On power up, allow for an initialization period (40 sec., approximately), before the IER 610 is operational. During this phase, the revolving display unit blinks red and green alternately. The display shows the percentage of the initialization process carried out. Figure 3.1 Power Up Page 18

3.2 BARCODE SCANNING RECOMMENDATIONS IMPORTANT: When scanning barcodes, it is important to keep the following recommendations in mind: Present one single document at a time. Place the barcode face down on and in the center of the scanner window. Place the document horizontally on the scanner window without moving it. If thin paper documents, printed on both sides, need to be scanned, strong ambient light might enhance paper translucency and interfere with correct barcode scanning. Therefore, IER recommends the use of document media not printed on the back side or at least with a blank zone on the back of the barcode area. Page 19

3.3 BARCODE SCANNING Preliminary Steps: - Power up the reader Procedure Depending on your position in relation to the reader, rotate the revolving display unit to be able to read the messages. The barcode on the document can be presented in any direction on the scanner window, however, for correct reader operation, always comply with the IER recommendations (see page 19). The barcode is scanned by the imager. A short sound signal informs the user that the data has been read and transmitted to the host system for validation. The immediate response from the host system causes the display unit to light up either in: Green: barcode accepted A short sound signal is activated. Red: barcode rejected A long, high-pitched sound signal is activated. A message with the processing report is displayed. Note: Page 20 The wording of the messages displayed depends on the application. Therefore they are not listed in the present document.

Figure 3.2 Barcode Scanning Page 21

3.4 PROCESSING MAGNETIC STRIPE DOCUMENTS Preliminary Steps: - Power up the reader Procedure Note: Lighting up of the display unit and the wording of the messages displayed depend on the reader application and are therefore not described in the present document. For example, it is possible to configure the reader to behave as in the context of barcode scanning, see page 20. IMPORTANT: The magnetic stripe documents are inserted into the insertion slot at the front of the reader. The magnetic stripe must face down, but can be on the right or the left. The reader checks the document parameters listed below. If they do not comply, the document is rejected through the insertion slot: Length Height Magnetic stripe missing or erroneous. If the document is accepted, one of the two magnetic heads reads the magnetic stripe and checks the information read. Depending on the result of magnetic stripe reading, the following will occur: Document is read a second time Document is rejected Document exits the reader through the output slot at the rear (normal procedure). IMPORTANT: Note: Page 22 Before being able to insert a new document, the operator must remove the processed document from the output slot at the rear of the reader. If, after reading the document, the reader does not receive any host response, or if the host response is delayed, the document is rejected through the insertion slot. It is possible to eject a document with the pushbutton located at the rear of the reader (see page 10).

5 MAINTENANCE 5.1 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE Barcode Scanner Module To ensure optimum bar code reading, it is important to keep the scanner window clean. The decision on the periodicity of window cleaning is up to the personnel in charge of the reader. IMPORTANT: To clean the mineral glass of the scanner window, exclusively use a soft, non-abrasive cloth containing cotton. Only use window cleaning products. Be careful not to splash or spray any water or cleaning product directly on the scanner window. Always dampen the cloth with window cleaner BEFORE rubbing the glass Magnetic Stripe Reader Mechanisms IER recommends thorough periodic reader maintenance consisting of the following operations: dust removal and cleaning of the mechanical assemblies. The periodic maintenance schedule must be adapted to the particular reader environment and operating conditions (presence of dust, quality of the media used, quantity of documents read, etc.). For optimum reader performance, IER recommends the following periodic maintenance schedule, if the reader is operated under normal conditions: every four months or after processing of 30,000 documents, whichever occurs first. To carry out these operations, it is essential to use the IER Cleaning Kit, P/N S32132A and to follow the procedures described in the Reader Maintenance Manual, IER P/N N0B972A. IER will not be responsible for any problem consequent to the customer's failure to adhere to the recommendations regarding the maintenance schedule, CAUTION the maintenance products and the specific instructions to follow.
