-requisite Course: MBA 703 Course Detailed Description Information technology (IT) has become entrenched in many aspects of how we define business, execute strategy and manage the organization. IT is viewed as one of the critical success factors for

2 organizations to achieve competitive advantage. This class will focus on issues that are strategic to business and IT leaders. Topics such as the role of IT, business-it alignment, business intelligence, IT innovations, IT enabled process organization, IT portfolio management and IT outsourcing will be addressed. The course is designed to develop understanding of: (1) basic business processes, and (2) the role of information systems. In so doing, the functional areas of business (finance, marketing, information systems and operations management) can be integrated into management strategies. The goal of this course is to familiarize students with the potential opportunities and transformational nature of IT and to equip students with a balanced and informed view and approach to managing IT in organizations. This course is a combination of lectures and a high degree of case analysis and discussion. Students will be expected to analyze the critical issues in a series of management cases and be prepared to discuss their analyses and recommendations in class. The course will provide a broad overview of the key managerial issues surrounding the use and development of IT in today s organization Developing Business Strategy to Compete in the Information Economy. Innovative usage of information technology has allowed certain industry players to enter, create, or restructure entire industries. Successfully competing in the information economy requires an understanding of how IT relates to the overall business strategy of the firm. This module examines whether or not IT can be used for strategic gain, the evolution companies must take toward becoming e-businesses, new business models that can be developed using IT, the importance of alignment of the IS strategy and the overall business strategy, and how IT governance approaches bring more accountability to the IT-related decision making. Managing IT Operations. Competing in the information economy requires that organizations are able to measure and control the costs associated with providing these services. This module examines how managers can evaluate emerging technologies and assess how they fit with the firm s strategy, the importance of business intelligence in serving customers in an effective way. Procuring and Implementing Systems in Organizations Until recently, managing the IT organization involved management of the software development life cycle as systems were internally developed by the IS group. Today, the IT organization relies more and more on external partners and outsourcing for specific IT solutions. This involves the selection of vendors and outsourcing partners, managing these contracts and relationships, and successfully implementing new systems and applications into the existing organization. Overall Course Objectives: At the end of the course, students should be able to: Explain the concept of the business process and business process performance Define the role of technology/information systems in effective business processes 2
