1 Case Study No.31: Appendix 1 Who Wants to be a Millionaire? - Personal finance edition FOR A CLASS OF 24 TO 30 PUPILS IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE HOUR, IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT 15 MINUTES IS SPENT ON USING COLOSSAL CARDS TO INTRODUCE SOME DIFFERENT FORMS OF PAYMENT; CREDIT CARDS, CASH CARDS, CHEQUE ETC. TELL THE PUPILS THESE WILL BE IN THE QUIZ. Procedure The rules are broadly the same as the ITV version of Millionaire with some modifications. 1. Divide the class into groups of five/six students. Ask each group to draw lots for which of them becomes the contestant. Each group should provide one contestant. 2. Put five or six chairs at the front of the class and ask the contestants to sit in the chairs. 3. Read out a STARTER question or put them on an OHT: Give each student a piece of paper and a pen. Tell them that they must put the items in order from top to bottom on their paper by writing in the letters in order (eg. 1. B, 2. C, 3. A, 4. D). As soon as they have written the answers ask them to put the paper in the air above their heads. Watch carefully to spot the order. Then read out the answers. Ask students with correct answers to stand up. Ask the student with the correct answer who was first to display his answer sheet to come out and play Millionaire. 4. Proceed by asking the contestant the questions. The questions are grouped into easy (up to 8000), medium (up to 32000) and hard (up to 1million). Allow time for a response but not unlimited time as in the real game (one minute should be enough). Play the Chris Tarrant role as much as you like. EASY MEDIUM , ,000 HARD 9. 64, , , , ,000,000 page 1 of 62

2 If the students, can t give the answers in the minute, there are three lifelines: Phone a friend - the student chooses one friend from their group. Give this friend 20 seconds to respond. 50/50 - take away two wrong answers and give them a choice of two options Ask the audience. Ask students to raise their hands in response to each answer and write the numbers on the board (20 say A, 10 say B etc.). They can only use each lifeline once. 5. Proceed with asking questions until they get a wrong answer. You can offer them a cheque made out to them. You can give them the cheque to go away with or a suitable prize for those reaching the million. 6. When the contestant has failed, he or she goes back to their group. Ask another starter question for the remaining contestants. Do this one more time and then ask the groups to choose another 6 new contestants. This is designed to keep the process rolling over and get more pupils involved. 7. If the quiz runs short of questions you can use the Activity below HOW WOULD YOU SPEND A MILLION POUNDS? Ask the pupils in pairs to discuss and note down what they would do with a million pounds - what sorts of things they would buy or how they would use the money otherwise. This should gain some interesting responses - some amusing. But would also reveal some information of what they think a million pounds is worth. Then ask them if they did the following: did they spend it all on themselves - houses, cars, yachts etc.? did they buy things for their family? did they give any money to charity - Should they? did they do anything for the local community? Should they? The other idea here is to pick up some other aspects of personal finance: did they save any money to provide income in the future? You could explain that they could earn interest in building societies, banks etc. so that money would grow. what would they have to do to protect all their new purchases? What risks would they now face? You could introduce the idea of insurance for house, goods, health etc. Debate some general issues: is it always good having a lot of money. Do houses and goods bring happiness? is it right that some people earn huge salaries - like football players and bosses of big companies - while other people get very little? page 2 of 62
