LEWIS VAUGHN SCHOLARSHIP If you a Hamilton County, Florida resident enrolled in an approved program and attending classes on the Valdosta Campus of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, you may qualify for a scholarship! About E. Lewis Vaughn E. Lewis Vaughn, the son of Joseph Slick and Bessie Mae Vaughn, has been a continuous resident of Jasper, Florida since birth. He is a graduate of J.R.E. Lee High School and received a Pittsburg certification in Welding (currently American Welding Society) from Valdosta Technical College (currently Wiregrass Georgia Technical College). Early in life, Lewis began to develop a special interest in his father s profession, blacksmith and welding. As he grew older, his childhood curiosity grew into a career goal. His Father, an exceptionally gifted craftsman, became his teacher, mentor and employer with increasing responsibilities and job assignments. After graduation from high school, Lewis became a full time employee of Slick s Welding Shop. Upon his father s retirement in 1974, Lewis received a gift for a lifetime. Slick s Welding Shop was transferred to him. With the transfer came a new owner and a new business name, Vaughn s Welding and Muffler Shop. It was also the beginning of a third generation of Vaughn s entrepreneurship presence in Jasper which began in In addition to being a businessman, Lewis retired in 2012 from the honorable position of a Hamilton County commissioner after serving for twenty-seven years. His commitment to the citizens of Hamilton is evident by a review of his work as a county commissioner and as a skilled craftsman in the technical and occupational services he provides. The E. Lewis Vaughn Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to selected residents of Hamilton County desiring to pursue a career in the selected occupational and technical programs. The recipients of this assistance must be committed to contributing to the enhancement of the quality of life for the residents of Hamilton County. This financial assistance program is an investment for the future of Hamilton County.

2 Application Criteria and Process The student must be a resident of Hamilton County in Florida for not less than four years and must be enrolled at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, Valdosta campus. All majors on the approved list to promote the development of Hamilton County will be considered. The student must do the following: o Complete the attached application. o Obtain 2 letters of recommendation o Write an essay of approximately 500 words about why you believe you should be the recipient of the E. Lewis Vaughn Scholarship, what you plan to study and how you plan to use your training in Hamilton County. Selection of student will be made by Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Foundation selection committee and the E. Lewis Vaughn Scholarship Committee. Submit your application package to Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Foundation South, 4089 Val Tech Road, Valdosta, GA Completed application packages must be received by the date posted at Scholarship Criteria and Eligible Expenses Scholarship recipient must be in an approved program and maintain a GPA of 2.0. The amount of the scholarship will be determined by the amount of other financial assistance the student will be receiving. The total number of payments will be based on the number of credits required for the selected program. The total amount of a scholarship could range from $250 per term, for two terms, to $500 per term for two terms, depending upon other aid received and the total number of required courses for the selected major. Scholarship funds can be used for tuition, books, supplies, equipment, or similar items the student needs to succeed in college. Receipts will be needed. If the student withdraws from WGTC for any reason, the remaining part of the scholarship is void, and the remaining funds will be given to the next qualified applicant. Foundation staff will expect that the student will write a progress note to the donor. Questions regarding the E.
